In this age of accountability, these areas have recently become even more important to the overall mission of the institution. Although involvement in these areas is part of every employee s job description, truly outstanding institutions have individuals who excel in each of these endeavors. Outstanding universities create an environment that values and celebrates outstanding teaching; teaching that supports the mission of the university by providing students not only with knowledge, but with meaningful instruction that encourages development of cognitive, social, and physical knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Effective teachers engage students in meaningful and practical experiences. The mission is fulfilled when students develop higher order skills in reasoning and creative thinking

2 so as to be able to utilize this knowledge in creative problem solving and life long learning. Research is an integral part of the university mission in that, as the boundaries of knowledge expand, new understandings, products, services, and processes are developed that increase our understanding, enhance quality of life, and inform best practice. The university mission is enhanced when research endeavors lead to practical, meaningful, and applicable improvement to the human condition. Service to the university, as well as the broader community, enhances the university mission by providing real life applications of and connections to best practice. In addition, active participation in the work of the institution utilizes the skill and expertise of individuals in meeting the overall mission of the university. Service to the profession and the broader community allows connections to be made that continue to enhance productivity, relationships, and quality of life. An effective institution is a part of a larger community. Effective and active involvement in teaching, research, and service by individuals in the university community clearly supports the mission of the university. Moreover, outstanding institutions, as noted by T. J. Sergiovanni, are those in which individuals excel in each of these areas so as to move from a participation investment (doing what is required of the job) to a performance investment where these efforts truly support and under gird the work of the enterprise.
