2 54 Law and Management Studies COLLEGE RULES FOR DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS The General Academic Rules of the University shall, where applicable, also apply to the qualifications offered in the college COLLEGE OF LAW AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES RULES FOR DEGREES, DIPLOMAS AND CERTIFICATES Note: The inclusion of any programme, course of study module in this Handbook does not imply that the College of Law and Management Studies is compelled to offer it. LM-U1 Qualifications The following undergraduate qualifications are conferred: Certificate in Business Administration CBA Bachel of Administration B Admin Bachel of Business Administration BBA Bachel of Commerce B Com Bachel of Commerce in Accounting BCom (Acc) Bachel of Business Science in Actuarial Science BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Economics BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Finance BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Human Resource Management BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Industrial Relations BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Infmation Systems & Technology BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Management BBusSc Bachel of Business Science in Marketing B Bus Sc Bachel of Business Science in Supply Chain Management B Bus Sc Bachel of Laws LLB LM-U Part-Time Students Students who register on a part-time basis shall devote not less than the minimum prescribed period f the qualification plus two additional semesters of study. LM-U3 Completion of Qualifications GR8 applies, save that, in exceptional cases, a student may be permitted to substitute a module f a prescribed module.

3 College Rules 55 LM-U4 Module Limitations Except with the permission of the relevant School Board, and provided that the outstanding modules(s) are offered in the semester in question, a student shall not: 1) register f any level module unless the student simultaneously registers f any level 1 prescribed elective modules which may be outstanding in terms of the curriculum prescribed f the qualification f which the student is registered; ) register f any level 3 module unless the student simultaneously registers f any level 1 prescribed elective modules which may be outstanding in terms of the curriculum prescribed f the qualification f which the student is registered. LM-U5 Limit on Number of Module Enrolments 1) Part-time students shall not register f modules totalling me than 48 credits in any one semester and 96 credits in any one year. ) Full-time students in good standing, and not subject to specific probationary limitations, shall not register f modules exceeding those specified in the programmes set out below in any one semester year, save that in exceptional circumstances such students may be granted permission to register f additional modules carrying a credit weight of no me than credits per semester. LM-U6 Supplementary Examinations 1) A student may, at the discretion of the Board of the School in which (s)he is registered, be permitted to write supplementary examinations in all modules f which the student obtained a mark of at least 30% provided that passing all those supplementary examinations will result in the student fulfilling all the requirements f the qualification. ) A student may, at the discretion of the Board of the School in which (s)he is registered, be permitted to write supplementary examinations in all modules f which the student obtained a mark of at least 30% provided that passing all those supplementary examinations will result in the student being able to fulfil all the requirements f the qualification in the subsequent semester, assuming an acceptable credit load in terms of rule LM-U5. LM-U7 Progression and Exclusion To maintain their good standing, and to avoid either warning of slow academic progress exclusion from the University, students must maintain minimum rates of progression through their qualifications. Minimum rates of acceptable progression vary from qualification to qualification, and are set out in the programmes detailed in this handbook. LM-U8 Duly Perfmed Certificates Conditions f the attainment of a duly perfmed certificate are reflected in the syllabi f the relevant modules and will be applied in all these modules.

4 56 Law and Management Studies UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATES Certificate in Business Administration LM-U9 Eligibility 1) Applicants are eligible to apply to register f the Certificate in Business Administration provided that they: a) have successfully completed the Seni Certificate and have achieved a sce of not less than 4 NSC points (excluding Life Orientation) and have passed Mathematics at grade 11 level; b) are eligible f a Mature Age Conditional Exemption and have at least three years appropriate wk experience; c) are over 45 years of age. ) Applicants seeking admission under b) c) above shall be required to attend an interview and sit an entrance examination and may be required to fulfil further conditions befe acceptance. LM-U10 Structure Students shall complete the following programme: Curriculum f Certificate in Business Administration (Pietermaritzburg & Westville) Code Name of Module Credits Semester CBAPOEB The Environment of Business CBAP0MS Introduction to Management Science 1 CBAP0CP Business Computing and Logical Reasoning CBAP0CM Business Communication Total Credits 64 LM-U11 Exclusion Students shall not be eligible f re-admission to a module after two failures in that module, and in such case shall be excluded from further study towards the Certificate. LM-U1 Progression to BBA Refer to LM-U13 point below.

5 College Rules 57 BACHELORS DEGREES Bachel of Business Administration LM-U13 Eligibility Applicants are eligible to apply to register f the qualification of Bachel of Business Administration if they have previously: 1) obtained a matriculation certificate and in addition obtained a minimum of 8 NSC points (excluding Life Orientation), Level 3 Mathematics, Level 4 English (home first additional language) and Level 4 Life Orientation equivalent. ) a) been awarded the UKZN Certificate in Business Administration; and b) achieved f the Certificate a weighted average of at least 60% as well as a final mark of at least 55% f the Introduction to Management Science module (CBAP0MS) equivalent. Bachel of Commerce (Extended Curriculum) Bachel of Commerce Extended Curriculum (BCOM4) A student who is admitted to the BCom4 programme shall follow an approved programme of study. The BCOM4 extended curriculum is a four-year programme designed to assist students

18 70 Law and Management Studies to develop competencies in language, numeracy, writing and critical thought, as well as discipline competence in ce management disciplines. Specifically developed learning opptunities are provided in that students attend the regular lectures with other first year students, but the courses are extended by small group tutials and/ lectures, in addition to the regular lectures. Hence, it gives alternative access to students from disadvantaged schools who do not qualify f admission to the College on the grounds of their matriculation results, but who have a matriculation certificate and are from deciles 1-5 schools (as per National Department of Education ranking). LM-U5 Eligibility Applicants are eligible to apply to register f the BCom4 degree (Extended Curriculum) if they have obtained a matriculation certificate and in addition obtained a minimum of 8 NSC points, Level 3 Mathematics, Level 4 English (home first additional language) and Level 4 Life Orientation, equivalent examination. 23 College Rules 75 Bachel of Business Science LM-U8 Eligibility Applicants are eligible to apply to register f the qualification of Bachel of Business Science if they have obtained a matriculation certificate and in addition obtained a minimum of 33 NSC points (excluding Life Orientation), Level 6 Mathematics, Level 4 English (home first additional language) and Level 4 Life Orientation, equivalent. LM-U9 Structure 1) To qualify f the award of the Bachel of Business Science degree, students shall complete one of the programmes listed below. ) A Bachel of Business Science student who does not meet the requirements f progression to the fourth year of study, who elects not to proceed to the fourth year, and who meets the requirements f the Bachel of Commerce, shall be deemed to have qualified f the Bachel of Commerce degree. Bachel of Laws (4 Year Undergraduate Qualification) A Bachel of Laws is the academic qualification required f admission as an advocate and has become the usual academic qualification f attneys. The qualification extends over eight semesters of full-time study and is also offered on a part-time basis, whereby lectures are held after hours and the period of study is extended to a minimum of ten semesters. The LLB qualification is also offered on a post-graduate basis, with credit (up to 56 credit points) granted f modules taken as part of a pri qualification. LM-U36 Persons holding a BProc Qualification A person who was awarded a BProc qualification from the previous University of Natal the previous University of Durban-Westville shall be entitled to the qualification of LLB from the University if s/he passes 60 credits while registered f an LLB f at least four semesters of full-time study six semesters of part-time study. LM-U37 Expiration of Credits If a student who was previously registered at the University has not registered at the University f six semesters longer, such student will not be credited with any module that he/she has previously passed, if such module has been identified as obsolete in terms of GR15.

42 94 Law and Management Studies LM-U38 Students from other qualifications taking Law Modules 1) The Dean & Head of School shall have discretion to limit the number of students taking the Legal Studies maj, who have passed the first year modules and wish to proceed to second year. In the event that the Dean & Head of School chooses to exercise such discretion, the students permitted to proceed to second year shall be selected on merit. Notwithstanding the number at which the Dean & Head of School chooses to set the limit, any student achieving an average of at least 60% in the first year legal modules shall be entitled to proceed to the second year. ) The Dean & Head of School shall have discretion to determine which modules shall be open to all students of the University, and which shall be reserved f LLB students only. GENERAL RULES FOR HONOURS DEGREES LM-P1 Eligibility Within the general University framewk regulating admissions: 1) Students may apply f selection to register f Honours qualifications offered in the College if they have obtained a minimum of 55% in the level 3 modules in the discipline(s) relevant to the programmes in LM-P4. ) With the approval of the Board, the School which is responsible f the administration of the named degree may: a) limit the number of applicants admitted to a programme module in any academic year; b) prescribe a selection process to be followed f the consideration of applicants f admission; c) in addition to 1) above, prescribe minimum levels of general achievement and/ achievement in specific modules at undergraduate level in der to qualify f the selection process and/ registration f any particular module.
