1 2009 MASTER PLAN/PROGRESS REPORT Academic Program: Dietetic Internship Program Person Responsible: Debra Hollingsworth Date Submitted: May 14, 2009 Mission: The mission of the Dietetic Internship parallels that of the Department of Nutrition and Family Studies, the College of Science and the University. This mission of the Dietetic Internship is to prepare and train dietetic students to achieve the competency of entry-level dietitians and to meet the standards of excellence established by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association in the most individualized and comprehensive manner possible. The Department of Nutrition and Family Studies (NUFS) Dietetic Internship (DI) Program supports the university core value of academic excellence by developing a program that is viable, innovative, and relevant to market needs for registered dietitians. Institutional Mission Reference: The Dietetic Internship Program supports the university mission of: 1. Students cultivate skills for critical thinking and effective expression and gain an understanding of the global community. 2. Faculty commitment to excellence in research. 3. Encourage life long learning, ethical responsibility, and civic engagement. 3 Student Learning Outcome 1: Interns will complete the MS degree and develop into self-reliant, competent, entry-level professionals capable of functioning in a generalist practice. Expected Level of Achievement Actual Data From Assessment Actions/Decisions 80% of the DI graduates will successfully complete the registration examination on the first try. The pass rate of first time takers of the registration exam for the periods was 65 percent Revise planned experiences and course content. Initiate RD practice exams. Completion of exams in clinical, foodservice management and community rotations with a grade of 85% All interns (100 percent) passed their rotation exams with a score of 85 percent or better. Maintain rotation grades of 85% All interns (100 percent) passed their rotations with a score of 85% or better. Based on graduate and employer surveys, the graduates and employers rate the competency of the program graduates at three or above on a five-point scale. Both graduates and employers rate the competency of program graduates at three or above on a five-point scale. Program completion rate will be 90 % within a 5 year period Since program inception in 1994, 108 interns have completed the program; one intern did not, for a completion rate of 99%. 3
4 Student Learning Outcome 2: Prepare graduates who are able to practice in diverse, multidisciplinary settings. Expected Level of Achievement > 30% of graduates will be working in a variety of practice areas. > 80% or more of employers will rate graduates as adequate or very good in preparedness for an RD position. > 80% or more of graduate respondents will have found employment in the field of dietetics or related fields. > 80% or more of graduate respondents will have found the variety of experiences during the DI Program was about adequate. Actual Data From Assessment For the period , graduate surveys show that 52% of graduates are employed in clinical positions; 5% in foodservice management; 6 % in community dietetics; 3 % in education; 9% in sales; 9% in consulting; 2% in research,; 7% not working; 1% in Medical School; 1 in Nursing school; 1% in Recruiting and 4% are unknown. 100% of employers who completed the survey rate the preparedness of program graduates at three or above on a five-point scale. 83% of graduates have found employment in the field of dietetics or related fields. 100% of graduate respondents reported that the variety of experiences gained during the DI program was adequate. 5 Student Learning Outcome 3: Graduates will be employed as a registered dietitian within the state and local community. Expected Level of Achievement Actual Data From Assessment Actions/Decisions > 30% of program graduates will be employed in the five parish area of Southwest Louisiana 40% of program graduates gained employment in the five parish area of southwest Louisiana. > 50% of program graduates will be employed in Louisiana 66% of program graduates are employed in Louisiana 5
6 Resources Allocated: Funds were used to support faculty and interns to travel to Louisiana Dietetic Association Annual Meeting. Funds were used to support a project that the interns conducted in one of the elementary schools. Funds will be used to purchase a new laptop computer for the interns and program director to use for projects. 6
