2 Background History: On October 26, 2006 the University of North Texas System asked the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for permission to purchase two connected buildings in downtown Dallas (1901 Main Street and 1900 Elm Street). Purpose: Secure and grow UNT teaching opportunities Acquire long term administrative space for our growing UNT System Priorities: The THECB asked us to elevate one more goal to a high priority: Use the downtown Dallas location as an outreach center for the students in the Dallas Independent School District 2

11 UNT at the UCD UNT College of Visual Arts and Design (COVAD) The UCD is the centerpiece of the colleges current $14 million Capital Campaign seeking to install The Visual Art and Design Research Center (VADRC) at the UCD UCD houses the Texas Fashion Collection s: FASHIONONMAIN Upcoming exhibition: Michael Faircloth: Reflections, Fall 2007 Recent exhibition: Balenciaga and His Legacy, Spring 2007 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 112,686 jobs in the fashion apparel and accessory industries in the Dallas-Fort Worth region* UNT graduated 172 Fashion students last year (Fashion Merchandising, 135; Retail Management, 2; Fashion Design, 35) COVAD students benefit from the urban location of the UCD less than a mile from the Dallas Arts District 3 miles from the Dallas Market Center COVAD is offering Communication Design Studio for Fall 2007 * 11

13 College of Public Affairs and Community Service Offering a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) completion degree co-sponsored with Texas A&M Commerce UNT College of Education UNT at the UCD The College of Education and Dallas ISD are offering 4 Cohort study courses for Fall 2007 UNT System planned and current administrative uses: UNT System Chancellor s Dallas office location External Affairs Staff Website maintenance staff Legal Affairs Staff Facilities Staff 13
14 1900 Elm Street Building attached to the UCD (1901 Main Street) 95% average percentage leased (October 2006 to August 2007) Occupancy, revenues, and costs are better than budget in 2007 Marketed to UNT students, faculty, and staff and to all UCD partner universities: Benefits to students: Reduced application fee, administrative fee, and deposit Reduced parking rate 5% apartment rental discount Partial reimbursement/rental credit for text books Progress slow in turning 1900 Elm Street into a student residence As full degree programs at the UCD increase, it s believed that student rentals will increase at 1900 Elm Street. 14
