2 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2012-present Black Family Reunion Study University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Health Behavior The Black Reunion Study is a two-phase study designed to promote healthy behaviors at Black North Carolina family reunions, in an effort to reduce chronic disease disparities. Developed interview questionnaires to assess participants personal and family health concerns, family health communication, and interest in addressing health at future family reunions. Recruited and enrolled African American families for study participation. Interviewed family reunion organizers and attendees. Conducted observations at African American family reunions. Co-authoring a manuscript on the potential for addressing health disparities at the black family reunion Fitness in the Shop (FITShop) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Health Behavior FITShop is a two-arm randomized controlled intervention study designed to test the effectiveness of promoting physical activity among African American men who frequent Black barbershops. Conducted quantitative and qualitative analysis for peer-reviewed publications. Lead author on a mixed-methods manuscript summarizing results of formative research used to design the FITShop intervention. Assisted with training research staff to conduct post-intervention observations in participating barbershops, to assess health-related conversations. Conducted post-intervention interviews with FITShop participants to evaluate strengths and challenges of study participation, and insight for planning future barbershop-based health interventions. Sep-Dec 2012 Jobs and Health Study University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Health Behavior The Jobs and Health Study is designed to understand the health needs and concerns of un/underemployed adults in Cumberland County, NC and to promote healthy behaviors in these populations. Principal investigator on a pilot study to promote health among un/underemployed adults through the delivery of a telephone-based motivational interviewing (MI) intervention. Assisted with the development, training, and implementation for a telephone-based health promotion intervention for un/underemployed adults. Leading a manuscript describing the development and implementation of a telephone-based MI study for un/undemployed adults. Hood, S. Page 2 of 9
3 May-Oct 2011 Nicotine Vaccine Study University of Louisville James Graham Brown Cancer Center Behavioral Oncology Laboratory The Nicotine Vaccine Study seeks to understand factors which influence smoking cessation decision making among urban adult smokers, as it relates to their willingness to receive a vaccine (currently in clinical trials) to aid in smoking cessation. Coordinated study recruitment by advertising via flyers and web-based announcements at the University and recruiting in health clinics. Assessed participant carbon monoxide levels using a Smokerlyzer device. Administered in-person surveys to assess participants attitudes toward and willingness to receive a vaccine to aid in smoking cessation. Jun 09-Jan 10 Understanding Type-2 Diabetes Self-management in African American Adults University of Louisville School of Nursing The qualitative study consisted of seven focus groups that were conducted to identify facilitators and barriers to diabetes self-management among African American adults. Coded and analyzed focus group data using Atlas ti 6.0 qualitative data analysis software. Co-authored two related manuscripts. May 2008 Community Health Screening Follow-up Study University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences Focus groups were conducted to identify barriers influencing community members attendance and participation at a large community health fair. Organized focus groups with community stakeholders. Recorded notes and observation during focus groups. Assisted with summarizing results and preparing a report for the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness. Jan 06 -May 08 Elimika Colorectal Cancer Prevention Study Saint Louis University Health Communication Research Laboratory The Elimika study, an R01 study sponsored by the NCI, seeks to understand how sociocultural factors influence colorectal cancer (CRC) knowledge, attitudes and screening decision making among African Americans. Recruited African American adults for study participation. Administered written surveys. Conducted quantitative and qualitative analysis for peer-reviewed publications.
