6 IT Makes HEALTHCARE FUTURE-PROOF HealthFore screens tribal counities for sickle cell aneia The State Governent of Gujarat partnered with HealthFore for disease surveillance. We screened the tribal population of two districts for sickle cell aneia. HealthFore used web-enabled technology to reduce the project cost by 80% and coplete the project in half the estiated tie. Our tea issued color-coded identification cards with a unique nuber to each person screened for the disease.

7 HEALTHFORE 4 A health disorder for generations Tribal counities in Gujarat have a high incidence of sickle cell aneia, a genetic blood disorder. According to a survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 20% of children born with sickle heoglobin (HbS) die before the age of two. Alost 30% of children with the disease die before adulthood. Adults suffering fro the disease need edical attention. Early diagnosis and disease anageent can save lives. However, India does not have a concerted healthcare progra to address sickle cell disorder. Reaching out The World Health Organization (WHO) recoends guidelines to anage sickle cell aneia. The Departent of Health and Faily Welfare of the Gujarat State Governent initiated a sickle cell aneia control progra based on WHO guidelines, the first of its kind in India. A Sickle Cell Aneia Control Society was instituted by the health inistry of the state governent to ipleent the progra. The State Governent of Gujarat involved Non-Governent Organizations (NGOs) to achieve progra goals: Ensure disease-free childbirth by 2020 Prevent deaths due to the disease Iprove the quality of life of sickle cell aneia patients The sickle cell screening outreach progra was launched across five districts of Gujarat in However, out of the 89+ lakh tribals, less than 14 lakh residents were screened until March The challenges included: Dispersed tribal population Non-reliability of existing patient data Non-availability of skilled laboratory resources Lack of infrastructure for High Perforance Liquid Chroatography (HPLC) testing Lack of awareness about the disease Resistance to undergo edical tests

8 ADDRESSING THE LEGACY The Coissionerate of Health, Medical Services & Medical Education, Governent of Gujarat, partnered with HealthFore to screen the tribal population of two districts - Narada and Tapi. We prepared a icro-plan in which each district was divided into tallukas and each talluka A professional tea was deployed to execute the screening progra. Our tea included one lab technician, two paraedics and one data entry operator in each talluka. We recruited tea ebers and trained the for field activities, clinical processes and quality control ethods. into Priary Health Centres (PHCs). A pre-launch eeting was held at the talluka level to bring together stakeholders, including governent officials such as the Chief District Health Officer (CDHO), District Epideiology Medical Officer (EMO), Block Health Officer (BHO), and PHC- Medical Officer.

9 HEALTHFORE 6 HealthFore sought the cooperation of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) volunteers for the progra. Our project coordinator infored ASHA workers of visits 48 hours in advance. An awareness drive about the disease and benefits of screening was undertaken. ASHA teas obilized the tribal population in each village for testing. We conducted blood tests and issued lainated cards to persons who tested negative. An additional blood saple was collected fro patients who tested positive. A teperaturecontrolled transport chain was aintained to send saples for HPLC testing at laboratories. The saples were tested to assess the disease and identify characteristic traits of the disease. Lainated yellow cards were issued to disease carriers, while lainated yellow-white cards were issued to patients with disease traits.

10 Incorporating IT INTO THE SOLUTION HealthFore leveraged IT for executing the project. We used a web-based application to store data collected fro the field and generate a unique identity nuber for each screening. Three layers of data validation ensured accuracy of patient records. Our coprehensive database enabled tiely reporting to the governent.
