We provide services for job seekers résumé writing and skills training to help broaden employment options. Our campuses have up-to-date computer labs where Bow Valley learners can also access the wide range of online programs available at our Calgary campus and at other educational institutions. We give you the flexibility to update your skills or learn new skills in a timeframe that will suit your schedule. We offer courses and programs through self-paced study, online learning or class/workshops allowing you to work from one of our campuses or from your home or workplace. Whether it is upgrading your work skills, earning a certificate or taking a photography course for sheer pleasure, Bow Valley College Banff and Canmore campuses has a course that will fit your busy schedule, and suit your budget. PART-TIME: Our courses from six weeks* to four months include Continuing Education programs such as Computer Basics to help get you started, through the full Microsoft Office Suite programs to financial accounting, and business administration. These can be taken at any time with ongoing registration. Part-time certificate courses are also available and registration is ongoing. These include Word Processing, Accounting Applications, Business Computers, Administrative Assistant for Small Business, and Human Resources Certificate. FULL-TIME CAREER PROGRAMS: Our popular full-time Career Transition to Office Employment course runs twice per year (intakes are mid-october & mid- February) and includes a full-time classroom experience followed by a six-week work practicum with a local employer. Fully funded*, this is a fantastic employment preparation course for those who are unemployed, on EI or seasonally employed. Watch local press for information sessions dates and times. The Practical Nurse Diploma program is currently recruiting for its third intake at the Canmore campus. Starting in January the students receive instruction through a variety of methods such as online, video-conferencing, instructor-led lab workshops, and clinical practice in various health care settings. WORKSHOPS: From lunchtime mini workshops, to evening classes, on campus or off, each season we offer a variety of learning opportunities including courses on Use of Social Media, Customer Service, or Desktop Publishing. We can create a workshop for your business and staff and deliver it on your site or at our campus. Richard Berry, our local professional photographer who travels the world teaching photography courses, offers great value workshops, from a two-hour introduction to a week-long course including field trips and lectures. If you are interested in taking an online course but would like to enjoy a more traditional learning experience, you can use our facilities. If you are not sure whether online learning is right for you, come in and speak to one of our instructors who can support and guide you through the various technologies used. START NOW: START ANY TIME ongoing registration KEYBOARDING BEGINNER AND ADVANCED COMP 110/111 Cost: $95 each Hours: 4 months Banff/Canmore Campus computer lab study only This course is designed for learners who are brand new to keyboarding as well as learners who have basic skills but wish to increase their words per minute to a more functional level. Learn proper hand positioning and posture. Develop your skills and track speed and accuracy. Prerequisite Recommended: None - 20 wpm for Advanced COMPUTER BASICS CON 101 Cost: $225 Get comfortable with computers and the basic features of Microsoft Windows, the Internet and . Find out how to start programs, create, save and organize your files and use the online help feature. You ll also get an introduction to surfing the internet and setting up an account. This course is designed for those with little or no computer experience. It s our most popular course. THE ADVANCED INTERNET COURSE COST: $215 + GST This course is designed to give students a solid grounding in the history and function of the internet and then take them into the Web 2.0 world. Topics covered will include Podcasts, Wikis, Blogs, Social bookmarking, RSS, web resources, Mash-ups, and website design. START NOW: START ANY TIME ongoing registration WORD INTRODUCTION COMP 113 Cost: $225 Explore the basics of Microsoft Word to produce professional looking letters and documents. This course guides you through the effective use of the Word Ribbon Office Button and Quick Access Toolbar. You ll learn how to efficiently edit, move, and copy text; manipulate fonts; apply bullets and numbering; borders and shading; insert and re-size Clip Art; enter headers and footers; insert page numbers; set alignment and indents; and, change page settings. You ll learn to use the AutoCorrect feature and finish documents using the spelling, thesaurus and grammar features. Prerequisite recommended: Computer Basics or equivalent experience WORD INTERMEDIATE COMP 114 Cost: $225 Expand your knowledge of Microsoft Word. Learn how to turn a plain-looking document into one that looks professionally designed; use styles and themes, work with illustrations and SmartArt, draw and format shapes. Learn how to easily create and refine the look and layout of tables, and to generate and update a table of contents. Become skilled performing mail merge and working with templates. Prerequisite recommended: Word Introduction or equivalent experience WORD ADVANCED COMP 115 Cost: $225 This Microsoft Word course covers some of the more advanced features of the program. You ll learn: desktop publishing tools and techniques to produce professional looking newsletters, flyers, and brochures; how to collaborate on documents with ease through using tracked changes and comments; generating and building an index; creating bibliographies; using bookmarks; and more! Learn how to create and print worksheets, enter and edit data; work with basic formulas and functions, format numerical data as well as, create, edit and format worksheets. Prerequisite recommended: Computer Basics or equivalent experience EXCEL INTERMEDIATE COMP 117 Cost: $225 Build on the skills learned in Introduction to Excel. Learn how to manage range names, work with multiple worksheets by linking data, create advanced formulas, use the database and sorting features of Excel, and build on your knowledge of creating and formatting charts Prerequisite recommended: Excel, Introduction or equivalent experience EXCEL ADVANCED COMP 118 Cost: $225 In this advanced course learn about consolidating worksheets, setting data validation rules, using templates and analytical tools, including goal seeking and scenarios. Also covered are pivot tables and macros. Prerequisite recommended: Intermediate Excel or equivalent experience OUTLOOK CON 0082 Cost $225 Hours: 20 Canmore Campus Only Learn how to use the powerful communication and organizational capabilities of Microsoft Outlook. Upon completion of the course you ll be able to use basic and advanced features, the calendar, the contacts and the task list. Prerequisite recommended: Computer Basics POWERPOINT COMP 119 Cost: $225 Learn how to use PowerPoint to create professional looking visual presentations. PowerPoint enables you to organize a collection of images and text into a presentation and place it on slides, overheads or printed pages. Use templates, drawing tools, text boxes and Clip Art. Prerequisite recommended: Computer Basics and Word Introduction or equivalent experience ACCESS INTRODUCTION COMP 120 Cost: $225 Microsoft Access is a powerful database management system used for sorting, organizing and reporting various types of information. Access allows you to manipulate your data in a number of ways in the user-friendly Windows environment. Learn how to set-up functional databases, design attractive data entry forms, customize tables and produce meaningful reports. Prerequisite recommended: Excel Introduction and Word Intermediate or equivalent experience DESKTOP PUBLISHING USING PUBLISHER COMP 100 Cost: $225 Hours: 20 This course, using Publisher 2007, is designed to take students past the basics of design and into the theory of Desktop Publishing. Topics covered will include typography, advertising layout and design, colour management, logo design, copywriting, and pre- and post-press concepts. Prerequisite recommended: Computer Basics and Word Intermediate WORD PROCESSING CERTIFICATE The Word Processing Certificate incorporates computer skills essential for today s office environment. It demonstrates to employers that you are ready for a career in an office setting. In addition learn to complete bank reconciliations and handle petty-cash transactions. Prerequisite recommended: Basic Math Skills FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING - LEVEL 2 ACCT 102 COST: $265 + TEXTBOOK (SAME AS LEVEL 1) Hours: 40 In this course you will learn accounting for merchandise activities, payroll, special journal entries (cash receipts, cash payment, sales and purchase journals) and accounting for bad debts. Prerequisite recommended: Financial Accounting Level 1 or equivalent experience SIMPLY ACCOUNTING - LEVEL 1 ACCT 105 COST: $315 INCLUDING TEXT Hours: 30 The course will take the student systematically through recording and processing transactions in the General Ledger, the Accounts Receivable, the Accounts Payable, the Division, Payroll and the Inventory modules including setting up a company s books from scratch. Course includes a free student version of 2010 Simply Accounting software. Prerequisite recommended: Financial Accounting Level 1 and Computer Basics or equivalent experience SIMPLY ACCOUNTING - LEVEL 2 ACCT 106 COST: $245 + text ($109 + GST) Hours: 30 The course will take the student systematically through Month-End/Year End Processing, Year-End Closing, setting up Divisions, Banking, Correcting Transactions, using Multi-Currencies and Taxes. Course includes a free trial version of 2010 Simply Accounting software. Prerequisite recommended: Simply Accounting Level 1 or equivalent experience QUICKBOOKS PRO LEVEL 1 ACCT104 COST: $245 Hours: 24 This course covers the basics in working with an integrated accounting package suitable for most small to medium-sized businesses. Topics include setting up company files, working with lists, bank accounts, entering sales information, receiving payments and making deposits, entering and paying bills and doing payroll. Course includes free student version of Quickbooks 2010 accounting software. Prerequisite recommended: Financial Accounting Level 1 and Computer Basics or equivalent experience ACCOUNTING APPLICATIONS CERTIFICATE Learn how to handle the accounting requirements of a business or accounting environment. BASIC ADMINISTRATION SKILLS ADMIN 100 HOMESTUDY COST: $265 Hours: 40 Learn the skills most commonly used by administrative assistants in a small business environment. Learn proper telephone and reception procedures and etiquette, time and office management skills, business communications, and office machine operation. This course uses online resources, podcasts and video; students should be comfortable using these technologies and the internet. Prerequisite recommended: Computer Basics Business Computer Certificate Become an expert in business computer applications. This advanced-level certificate is an add on to our Word Processing Certificate and gives you advanced training in the most commonly used spreadsheet, database, and desktop publishing software and web design software. Prerequisite: Completion of Word Processing Certificate Required Courses: Administrative Assistant for Small Business Certificate This part-time certificate prepares you to work in a small business environment. It provides a range of office skills that cover the varied duties of administrative assistants in small businesses. The Practical Nurse Diploma Program educates you to enter one of the most highly respected and in demand careers in health care today. If you enjoy a challenge and have a desire to work in a dynamic environment a professional career in Practical Nursing is for you. The Practical Nurse Diploma Program is offered at the Canmore Campus in partnership with the Chinook Educational Consortium and Bow Valley College. The format of delivery is through video-conferencing, online and with instructor-led lab workshops at your local hospital as well as clinical practice in various health care settings. For intake date information, tuition fees and admission requirements call Inge Kovacs, Coordinator Practical Nurse Program This program gives you the skills and confidence to become an effective and skilled member of any office environment with training in computer applications, keyboarding, administrative procedures, and communications. The program includes a six-week non-paid work experience placement with a local employer. Start: two start dates each year, mid-october and mid- February. Later registrations may also be considered. Call or come into our office for more information and an application form to determine if you are eligible for this fully-funded program. *This is a fully-funded program, paid for by the Alberta Government, available to EI recipients and unemployed or underemployed Albertans. The certificate program focuses on a concrete blending of theory and practice to enable students to be prepared to plan developmentally appropriate activities and programs based on the ages, abilities and interest of the children in their care. Certificate graduates are eligible for Level 2 Child Care Worker Certification with Alberta Children s Services. Funding for these services is provided through Alberta Employment and Immigration (AEI) and is available to you if you are unemployed, or on EI, or even if you are employed and need to upgrade your skills. RÉSUMÉ PRODUCTION AND JOB SEARCH SERVICES Our computer labs in Banff and Canmore are available for use to produce résumés and cover letters. We will give you the assistance required to create a résumé you are proud of. You may also use our computer labs for Internet job searches. You may drop in at any time once you have registered. French translation is also available. SKILLS UPGRADING - COMPUTER AND/OR BOOKKEEPING Six-weeks of part-time training is available to you, in computer applications and accounting applications, once your application has been approved (approval takes a few days). Call or to find out if you are eligible for this no-cost training. COMPUTER SKILLS MAINTENANCE PART TIME If you are unemployed you may also use our Drop-In Computer Labs in Banff and Canmore to maintain your current computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Simply Accounting or QuickBooks. You may drop in at any time, over a six week period, once your application has been approved. EMPLOYER SERVICES SKILLS TRAINING FOR EMPLOYEES Customised and off the shelf training workshops and tutorials are available for businesses and their employees. Whether you are making the transition from Microsoft Office 2003 to 2007, or need all your staff to be proficient in the use of Excel spreadsheets, our instructors can design and deliver a course for you. Alternately, you can rent our fully equipped computer lab with 15 desktops and Smart Board technology to deliver your own in-house training. Or if you are from out of town, consider combining a few days in the mountains with professional development training for your staff. These courses allow you to study at your own pace from your home, overseas, while working or travelling, or wherever you happen to be. All required course examinations must be written at a Bow Valley College campus or at an approved alternate location. With the online option, instructors and tutors provide support through telephone, , and other online support features (your instructor will not be in Canmore/Banff). Online courses include course guides, online practice tests, hand-outs and additional resources to help you succeed. A course calendar helps you pace yourself through the course. You may proceed as quickly as you are able. The Homestudy option provides you with all course materials in print form. Instructors and tutors provide support through telephone and . These exams are written over a two-day period: Friday evening and all day Saturday at North (main) Campus in Calgary. Exams must be taken in Calgary. 14 CAMPUS GUIDE 2011 ONLINE COURSES Many colleges and universities now offer courses and even full degrees, certificates and diplomas through online learning, or a combination of online and traditional distance learning. Not sure whether online learning is for you? Come in to our campus and speak with one of our instructors. They can give you a snapshot of the online learning tools, answer questions and show you around our computer lab. If you are not confident that you have the necessary computer skills to manage online learning then we can help get you started. We can give you an assessment and then if necessary set you up in our easy to follow Computer Basics module. Instead of sitting alone at home come learn with others in our computer lab where at any given time you could be side by side with a Licensed Practical Nurse or an Accounting Certificate Student. And remember you do not have to be taking a Bow Valley College course to use our campus facilities. The Community Learning Centre, which is operated by Bow Valley College, offers a variety of services for post-secondary students residing in the Bow Valley. These services are available at no cost: A learning environment, with other students, away from the distractions of daily living Use of our computer labs Access to video and audio conferencing Exam rooms and invigilation (fee $55) Our Calgary Campus offers a variety of courses delivered online. This is a part-time certificate and will take a minimum of two years to complete. There are a total of 13 required courses. EVENTS MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE Learn how to put on a good show, from planning to marketing to fundraising, and from media relations budgeting to accounting. This two year part-time certificate can be completed fully online. There are a total of 13 required courses. HOSPITAL UNIT CLERK CERTIFICATE Learn about basic human needs, hospital organization, medical terminology, processing medical orders, communication skills, and telephone and reception activities. The certificate program has an intake every Fall semester, and takes four semesters to complete all requirements on a part-time basis. INTERIOR DECORATING & MERCHANDISING CERTIFICATE Decorate a new home or office or redecorate an existing one with style and confidence. Get the skills you need for an exciting career in interior decorating and merchandising. This part-time program will provide you with the practical skills and abilities you need to successfully manage interior decorating projects. Learn how to work effectively in a business environment in a variety of roles associated with interior decorating. There are a total of 13 required courses. Students will benefit from the assistance of an online facilitator. The program ends with a four-week practicum and students can expect to complete this certificate in just over two years. 19 BOW VALLEY COLLEGE IBC How to Register You can register for continuing education courses if you are 18 years of age or older. You do not need a high school diploma. You may register by phone or in person at our Canmore or Banff Campus. REGISTRATION IS ONGOING Most of our campus courses are self-paced, which means you can start at any time and have the flexibility to work on them to suit your schedule and location, or complete them through home study. Instructors guide and support you through the course by tutorials, and phone. You may use our campus computer labs during the day and some evenings. Call for more information or REGISTER BY PHONE OR IN PERSON You may register by calling our main office in Canmore at or by dropping by our Canmore Campus in the Canmore Provincial Building. Our Banff Campus is located in the Banff YWCA and can be reached at Cancellation policy: Once your course has begun, no refunds or credits will be given. Compassionate grounds may be considered with official documentation. CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING Bow Valley College has a formal system to recognize prior training and life experience. This means you do not have to repeat course material that you already know. COURSE FEES Fees must be paid in full when registering. Tuition fees may be paid by VISA, MasterCard, cash or certified cheque. Course fees are shown with the course description. FINANCIAL SUPPORT If you are on a low income, financial assistance to cover the cost of a course is available to eligible part-time students. Unemployed? Need skills upgrading?
