SERVICES, RESOURCES and EVENTS LiveSafe App Anonymous Reporting feature I recently spoke with a parent who indicated she wasn t aware of a feature of our free LifeSafe App. Among others, one of the great features of this app is that it allows users to anonymously report tips. This also allows students to upload pictures, video or audio as well as a tip to help aid in investigations. All of this can be reported anonymously if the student wishes. This is a great way for students to help relay important information to make our community more safe. Please encourage your students to download the app and aid our University Police Department by reporting incidents: Nutritional Counseling offered to students WVU Dining Services offers free nutritional counseling to all WVU students. Dining Services employs a full-time registered dietitian that can accommodate any nutritional needs of students. Services range from diabetes, weight loss, eating disorders, and food allergies just to name a few: To schedule an appointment, students may Cami McMillen at ccmcmillen@mail.wvu.edu. Outdoor Rec Center Offers Spring Trips and Rentals With the weather warming up, is your student interested in getting outside? The WVU Adventure WV Outdoor Rec Center offers day trips throughout the spring term in addition to training sessions on rock climbing or water sports. They also offer affordable rentals on camping, biking, rock climbing, canoeing and kayaking gear for students. For more, go to: ARTICLE OF INTEREST: Mental Health We often include articles on nationally trending topics, and mental health challenges in college age students is one of these as noted in this recent article: At WVU, our staff at the WVU Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services and our Office of Accessibility Services work directly with students who need support. These offices provide support free of charge so encourage your student to reach out today if they need assistance. Sophomore Celebration April 22 Rising sophomores (current freshman) are encouraged to attend the Sophomore Celebration which will be held at the Evansdale Residential Complex on April 22 from 5-8 with a short program beginning at 6. This program is for all first-year students to celebrate that they will be sophomores this coming fall! Dinner will be provided and the first 500 to attend will receive a
free t-shirt designed especially for their class. There will be other giveaways, music, and more! Encourage your student to attend! FINANCIAL UPDATES Financial Aid Award Letters are going out Award letters have been sent for first-time freshmen who will start in the Fall 2015 semester. Continuing students will receive notification in early April once their financial aid package is viewable online through the STAR account. If your student does not receive an award notification, please do the following: Have the student check for unsatisfied requirements on their STAR account (after logging in, select Financial Aid, the aid year, then Eligibility ) Make sure West Virginia University s school code (003827) is listed on the FAFSA Make sure your student is showing as officially admitted to WVU Questions? Contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@mail.wvu.edu or Follow us on social media for tips and reminders on Facebook (WVU Financial Aid) and Twitter (@WVUFinancialAid) or check out our webpage for more on understanding your award letter: TuitionPay Plan Information Thinking ahead for fall bills To help you plan ahead, WVU's Office of Student Accounts wants to remind students and their families that it is never too early to be thinking about how to pay for education costs. As a convenience, WVU offers the option to make payments on a monthly basis through Higher One s Tuition Payment Plan. The TuitionPay Plan is an interest-free alternative to lump-sum payments when bills are due. It allows you to: - Spread payments over a period of months, interest-free - Borrow less - save interest by using current income and savings to make monthly payments - Protect your investment - Tuition Protection Coverage for the bill-payer is offered at no extra charge
A Three-Pay Plan for Summer is currently available, with the first payment being due by May 1, Students are also able to enroll for a 12-Pay Plan for the academic year, also beginning May 1, The sooner you enroll, the smaller your monthly payments will be because you will have a longer amount of time over which to spread your payments. Please visit this website at for more information or to enroll. If you have any questions, please call Higher One at END OF THE YEAR WRAP UP Have your students give it up for good! As the spring semester draws to a close, your students are likely beginning to pack up their resident hall rooms, apartments, and houses for the summer. The WVU WECAN program is here to help them take care of the items that won t make it to fall. Students can drop off any unwanted items starting April 27 th in collection areas at all university residence halls or at one of four (4) drop-off locations around Morgantown. Acceptable items include but are not limited to furniture, clothing, appliances, décor, sporting equipment, electronics, and the list goes on. Items will become part of WVU s annual Blue & Gold Mine Sale that will be held at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, May 23 rd. This rummage sale event held every spring keeps roughly 30 tons of material out of local landfills. All proceeds benefit WVU s annual campaign for the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties. So, remind your students to give it up for good! Blue and Gold Mine Sale Collections will run from April 27th th -May 20 th. Collection locations include: All WVU Residence Halls, East Concourse of Milan Puskar Stadium (M-F 9 am 4 pm), Chateau Royale, Falling Run Rd, Seneca Center, and Woodburn School. Want to stock up on home goods for the fall semester? Stop by the sale at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, May 23rd from 7 am to 12 pm! Visit for more info. Spring Family Weekend April Reminder -- The Mountaineer Parents Club Spring Family Weekend is on April 24-26, Follow this link to see the schedule of events, including a WVU baseball game, the annual spring football game, family entertainment, the Spring Ring Day Ceremony, and much more: Be sure to check back often, as events may be added. Also, with the end of the semester just ahead (Residence Halls will close May 9 th at 5 p.m.), this might be a great time to visit and help your student start the move-out process and take a load of belongings home early. We hope to see you there!
ADVISING AND SCHEDULING DegreeWorks staying on track With summer/fall advising and registration underway, remind students to log onto their DegreeWorks account to check in on their progress. As WVU s online degree audit system, DegreeWorks helps students keep track of academic progress and hopefully speed time to graduation. It provides real-time advice and counsel by having all academic information in one convenient place and allows students to review plan B majors through the what If feature, calculate what GPA they need to achieve an overall goal, and plan classes for upcoming terms among other features. Students are able to easily see which classes and requirements have been completed and which still need to be filled. Encourage them to check it out today: Summer Schedule Now Online! Thousands of students take advantage of WVU s flexible summer schedule every summer to focus on challenging classes, get closer to graduation, or earn credit for an exciting travel or adventure experience. More than 2,000 courses are offered in 3, 6, 9 and 12 week formats. Students who stay in Morgantown love the laid-back atmosphere in the summer, and those who go home love the option to take one of the hundreds of online classes. Ask your advisor how summer courses can help you. Academic Innovation provides marketing and administrative oversight of summer academic programs. Priority registration began on March 30th. For more information, visit Summer classes at another institution If your student will be taking class(es) back home or at another institution over the summer, there are steps that need to be taken in advance to ensure that the credits will transfer as needed. The Transfer Equivalency System can assist students in determining how certain credits will transfer to WVU: Students must also apply to the institution that they wish to attend. The Transient Application Form must be completed by the student and their advisor and must have the proper signatures: When the class is completed, students must make sure that the transcripts are sent to WVU so the credits will officially transfer. If your student has any questions, they can speak with their advisor or the Office of Admissions. CAREER CORNER: Don t Drop the Ball Now! David Durham, Director of Career Services For our graduating seniors, their college experience will soon be coming to an end. Fresh back from spring break and with finals not far away, your senior is running on overload and focusing on finishing those end-of-semester projects and assignments.
With all this on your student s plate, there is little time to think of much else. Unfortunately, it is also the time when seniors should be finalizing their job searches and following up with employers that they may have interviewed with or spoken to at career fairs during the year. One of the most common responses we hear when surveying students that have not secured employment by graduation is that they were simply too busy in their final semester to focus on anything other than their coursework. While it is always important to finish strong, it is equally important that your student doesn t forget why they came to WVU after high school. For many seniors, they have literally been preparing for their first professional employment for 16 years 70% of their life! So, don t drop the ball now! It has never been more important for students to manage their time effectively. If your son or daughter is not sure what they should do to move ahead with their career plans, encourage them to contact the Career Services Center as quickly as possible. Even if they have not started their job search, it is not too late. (It is late but not too late). Many employment opportunities continue to become available during the spring. While February and March are the peak recruiting months, our employers are continuously in search of quality graduates. We list hundreds of new job postings on MountaineerTRAK every week and will continue receiving entry-level employment opportunities throughout remainder of the spring semester and well into summer. SO YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER IS NOT GRADUATING YET? The exact same conditions exist for your student searching for an internship or meaningful summer employment. While the deadline to apply for internship opportunities with many of the world-class employers like the FBI, Disney or NASA ended long before the Christmas break, many employers (just like your student) found themselves overwhelmed with work and were unable to follow up with all the great internship candidates as early as they had planned. Now they are scrambling, hoping that some of the students they interviewed earlier are still available. So whether your son or daughter is ready to enter the workforce in May or needs a strong summer work experience to beef up their resume it is not too late if they act soon. Encourage your student to access their MountaineerTRAK account and search the current job postings. If they give you that confused look and say what in the heck is MountaineerTRAK instruct them to run (not walk) to the Career Services Center as quickly as possible. We are here to help them succeed! Career Services is located in the Mountainlair directly above the WVU Barnes and Noble Bookstore with hours from 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM Monday through Friday. Your student can also reach us at , or at careerservices@mail.wvu.edu. Also learn more at or on Katie Gallagher and Lisa Hanselman Office of Parent Relations West Virginia University
