3 Overview of Britannica Online School Edition Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 is much more than just the encyclopaedia. It includes: Four separate levels for Pre Kindergarten to Year 2 (Learning Zone) Year 3 to Year 5 (Primary School) Year 5 to 9 (Middle School), Year 10+ (High School Students) plus a concise encyclopedia Over 126,000 encyclopedia articles Over 27,000 images (photos, illustrations, maps) 3,300 animations, audio clips and 100 full length videos Over 100,000 student-friendly web sites Current journal & magazine articles World atlas & country comparisons Dictionary & thesaurus Britannica s collection of student learning materials & teacher resources. New Editorial Board of Advisors for Encyclopædia Britannica 15 Member Board that includes: Nobel Laureates Pulitzer Prize Winners Leading Scholars Writers Artists Public Servants Activists at the top of their fields Their mission is to guide the development of the first and most authoritative encyclopedia on the Internet, first launched in How to access Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 Your students are able to access Britannica Online from School and from home: 1. Within the School Go to and you should be able to access the site. If you get the failed login page please contact Britannica immediately on (02) or bol@britannica.com.au 2. From home If your school has a secure website (i.e. one that is password protected) you can access the schools license of Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 from home. 4 Britannica Online School Edition PreK- 12 Home Page From the homepage you are able to search the complete site. EXERCISE 1 1. From the Search All Levels box type in the topic Antarctica. 2. This search will bring up the three levels of comprehension, allowing students to choose the level that s right for them. 3. Look at the Journals and Magazines results also broken down by Primary, Middle School & High School (see the list of journals in the back of the training manual). 4. Review Britannica Concise Encyclopedia. 5. Look at the Web s Best Sites, again broken down by Primary, Middle School & High School. 6. Look at the Multimedia results, note the citation bar and discuss copyright. 7. Look at the Learning Materials. Click on Brr exercise and try and get one right and one wrong. 8. Then go back and have a look at the Ecosystems of the World. 9. Click into Antarctica in the contents table and go through the Help and Glossary tabs. 10. When you get to Activities click on Adapted organisms study guide and try to complete the activity in one minute. Once complete go back to the Search All Levels results for Antarctica. EXERCISE 2 1. Enter the first article on Antarctica from Britannica Student (Middle School). 2. Note the articles Table of Contents in the left hand column. 3. Note the Expand Your Research area on the right. 4. the article or Print the article. 5. Click Cite Article (citations are in APA & MLA style). 6. Note there are scrolling images in the left hand column, these only appear in the Student and Primary articles. Also note that many of the images now have a magnifying glass allowing you to move around the image. 7. Unsure of the meaning of the word, double click on any word to bring up the quick click dictionary, it will also pronounce the word for you (great for students with English as a second language). In the left hand column of each page there are instructions on how to use the dictionary. EXERCISE 3 1. Now take a look at the Top Tool Bar (stay in the Antarctica Article). 2. Notice you can go back to the Home Page here don t click this. 3. Click on the Dictionary and type in the word Specific note the results. Click the red speakerphone and listen to the pronunciation of the word then go back. 4. Now click on the Learning Materials this will link you to all subjects and all the different levels of learning materials. 5. Click into each different subject try and click on one of the eight different types of learning materials. You have already viewed an Exercise and a Study Guide. Try look at one of the following: an Interactive Lesson, a Manipulative, a Web Site Activity, an Encyclopedia Activity and a Learning in Action activity. Make a note of the differences between each one. 6. Take a quick look at some of the Teacher Resources. You can move to any of the Encyclopedias at any time by going to the tabs at the bottom of every page or choosing your level from the Main Home Page. Schools may duplicate as needed. 5 Primary School Primary School is one of three encyclopedias. Each of the encyclopedias has their own home page and from within the school a link can be set up directly to each of the home pages. This reference source has been developed for students at primary school or older pupils with learning difficulties. EXERCISE 3 1. Click on Primary School. 2. Show each of the features of the home page look at the Play a Game Feature with interactive materials for Maths, English & Science, Student Activities, there is a different activity each day, Animal of the Day, there is also a different animal every day, Media Library with over 2,000 video & audio clips and Interactive Lessons, Learning Zone (for early learners PreK-2), Play, Discover, Read & Draw, Discover our World with a wealth of information on Asia, Europe and America and the ABC Behind the News (you no longer need to tape it, just click onto the video and play it) & CBBC News Feeds. 3. Under Teacher Resources, click on World Atlas where you have Continents, Countries, States & Territories, Oceans & Seas. 4. Go to Continents and choose Africa, show each of the specific maps. 5. From the Political Map choose Egypt and show the profile and articles. EXERCISE 4 1. Search for chinia - misspell the word and when there are no results. 2. Click the not sure of spelling box. Learning Zone This database is suitable for Pre Kindergarten up to Year 2. Learning Zone has an interactive atlas, online art activities, interactive games and learning materials, audio and video and vocabulary builders. It is designed to teach concepts that children are curious about, such as geography, numbers, time, sounds and much more. Content and exercises are appropriate for young learners. Learning Zone is made for classroom use in any discipline, based on direction and feedback from children and teachers. Activities and materials teach the same concepts taught in the classroom. EXERCISE 1 1. From the primary home page click on Learning Zone. 2. Review Explore click on the video for Singapore. 3. Click on Play and choose Sounds (with a picture of a trumpet) then choose lets read and then click let s play. 4. Take a look the Read feature and look up Zz and find zigzag. 5. Now click on the Draw feature choose the alien and try and draw it. Good Luck! Middle School This database is suitable for middle school students from years 5-9. EXERCISE 5 1. From the main home page click on Middle School. 2. Review Important People, Big Events, Discover Asia, Highlights, Video Collection and the ABC Behind the News & CBBC News Feeds. 3. Explore Featured Spotlights have a look at the list of more spotlights. Have a look at the Encyclopædia Britannica's Guide to Shakespeare spotlight. Schools may duplicate as needed. 6 4. Take a look at World Atlas. Note the Student and EB levels are both powered by Google Maps. Click Hybrid and then type in type in the name of your country try and zoom into your school. Take a look at the Summary, Profile and Article. 5. When finished click on Related Maps, click onto a major town or city, if there is an article on that particular place it will bring the article up. EXERCISE 6 1. Search for Earthquake 2. Look at the search results Encyclopedia, Journals and Magazines, The Web s Best Sites, Multimedia and Learning Materials. 3. Discuss how you could create a lesson plan from this information. There are numerous ways of looking for topics on the site, including A-Z Browse. The subject browse really helps teachers when students are looking for research topics. EXERCISE 7 1. Go to Subject Browse and click on Science. 2. Choose a topic and then click on the sub-categories and choose the topic of interest. Senior High School This database contains the information from the full 32 volume print set. EXERCISE 8 1. From the main home page click on Senior High School. 2. Review the Biography of the Day, This Day in History, Timelines, News Feeds, Britannica Classics and Biographies. EXERCISE 9 1. Click on Discover Asia and choose your country and return to the home page. 2. Note the difference between the depth of content between Senior High School and Middle School. You have the ability to compare one country with another. This feature appears in all three levels with Senior High School having a much more in-depth level of content than Middle School and Primary School. EXERCISE Go into Country Comparisons. 2. Select Singapore and Brazil compare the results. You are also able to do advanced searching. EXERCISE Click Advanced Search (next to search box). 2. Enter in exact phrase, China and again into the all of these words box. 3. Enter into the without these words box porcelain to exclude porcelain from the results. 4. Then go to multimedia and show the bone china plate, go back to Advanced Search and next to porcelain add bone. 5. Press Go to see refined article search results. 6. 7 Learning Materials Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 has hundreds of interactive lessons, exercises, manipulatives, study guides, learning in action visuals, website activities and encyclopaedia activities to support Maths, English, Science and Social Studies in the classroom. PRIMARY SCHOOL LEVEL MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL EXERCISE There are several ways to access the Learning Materials from the Primary Home Page. There is a tab within the Menu at the top of the page, from within Student Activities, Play A Game, Teacher Resources and the Animation Collection. 2. Review all the above areas. 3. Go to Teacher Resources Learning Materials where it advises, You can also search the Learning Materials by grade, subject, and type click into the search option and make your selection. 4. Choose Grade Level Primary Subject Mathematics Type of Resource Interactive Lessons, click search and view results. 5. Click on the first topic, Animal Flash and complete the exercise & view Activities. EXERCISE Return to the Middle School Home Page and click into Learning Materials within the menu at the top of the page. 2. Click English, Primary - Interactive Lessons, and choose the lesson called Diamonds. 3. Complete the story and review the worksheets.. HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL - ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA EDITION EXERCISE Go to the Encyclopædia Britannica Home Page and from within the area, on the left hand side, titled Learning Materials choose Science. 2. Click into Biology, Interactive Lessons, click into Digestive Systems and view all areas Introduction, Narration, Glossary, Links, Animation, Activity Sheet, Quiz & Lesson Plan. EXERCISE Within the Learning Materials, go to Social Studies, World History, Web Site Activities, click on A Very Inventive Chinese Home and view exercise. Workspace Britannica Online Workspace is a powerful tool with many uses. Students can use the Workspace when they are working on research papers and school projects and save materials (including photos, websites, encyclopedia articles and learning materials). The student/teacher can also access them from a different computer later. Project teams can even share the same collection of resources by using a shared Workspace name. EXERCISE There are two ways to enter Workspace, from any of the four home pages or from an article. You will need to login to the Workspace prior to starting your research. 2. Go to Workspace through the top tool bar from any of the homepages. 3. From here you can Create a Workspace, Open Your Workspace or See a Shared Workspace. You will need to enter a unique Username and Password. 4. You can set up your project folders, search for content, edit and delete, rename projects, write notes and even export the content of your Workspace into an excel spreadsheet to save on your own drive. Always click Save after you change anything in Workspace. 5. If you have entered the Workspace from the Main Home Page when you search, it will search across all three encyclopedias. Put a search topic into the search bar, when you have selected your article you can either click onto the save icon ( ) which appears next to the articles title, or go into the article and click on the Save to Workspace tab which appears at the top of the page. 8 6. You can save any article, multimedia or website link here. If you have not created a workspace account or are not logged in it will prompt you to do so at this point. 7. When you click Save from the search results page, it will prompt you to either create a new project folder or select a previously saved project folder. If you have created a project folder. Note that in a Shared Workspace there is no save option as you are only able to view content in this area. 8. Workspace also has a Notes option, which allows you to write your own notes to share with students. There is space for 250 characters including spaces. 9. As Workspace is saved on Britannica s servers and not the school server you are able to have as many Workspaces & Projects as you require. 10. Share your Workspace & Projects with your class or faculty through See A Shared Workspace. 11. You are able to access your Workspace from any computer, anywhere. EXERCISE Take the Getting Started with Britannica School Edition PreK-12 go through the features you have not view yet. 2. Make sure you click on Year in Review in Senior High School and explore this feature, particularly noting World Affairs. 3. Also don t miss exploring the Timelines feature. How to promote Britannica Online in the School Staff awareness and training ensure that all your staff know about your subscription to Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 and talk to the students on an ongoing basis Encourage class teachers to use the Learning Materials for their lessons Encourage students to use Britannica Online rather than the internet Promote the remote access to Britannica Online in your School newsletter Ensure that Britannica is featured prominently on the School Website and is easy to access. Look at the Countless Ways Your School Can Use Britannica Online School Edition Pre K-12 sheets on Page 12. Discuss how the students can use the sheets and get the teachers to brainstorm some of their own ideas. 13 Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 Articles Britannica s 151,800 articles are noted for their interesting and informative content. When you choose a Senior High School article you will see a page that looks like this one. If you choose a Middle School article or Primary School article, you will see a slightly different display. For all the encyclopedias, we have included some features that will make exploring that content even easier. Find Your Way Use the links below the header to return to the Main Home Page, use the Dictionary, browse Learning Materials, find Teachers Resources, log into Workspace, look at the Guided Tour or get more Help with the site. The Article The text of the article appears in the centre of the page. Media that accompany articles are arranged to the left of the text. To see a larger version of an image or play a media element, click on it. If there is a magnifying glass on the bottom right hand corner of the image this means you can zoom in on the image by holding the mouse over it. Related content accompanies many of the articles. Use the buttons on the top of the left column to find maps, flags, tables and more. For example, click Images to see a list of images indexed to whale. Longer articles are divided into separate pages. You will find a link to the next section at the top and bottom of the page. You can also go directly to different sections of the article by using the article s Table of Contents, which is also displayed on the left side of the page. Some tables of contents are very detailed and include subheadings as well as headings. Click the plus sign (+) next to a heading to view subheadings. You can also display the entire Table of Contents by clicking the link at the top. Switch Libraries If you d like to find encyclopedia articles and content at a higher reading level, use the buttons at the bottom of the page to switch to a different library. Choose Senior High School for Years 10-12, Middle School for Years 5-9, or Primary School for Years K -5. If you d like to print an article, you can switch to a printer-friendly format. You can share an article with a friend via . Also, if you plan to refer to an article in a report or paper, we provide a correctly formatted citation. Just click on the Print, and Cite links at the top of the article. Search Again You can also quickly see search results from other libraries by entering a word in the Search Again box then selecting a library from the menu and clicking GO. 14 Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12 Learning Materials Britannica s collection of Learning Materials can help you perfect your skills and expand your knowledge. After you have selected English, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies you will see a list of available activities. Choose a type of activity from the appropriate level, then select a specific example, and a new window will open, as seen below. Choosing Learning Materials In each subject area, Learning Materials are grouped into narrower subject areas, grade levels and different types of activities. For example, Science includes Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and so on. Under Life Sciences, you will see different grade levels and links to Interactive Lessons, Study Guides, Exercises and more. Click on a type of Learning Material to see the complete listing. To open an Interactive Lesson, Study Guide, or other activities simply click on the title. Another browser window will open and the selected item will be displayed. More Learning Materials If you would like to see Interactive Lessons, Exercises, Study Guides, Manipulatives, Learning in Action, Website and Encyclopedia Activities for a different subject, you can use the links in the left column. If you have difficulty opening any of the Learning Materials, make sure you have the proper software plug-in. Links to plug-ins are provided when appropriate. Sample Activity When you choose one of the Learning Materials, you will see a second window. With new articles appearing each month, you can explore the latest developments in science, politics, the arts and current events around the world. You can find full-text articles from the following magazines online at When you search on a topic, click the link that says Journals and Magazines at the top of the column on the right side of the search results page. This will take you to the magazine articles relating to your search.
