2 NGO s NGOs are private organizations that pursue activities to relieve suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services, or undertake community development. Qualifications vary depending on the organization, but some of the most common qualifications are: Bachelor s degree sometimes unpaid starting out Experience in the field (usually start as a volunteer) Multilingual Mobility Can endure harsh conditions Understand different cultures Culture and gender sensitivity Interpersonal skills

4 Government Jobs The Federal Government is the one of the largest employer of anthropologists, second only to academia. Different jobs within the government: International Development Contract Employee Cultural Affairs Natural Resource Management Forensics Security and Defense Government jobs don t often require that you have a PhD, but will call for either a bachelor s or master s degree.

6 Government cont. International Development - Provide aid during disasters, implement global health care, fight global poverty, build schools overseas, etc. Promotes human rights by developing quality of life. Your expertise would be valuable since this department interacts with countless cultures. Cultural Affairs - Oversees cultural affairs to build friendly, peaceful relations between the people of the U.S. and other countries (ECA, 2013). You would foster professional exchanges with individuals from different cultures and possibly help build public and private sponsorships. Natural Resource Management - Management of natural resources...how management affects the quality of life for both present and future generations (Wikipedia, 2013). You d conduct research on how said management is affecting citizens and various groups of people. Security and Defense - You d most likely conduct research to ensure that clients needs are met when security measures are implemented. You could also potentially work on a local, national, or international level. Consider being a government contractor as opposed to a traditional government employee.

7 Academia: Teaching and Research Jobs in teaching and research require further schooling beyond a bachelor s degree With a Master s degree, you may be able to get a job teaching at a junior college (such as Salt Lake Community College) and less likely at a 4 year university (such as U of U). Jobs at Museums and research at a university require Doctoral degree. With a Doctorate you can find teaching and research jobs (usually doing both) at universities and colleges of all kinds. These jobs are often very competitive. Museum work is also much easier to find with a Doctoral degree. Aside from teaching in Anthropology, your degree may lead you down a different academic path such as Human Biology and Medicine, other social sciences such as Sociology, Psychology and Education.

8 Academia continued.. In order to have any type of job security in anthropology academia, having a PhD and being tenured, or as least on tenuretrack, at a research university is key--publish or PERISH. How to start this journey? Similar process to most grad app paths: GPA, GRE (esp. verbal and analytic writing scores), cultural focus in coursework, cultural RESEARCH (if you know what you re into, visit these places and get to know the language), LORs, etc. Once you re in grad school A LOT of research and fieldwork Collaboration within/outside of anthropology since it is pertinent to many disciplines But once you re out in the real world Secure career prospects aren t so promising since academia positions are so competitive and scarce, especially in cultural anthropology The plight of the adjunct: lecturer--mostly teaching/less research Have a plan B to fall back on--such as other careers paths highlighted in this presentation! Bottom line: to teach/research cultural anthropology as a professor you need to show a lot of promise to hiring schools (luck helps too!)

11 Museum Studies/ Museology The field that encompasses the ideas and issues involved in the museum profession- from practical, day-to-day skills needed to operate a museum to theories on the societal role of museums. ~Smithsonian Institute Certificates: - Certificate of Museum Studies - Certificate of Public History - BA, MA, PhD - Careers - Museum Careers - Cultural Institutions - Heritage and Historic Sites - Private Sector

History + Anth joint study programs MA, PhD Historical Archaeology The study of the material remains of past societies that also left behind documentary and oral histories. 13 Anth + Journalism -Journalism Major at the U of U (works well as a double major) -Typical lines of work: newswriting and reporting - Journalism and anthropology both purport to observe and analyze human behavior and experience they both serve up their findings to the wider world in order to give it greater understanding of itself Combining the two could make for more 'holistic' and context-rich news storytelling. -B.A. or B.S. -Experience -Internships -Writing for blogs and local news sources -Daily Utah Chronicle -KUTE radio

14 Anth + Film and Media Focus on humanitarian documentaries and awareness -Documentary Studies minor at U of U -Film background and working knowledge of equipment -To get hired you need a B.A. or B.S. and lots of experience -Mostly starting with jobs volunteering on set, working as a production assistant, internships, etc. -Networking is extremely important

When telling someone s story it s important to understand where they re coming from culturally. -What draws me to this line of work is the opportunity for travel, hands on work, the chance to change lives and raise awareness

17 Business Businesses are independent cultures of their own and Anthropologists are needed to help these cultures survive together Opportunities for Anthropologists: - Distribution, Shipping and Logistics - Sales (retail and business clients) - Manufacturing - Government Jobs Requirements for Entry: - Experience - Degree (helpful but only necessary for specialized positions) - Most companies hire internally first Need for Anthropologists in a Corporate Environment: - International businesses need employees to bridge the cultural gap between their clients and their company
