Concusion 2 The Aviva Times of Our Lives Report was aunched in Spring 2012 and tracks the key experiences, ambitions and concerns of peope in the UK today as they journey through the ages of ife. The report aso ooks at weath accumuation and 3 peope s financia highs and ows, incuding how much extra income they wish they had to fee secure, and it provides an 3 insight into their hopes and fears for their future and refections on the past. 4 In the past six months, Britain s squeezed midde ages have become ever more squeezed, refecting the continuing effects the current economic cimate is having on peope s ives, especiay in the age range. They have the most 6 financia concerns and worries and are east optimistic about achieving their goas for the next two years. 6 The squeezed midde ages are aso those with the argest income gap - the difference between the amount of monthy 6 income that peope currenty have and what they fee they need to be comfortabe. On average it has jumped 13%, indicating a considerabe increase in pressure on everyone s finances. But the 35-44s fee they need an additiona 32% of 8 income to fee secure. 8 From income gap to insurance gap - for the first time the report ooks at what peope think their possessions are worth 9 and finds that on average they are underestimating them by 10,000. This insurance gap exists at a ages but is greatest 9 for the youngest age groups. 10 Of a peope s possessions eectronics are deemed the most essentia, but it is the famiy car and home insurance that are the east ikey items to be cut refecting how much vaue we pace on mobiity and the cherished beongings we coect 11 throughout our ives. 12 Property ownership continues to be the biggest buiding bock of weath and generay most peope think the first home 13 shoud be bought at 25 - considering that first homes are now not generay bought unti the 30s, this is one goa unikey Notes to Editors 14 to be achieved. 6 Mind the Gap The Insurance Gap Brits unaware of beongings true vaue Focused on the vaue of tabets, aptops and mobies, we sometimes forget about the basics carpets, couches and cooking pots. Brits are underestimating their possessions by over 10,000 on average. With the cost of cothing, carpets, curtains, white goods, and furniture ikey to run into the 1000s, it s cear that peope are not aways considering a their possessions when estimating their vaue. This creates an insurance gap between what they think they have and the average insured amount, which peaks among the age group at amost 15,000. As a percentage of their actua possessions vaue however, the 18-24s have the biggest insurance gap (123%), and this steadiy decreases with age as peope become more aware of the vaue of their beongings. For those without insurance, the cost of repacing beongings in an unexpected event may be much more than anticipated. It is aso important to ensure that peope have the right cover to protect a the possessions they ve buit up over the years. 8 Emotiona Heath The U-shaped Curve of Life Deepens The research iustrates a U-shaped curve in which the youngest and odest peope are the most optimistic about achieving their goas and those in the squeezed midde ages are the most pessimistic, athough contentment actuay increases with age. This is simiar but more accentuated than the curve found in Spring The 18-24s are most optimistic of any age group, with an optimism score of 56%. However, it is 35, the start of one of the most pessimistic age groups that is sti considered the best age to be by a aduts. Lower pressure, more optimistic Autumn 2012 Spring 2012 Higher pressure, more negative Voted 25 the best age to be, citing most persona ambition and potentia as key reason Most worried about career progress (30%), fewest anxious about paying the bis (20%) Most rapid period of income growth a 6,000 rise from to age group Highest househod income at 32,523 Pace idea age to be at 30 - the midde of their own age group. Idea Miestones Twenties the decade to tick off the targets It s no wonder younger peope are feeing the pressure to achieve. According to Brits ist of idea miestones, they are expected to do everything from moving out of their parents home to having their first chid a in their twenties. As we as moving out, 21 year ods are supposed to buy a first car, start saving into a pension, and find the time to trave. Expectations of when miestones shoud be achieved are ambitious, with the idea age for buying a first home put at 25, compared to an actua nationa average of 31 1, and getting married put at 27, compared with an actua average of Changing times move the goa posts Younger peope tend to have a sighty more reaistic view of idea ages than oder peope, perhaps as it is they who are facing these miestones currenty year ods put the age to buy a first house and get married at 28, coser to their actua average ages and three years higher than the over 65s say is the idea age for these miestones. 10 What we Want to Achieve Famiy and finances in po position Two-year goas Goas over the next two years remain simiar to those of Spring 2012 and cutivating a happy famiy ife is a key goa across the age groups, usuay ranking in the top three. Managing persona finances is aso high up on everyone s ist of things to achieve. The priorities for the age group incude getting estabished in their career (44%), buying a first home (24%) and moving out of their parents home (23%), as they ook to set themseves up for adut ife. Having become more estabished, 25-34s pan to focus on their persona ife, with a quarter aiming to get married or sette with their partner in the next two years and a fifth (22%) intending to have chidren. 11 What we re Worrying About Heath and weath cause a ifetime of worry Persona and famiy heath (35%) and the cost of househod bis (26%) remain the main concerns across a the age groups over the next six to tweve months. These come above worries about career progress, savings and pension provision, suggesting that the immediate high cost of iving is a greater worry than onger term financia stabiity. Brits concerns mirror their goas. They worry about the things that coud prevent them from meeting their aspirations. 13 Concusion The second Aviva Times of Our Lives Report provides strong insight into how the current economic and socia backdrop is affecting the goas, concerns and finances of Britons at a stages of ife. Peope in every age group have a cear picture of their idea ife, but it is apparent that the externa environment is having a significant impact on their finances and optimism and potentiay on their abiity to achieve what they aspire to. However despite this financia pressure and worry, the Report reveas that home is sti where the heart is and maintaining a happy famiy ife is a goa that remains constant throughout ife. And whie it may be the age when financia pressure starts to peak, 35 remains the age that most peope say they want to be - this is the age when peope fee most sef confident and beieve they have the happiest persona ife. However echoing our Spring 2012 findings, ife appears to get better as you get oder with over-65s the most content. Whether the next generation wi fee so optimistic when they reach the same age is yet to be seen. Aviva Times of our Lives Report 13
