2 Message from the Dean Message from the Dean The Faculty of Theology embraces the challenge of the juncture in time and, with the University, enters into a process of formulating a new strategic vision and mission for the period 2012 to Staff and students of the Faculty face this exciting challenge with enthusiasm. The University of Pretoria and the Faculty of Theology emphasise both academic excellence and the equality of all people. This Faculty has a unique structure in that we work primarily with partners. The Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa (NRCA) was the first partner (since 1917) while the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) has the largest number of students. Since the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA) and the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCA) have joined the Faculty, it has become more diverse. We believe that each one of the denominational partners adds value to, and contributes to the relevance of our programmes. A significant number (48,6%) of unattached students are also enrolled in our programmes. These are students who are not formally affiliated with the partner churches, but who take an interest in one or more of the programmes offered by the Faculty. Approximately 40% of first-year students who register for theology at Tuks are women - another indication that the diversity in our Faculty is increasing. There has been a healthy growth in student numbers over the past five years. At the University of Pretoria, research outputs are measured per capita, and the Faculty of Theology scores the highest. New research themes are identified every year and we support and encourage all research initiatives. Research in the fields of ethics, environmental and gender issues as well as theological/religious themes with social implications such as xenophobia, discrimination, and violence in society is of extreme importance. Unique themes that are of national relevance, yet have the potential to make an international impact are addressed in this Faculty. Some of the research is of an interdisciplinary nature and include international participation. The University of Pretoria has agreements with various international universities from which both students and lecturers benefit. The Faculty of Theology is keen to welcome all prospective students who wish to become ministers or other religious workers. And the question to you is: Do you not deserve the very best? Desiree Spolander Studying Theology at Tuks has challenged my belief systems and has transformed the way I view the world. At Tuks the focus is on quality education for success and excellence in future careers and life as a whole. The diverse modules that form the BTh degree have given me valuable theoretical as well as practical and training experience, which has proven worthwhile for preparing myself for ministry. I am particularly interested in Greek and Hebrew. These ancient languages have aided my theological understanding and have opened up a whole new world with which to read the Bible. This has been a fulfilling journey; one which does not end with a degree certificate, but one which is a lifelong transformation process. I leave you with a quote from Will Durant: Knowledge is power, but only wisdom is liberty. 1 Faculty of Theology

5 Why study at the Faculty of Theology?/What does the course entail?/ Undergraduate study programmes in Theology Why study at the Faculty of Theology? The Faculty of Theology is renowned for its commitment to the following: The Bible. This remains the central point of reference for theology. Spirituality. Faith formation is of great importance. Academic excellence. The Faculty s standards of education compare with the best in the world. Lecturers. Lecturers are noted academics and also respected church leaders. A great student atmosphere. Theology students (tokkelokke) participate fully in campus life: tours, RAG, camps, sports, serenades and many more. International contacts. Students can benefit from the many international contacts of the Faculty. People study theology for a variety of reasons, not only in order to make it their profession. Some find it a fascinating field of which they would like to know more, whereas others search for spiritual enrichment through study or may want to equip themselves to function more effectively in their workplace. The Faculty also offers courses that will benefit students who do not necessarily want to become ministers, but who would like to enrich their lives. Enriching one s study in another field with insights and applications from theology has many advantages. By including modules from Religion Studies in another field of study, such as computer science, engineering, languages, psychology, social work or teaching, graduates will enter their chosen careers as better equipped, more fully developed people. What does the course entail? Theology deals with the basic questions of life: How do faith and religion influence people s lives? How does one approach ethical and moral questions in the workplace? How do theological insights inform good human resource practices? How does one cultivate ecological sensitivity and awareness? What about tax evasion and Christianity? How do religious values contribute to peace and good human relations? Can crime be stopped by appealing to people s beliefs and values? What is the meaning and purpose of life? Where does one find answers to the deepest life questions? How does one gain a better understanding of humanity in order to make a difference in the world? Some students feel called to work in the church as minister, pastor, priest. lay preacher, missionary or youth worker. Then studying theology is the way to go. Others find their calling in serving the community as social worker, development worker, psychologist, teacher, journalist or writer. Yet others will become engineers, lawyers or entrepreneurs. For all, studying theology will contribute to a greater understanding of humanity and society. Undergraduate study programmes in Theology The seven main sections in the study of theology focus on questions about the Bible and life. Old Testament Studies The Old Testament is concerned with God s care for creation and for humanity, and God s relationship with Israel. In Old Testament Studies questions on suffering, love, and how to live a life in God s presence, are addressed. New Testament Studies In the New Testament the story of Jesus is told and elaborated on from several perspectives. New Testament Studies focuses on the books of the New Testament and the first century Mediterranean context in which they originated. Church History and Polity The history of the Christian church and the lives and theology of great figures in history such as St Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin and Martin Luther, are studied. Church Polity is about the specific ways in which different denominations organise themselves. Science of Religion and Missiology Science of Religion focuses on the world religions, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, and their relationship to Christianity. Missiology investigates the outreach task of Christian faith communities. Dogmatics and Christian Ethics Dogmatics studies faith in God. Who is God? What is faith and how does it contribute to our ability to make sense of the world? Ethics explores what is the right thing to do in different situations. Why do we make constructive or destructive choices in our complex world? Practical Theology Practical Theology focuses on what Christians do - how they experience and express their faith. Worship, the meaning of the symbols and symbolic acts in public worship, helping people in need and in crisis, teaching faith and faith formation, as well as understanding the world in which we live, are the concerns of this field. Religion Studies (Biblical and Religious Studies) Religion Studies (formerly known as Biblical Studies) is a life-enriching course open to anyone who may be interested in religion. Students from diverse fields, such as engineering, architecture, music, political science, law, fine arts and many more choose to broaden their vision by taking this course. It addresses questions such as: Why are people religious? What did the ancient peoples believe? How do we understand and respect our neighbours from other religious denominations? For theology students this is a strongly recommended optional course. Contact information Prof Dirk Human Tel: +27 (0) /5 dirk.human@up.ac.za Faculty of Theology 2

6 Postgraduate study programmes in Theology/General information Postgraduate study programmes in Theology Baccalaureus Artium (Honores)(Theology) - BA(Hons)(Teol) The purpose of this programme is to provide graduate students with specialised knowledge, skills and competence in a particular field or fields of theology. Magister Philosophiae Applied Theology - MPhil The MPhil is a postgraduate programme. Theological studies can be pursued by candidates who already have tertiary qualifications equivalent to any bachelor s degree, not necessarily theology. Theology is applied to specific ministries, occupations or aspects of community life. A MPhil programme that specialises in the Psalms is also offered. Magister Divinitatis - MDiv The MDiv builds on the BTh programme. It is a structured master s degree programme based on coursework and focuses on advanced theological knowledge and practical skills that will meet the needs of church ministry. Churchspecific training and formation are offered in cooperation with particular church partners. Magister Artium(Theology) - MA(Theology) This programme offers students with BA(Hons)(Theol) degrees - or equivalent qualifications - an opportunity for theological specialisation and research at master s level. There are two possibilities, namely a programme with coursework and a mini-dissertation or a research master s consisting of a dissertation. The coursework modules offer the opportunity to acquire specialist skills in the practical field of ministry. Magister Theologiae - MTh This programme links up with the curriculum structure of the BTh. From a broad theological base, it moves towards more specialisation and research at master s level. Consult the general regulations for more information on master s qualifications. Philosophiae Doctor - PhD The programme that starts with the BA(Theol) and continues with the BA(Hons)(Theol) and MA(Theol) is concluded by the PhD. 7 General information Application New students may only register after successful admission. If provisionally admitted, you will still have to comply with the requirements of the Faculty where you want to register with your Grade 12 end of year NSC examination results. Thus new students will only be permitted to register once their application and admission processes are approved. Provisional admission is based on the results obtained in the Grade 11 end examination. Please take note that the final Grade 12 NSC results remain the determining factor with regard to admission. Furthermore, please note that the achievement of the minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission to any study programme. Late applications. Before you submit a late application, please contact the Faculty Administration Consultant to ensure that there is still space available. If the study programme is not subject to selection and if the Faculty still has space available, your application will be considered. Late applications are only accepted on condition that all the admission requirements for the relevant degrees are fully complied with. Should the student not comply with the requirements the student s application will not be considered. Application fees will not be refunded. A Grade 12 National Senior Certificate (NSC) with university exemption (endorsement) is required if Grade 12 has been obtained before Admission In order for prospective students with a NSC qualification to gain admission to any of the nine faculties at the University of Pretoria, applicants should comply with the following admission requirements: the minimum statutory and institutional requirements for degree studies recognised and appropriate combinations of subjects the required Admission Point Score (APS) as stipulated in the regulations and syllabi of each faculty English and/or Afrikaans on Grade 12 level The calculation of the APS is based on a candidate s achievement in any six recognised 20-credit subjects (not only designated subjects) by using the seven-point rating scale below. Achievement Achievement level Mark 7 Outstanding achievement % 6 Meritorious achievement 70-79% 5 Substantial achievement 60-69% 4 Adequate achievement 50-59% 3 Moderate achievement 40-49% 2 Elementary achievement 30-39% 1 Not achieved 0-29% Life Orientation is excluded from the calculation of APS. Language policy and medium of instruction In conducting its business, the University uses two official languages, namely Afrikaans and English. In formal education, the medium of instruction is either Afrikaans or English, or both of these languages, provided that there is a demand and that it is academically and economically justifiable. However, it remains the student s responsibility to ascertain on an annual basis in which language a module and any further level of that module is presented. In respect of administrative and other services, a student has the right to choose whether the University should communicate with him or her in Afrikaans or English. Academic Information Management Academic Information Management (AIM101 or [AIM111 and AIM121] depending on your programme) is compulsory for all new first-year students. AIM101 will be presented in the first or second semester depending on your programme. AIM111 will be presented in the first semester and AIM121 in the second semester. There is no exemption examination available for AIM101 or (AIM111 and AIM121). Compulsory Academic Literacy Test for registered first-year students PLEASE NOTE: The Academic Literacy Test does not replace the National Benchmark Test (NBT). A student with high academic potential can have a low level of academic literacy which may put the student s academic success at risk. The academic literacy levels of all new first-year students at the University of Pretoria are therefore measured by means of a standardised Academic Literacy Test. If necessary, they are then placed on a suitable academic literacy programme in accordance with their level of risk. This Academic Literacy Test is written only once and is compulsory for all new first-year students, regardless of whether the student has already written an admissions test or has completed a language course elsewhere. If the student later decides to change his/ her academic programme, the Academic Literacy Test does not need to be written again. Students may write the Academic Literacy Test in either English or Afrikaans. Students in the faculties of Health Sciences and Veterinary Science are obliged to write the test in English. Please refer to your Official programme for registration and start of the academic year for times and venues of the Academic Literacy Test.
