1 Anett Varga PORTFOLIO 2014
(Esterházy Péter) MOTIVATION Why do you want to go there? What do you expect from it? These are the most frequent and hardest questions to answer regarding to the University of Applied Arts in Wien. Though I m forty (and it is not usual to study at this age). Though I ll get my third degree soon. Though I have an exiting, variable and free work. Though family and state existence wait for me at home. Though I paint anyway, no matter what. Though lots of people love me here. How could I explain that I need space, fellowship, interest, similar people, eventful discussions (nincs vessző) and professional help? That I have plenty of ideas which are no worthy to show here? That I m terribly bored of whatisit questions? That I feel separated? That I don t want to explain my pictures from the visual basics? That I don t want to provoke endless provincial arguments coming from a performance idea in a provincial context? That I need permanent creative process, I would like to try out my new ideas, I m eager to have open-minded and affiliated recipients, and I desire innovative and interactive art experiments? That I don t want to be another victim of corrupt contexts and political games? That I feel here the legal mainstream of art trend false and hopeless? I need space, community and opportunities to try out myself. It is not ineffectual for me. This is my real life.

11 INK AND AQUARELLE Works, studies on paper with ink and aquarell
12 PERIODS WHAT IT WAS BEFORE: I have learnt a lot about traditional painting techniques. I worked first of all on big-sized canvases with acrylic and oil but I also liked paper-aquarelle-ink variations. After a while I was interested in different factures of various materials, how the paint behaves on them, how much the canvas can be loaded, and also how different materials can be mixed. Compositions were always crowded, full of vortexes, swirls and forms emerged from a sort of abysm, ever lack of figurality. WHAT IT IS NOW: I have consciously reduced exhibitions and presentations since 2008, for more reasons. On one hand, I began to interest in other types of visuality, and I needed more time to try out and mature them. I have tasted figurality. I feel the relation and combination of abstract-nonfigurative and figurative-real forms very exciting. After a while I started to be interested in pause, visibility-transparency, loaded space and nothing as a contrast on a picture. I have tried new techniques as montage, collage and PERIODS prints. The pictures are usually smaller than before; I often use sequence, rhythm and recurrence as visual means of expression. Recently I often work on plexi, mixing it with canvas and serigraph. I m curious about performing flat pictures in an enterieur, disengaging them from two-dimensional plane, offering them as organic parts of the space. On the other hand, the reason to reduce the number of exhibitions was to build up that wide international art-related relationship I can use for further art activities. WHAT IT WILL BE: Learning a lot from my art studies and art project management experiences, I have turned my interest also to interactive genres such as theatre and its visual projections, mostly to performance, visual (light) effects on screen creating special context and transforming emotions to the rehearsal in order to involve them into a common game. Taking this direction, I could effectively use our existing cultural association with its international relationships and art project possibilities.
