1 Small/Equipment/Travel Grants February - April 2012 Included are the funding opportunities for February -April further details can be found at the weblinks supplied or via contacting Cather ine Moor e (c.a.moor e.2@bham.ac.uk) Academy of Medical Scicences Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers Deadline 12 March 2012 This scheme provides modest starter funds to enable research-active clinical lecturers to pursue their research work, gather preliminary data and thereby strengthen their applications for longer-term fellowships and funding. Grants may be held over two years and are worth up to 30,000. Alzheimer's Research UK Emergency Support Grants 17 February 2012 The scheme provides maximum funds of 30,000 for up to one year and is designed to cover unanticipated funding shortages for the completion of key experiments or the retention of key staff. Alzheimer's Research UK Equipment Grants 20 April 2012 These provide between 10,000 and 100,000 for scientific equipment, flexibly defined. Joint funding applications for even larger pieces are accepted. Alzheimer's Research UK Pilot Project Grants 17 April 2012 These provide up to 30,000 for small innovative research projects and pilot studies. For projects involving inherently expensive techniques it may be possible to apply for up to 50,000. The maximum grant duration is 24 months. Alzheimer's Research UK Sabbaticals and Secondments 20 April 2012 The scheme enables established researchers to enrich their research programmes and develop collaborations. Awards are worth a maximum of 50,000 for a period of up to one year. Arthritis Research UK Studentships for Medical Students 03 February 2012 These enable medical students with the appropriate academic skills to take part in supervised biomedical or clinical research in musculoskeletal disease in a UK-based academic centre. Five studentships, typically lasting eight weeks and undertaken in the July to September holiday, are available, providing a stipend of 200 per week. 2 Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland Anaesthesia History Prize 23 April 2012 The prize will be awarded for an original essay of 4,000 to 6,000 words on a topic related to the history of either anaesthesia, intensive care, or pain management. The entrant must be an AAGBI member in a training grade. The prize is worth 1,000. Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland Travel Grants These are offered to members who are seeking funding to work, or to deliver educational training courses or conferences, in low- and middle-income countries. Association of Clinical Pathologists Incentive Prizes 31 March 2012 The awards are intended for eligible junior doctors (that is prior to beginning specialty training including F1 and F2 years) who submit work demonstrating the importance of pathology in the practice of medicine. A maximum of five prizes, of up to 100 each, will be awarded annually for the best submissions. Association of Clinical Pathologists Research Award for Pathologists in Training 31 March 2012 This award aims to promote research undertaken by members who are at an early stage of their careers. An annual prize of 1,000 is given for the best paper in any pathological discipline presented by a trainee member. Ataxia UK Ataxia Awards These support innovative and relevant research that fits into an explicit therapeutic strategy. Breast Cancer Campaign Pilot Grants 08 March March 2012 These allow established scientists to investigate and develop new ideas in the field of breast cancer research. Grants are awarded for one year and are worth up to 20,000. British Academy Conference Programme 24 February 2012 onferences should be pivotal events and of lasting significance in their field, providing an opportunity for leading and emerging scholars to examine current and future issues surrounding novel, dynamic, innovative and exciting subject areas in the humanities and social sciences. The academy will provide the venue, facilities and catering, contribute to travel and accommodation for organisers, speakers and chairs and promote and administer the conference. British Academy UK-Taiwan One-Year Partnerships 08 February 2012 The aim of this scheme is to support the development of partnerships between the UK and Taiwan, strengthening research excellence through new, innovative initiatives and links. Funding is worth up to 10,000 for one year, with the British Academy and the National Science Council of Taiwan each contributing up to 5, Page 2 of 8

3 British Association of Cancer Research Exchange Fellowships These enable members to visit other institutions in the UK or abroad for the purpose of lecture tours, courses or to carry out collaborative work. Up to 2,000 is available to cover travel and living expenses. British Association of Cancer Research Meeting Bursaries These enable non-student members to attend scientific meetings relevant to cancer research. Up to 800 is available to cover second class overland fares, APEX airfare, registration fees and accommodation. British Association of Cancer Research Mid-Career Fellowships These provide funds to support travel to a laboratory and reasonable subsistence costs to enable the applicant to advance an ongoing programme or facilitate a collaboration which may lead to new programmes of work. Up to 3,000 is available. British Association of Cancer Research Student Awards These enable students to attend scientific meetings in cancer research. Up to 800 is available to cover second class overland fares or APEX airfare, registration fees and accommodation. Doris Hillier - Research Grant To assist research into rheumatism and arthritis. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA. Gunton and Gilchrist - Research Grant To assist research into public health relating to cancer. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners or research scientists in the UK. H C Roscoe - Research Grant To promote research into the elimination of the common cold and/or other viral diseases of the human respiratory system. Applicants must be members of the BMA or research scientists working with a member of the BMA. Helen H Lawson - Research Grant To assist research into novel approaches to rehabilitation in stroke care. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA. 4 Joan Dawkins - Research Grant telemedicine. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners or research scientists. Projects must relate to the UK only. Josephine Lansdell - Research Grant To assist research in the field of heart diseases. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA. Strutt and Harper - Research Grant To assist research into improving the uptake of preventative measures. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA. The James Trust - Research Grant To assist research into asthma. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA. Vera Down - Research Grant To assist research into neurological disorders. Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA. British Society for Developmental Biology Travel Grants These enable student and postdoctoral members to attend BSDB-sponsored meetings. 13 February British Society for Haematology Annual Scientific Meeting Scholarships for Haematology Professionals 01 March 2012 These support attendance at the society s annual scientific meeting. Scholarships are worth up to 500 each to support registration, travel and accommodation. British Society for Human Genetics General Travel Awards 01 April 2012 Priority for these awards will be given to young investigators presenting results at major meetings. To qualify for a travel award applicants must have been a member of the Society for at least one year. British Society for the study of Prosthetic Dentistry Schottlander Oral Presentation Prize 01 February 2012 The prize will be awarded for a 20-minute clinical case report, outlining the treatment of a complex clinical case. The prize consists of an award worth 750 and a certificate. Page 4 of 8

5 British Society for the study of Prosthetic Dentistry Schottlander Poster Prize The prize is awarded for the best poster or table presentation at the annual conference. The prize is worth 150. British Society of Immunology Communicating Immunology Grants 01 March April 2012 These enable members to host events aimed at communicating immunology to the general public or schools. Up to 500 is available. British Society of Immunology Travel Awards 01 February 2012 These support travel to attend scientific meetings or visits to laboratories for specific short-term activities, such as collaborative research or to learn new techniques. Maximum awards are 500 for travel within the UK, 700 for European travel and 1,000 for intercontinental travel. British Society of Rheology Travel Grants 31 March 2012 The aim of these grants is to enable students to present their research at a conference that contains a strong rheological element. College of Medical and Dental Sciences Research Development Fund 06 February 2012 Funding of up to 5000 is available for posdoctoral fellows, junior clinical researchers and faculty members to support the generation of important pilot research data. Elimination of Leukaemia Fund Travel and Training Fellowships For general information and copies of the application forms, please contact Lesley Bodenham (L.H.Bodenham@bham.ac.uk) ) in the first instance This scheme enables clinicians, nurses, clinical scientists and related health professionals working in the UK to advance their knowledge and expertise in the treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplasia. Epilepsy Action Innovation Grants 17 March 2012 The aim is to support researchers to develop research ideas, make new inter-disciplinary research partnerships, stimulate future research grant applications and produce quality published outputs. A total of 11,000 is available for these grants. Individual applications should be in the region of 1,000 to 1,500, with a maximum of 2,000 for more ambitious proposals. Epilepsy Action Travel Bursaries 17 March 2012 These encourage UK postgraduate students, nurses, healthcare staff and young researchers undertaking non-laboratory epilepsy research to present their work at UK and international conferences. The budget is 1,500 and bursaries are worth up to 250 each to help with travel or accommodation expenses. Page 5 of 8

6 European Association for Cancer Research Travel Fellowships 31 March 2012 These provide opportunities for researchers to work in new contexts across Europe, support the development of research in a centre of excellence and participate in workshops and courses. Grants are worth up to 2,500 each. Where a longer fellowship is desirable, EACR will provide 50 per cent matching funding worth up to 4,000. European Association of Cancer Research Meeting Bursaries 23 February 2012 This scheme is designed to assist members of the association to attend the EACR22 meeting in Barcelona in July Bursaries are worth between 600 and 1,200. European Science Foundation COST Open Call 30 March 2012 Funding supports networking activities, such as meetings, conferences, workshops, short-term scientific exchanges, training schools, publications and dissemination activities. European Sciene Foundation ESF-EMBO Symposium on Antiviral RNAi: From Molecular Biology Towards Applications 26 February 2012 The symposium, to be held from 11 to 16 June 2012 in Pultusk, Poland, offers foremost European research groups a forum to interchange results and ideas among themselves and with leading groups from abroad. Grants are available for students and early stage researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the travel costs. Guarantors of Brain Visiting Lecturer Bursary Scheme 28 February 2012 This scheme allows international or British scientists of repute to visit clinical departments of laboratories in the UK to share information, techniques and experiences. Each bursary is worth up to 5,000 and includes economy class return airfare, the cost of lodging for six nights and an honorarium of 1,000. Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund Research Support Awards The following grants are available: capital funding; equipment grants; travel grants; clinical care. Lady Tata Memorial Trust International Awards for Research in Leukaemia 28 February March 2012 These support research on leukaemia, restricted to studies of the leukaemogenic agents, the epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology and genetic basis of leukaemia. Awards are usually between 25,000 and 35,000 per annum. Multiple Sclerosis International Federation Du Pré Grants 12 February 2012 These enable young researchers to undertake short visits to other MS research centres either to learn more from each other or to carry out parts of joint research projects. Grants usually range between 1,000 and 2,000. The maximum sum available is 5, Page 6 of 8

7 Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain and Ireland Innovative Awards 10 February 2012 These provide support for short-term, small-scale projects to allow researchers to explore new ideas in MS research that might merit further support. Pain Relief Foundation Research Grants 24 February 2012 The grants may fund projects, salaries etc. Grants previously awarded have varied starting from 10,000 each rising to 30,000 each. Royal College of Ophthalmologists Fight for Sight Award 30 March 2012 Applications are invited from young ophthalmologists and scientists working in the field of ophthalmology throughout the UK for the fight for sight. The prize is worth 5,000. Royal College of Ophthalmologists Keeler Scholarship 24 February 2012 The aim is to enable the Keeler scholar for the subsequent benefit of ophthalmology in the UK to study, research or acquire special skills, knowledge or experience at a suitable location in the UK or elsewhere for a minimum period of six months. The award is worth up to 30,000. Royal College of Surgeons of England Ethicon Foundation Grants 30 March 2012 The fund promotes international goodwill in surgery by providing financial assistance to fellows who are travelling abroad for research or training purposes. The fund will make a contribution of up to 1,000 towards travel expenses. Royal College of Surgeons of England Ronald Raven Barbers Award 07 February 2012 This is aimed at assisting trainee surgeons who are proposing to learn a new surgical technique or procedure of which they can make use to the benefit of their patients on return to the UK. It is likely that two grants in the region of 1,500 each will be made in alternate academic years. Society of Endocrinology Conference Grants 14 April 2012 These enable members to attend endocrine meetings. Awards of up to 500, or up to 750 for overseas meetings, are available to contribute to travel and accommodation costs. Wellcome Trust Biomedical Vacation Scholarships 17 February 2012 These aim to encourage promising undergraduates at the mid-point of their degrees to explore a career in research. Students will receive stipends of 180 ( 190 in London) per week for up to eight weeks. Page 7 of 8
