1 THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO College of Education Educational Psychology & Special Services Counselor Education COURSE SYLLABUS EDPC 5371 Counseling Practicum Spring 2010 Note: Syllabus is subject to change Dr. Don C. Combs, Associate Professor Office: ED 708 Office Phone: Office Hours: M, T, W, R (3-5 PM) and by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION ` Advanced training in the development of basic counseling skills and interventions in an on or off-campus setting. Students are required to complete 100 clock hours, to include 40 clock hours of direct service to clients and is to be taken during last semester of formal course work immediately preceding enrollment in EDPC COURSE OBJECTIVES / STUDENT COMPETENCIES 1. To continue to identify and understand the importance of the core conditions in establishing effective communication with clients in the counseling process. 2. To identify the major counseling theories responsible for those skills, techniques, and approaches listed in #3 and #4 below. To demonstrate significant integration of the eight major counseling skill clusters: listening, paraphrasing, reflection of feelings, summarizing, focusing, confronting, reflection of meaning, and informing TExES School Counselor Domain II, and To demonstrate effective use of Gestalt therapy (empty chair, hot seat, et. al.) and cognitive/behavioral therapies (cognitive restructuring, relaxation, desensitization, et. al.). Text Readings and Assignments - Refer to the Course Calendar for required reading assignments for each class session. 2. Class Attendance - As indicated in the Graduate Catalog, attendance is required at all class sessions and is considered crucial in order to gain maximum benefit from the course. If you are absent, the other member of your triad will not be able to complete their assignment for the day without making special arrangements to meet you before the next class session. Please discuss any absence with the professor as soon as possible. Even one unexcused absence may result in the student being dropped from the course. An unexcused absence also applies to missing a scheduled practice session with your triad. This course should be your first and foremost priority each Monday evening. Please turn off cellular phones during class and during scheduled practice sessions. 3. Participation in Counseling Laboratory Training Experiences - Students will be grouped into triads and will participate in counselor training experiences throughout the term. Students will stay in the same triad all term. Outside class time will be EDPC 5371 Page 2 of 7 1/25/2010

3 required to complete the required laboratory practice sessions. Please make special note that ALL SESSIONS WILL BE RECORDED AND SOME WILL BE SUBMITTED AND WILL BECOME A PART OF THE STUDENT S PERMANENT PRACTICUM FILE. Students are asked to present a real issue or concern when playing the client role as this lends a greater sense of credibility to the sessions. Confidentiality during practice sessions is valued at all costs and will be strictly enforced and maintained unless a student poses a danger to self or others at which time the professor will take appropriate action as deemed important and necessary to protect all parties involved. Additionally, any significant indicators of the following: Substance use or abuse, Evidence of a significant mental disorder, AND/OR Discriminatory behavior related to racial, ethnic, gender, age, or sexual orientation issues which may impair the student's ability to function effectively as a counselor will be directly addressed by the professor in a discussion with the student. After considering all options and alternatives and also consulting with other counseling professors, a decision will be made as to an appropriate course of action to assist the student, to include a determination regarding the student's continued progress in the course and possibly the program. This procedure complies with the Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association (2005) which requires that counselor educators, as supervisors are aware of the limitations of supervisees (students) that might impede performance (F.5.b.) and that they assist supervisees (students) in securing remedial assistance when needed (F.5.b.) and to recommend dismissal from training programs when those supervisees (students) are unable to provide competent professional services (F.5.b.) All students enrolled in this course MUST adhere at all times to the 2005 American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. 4. Integration of Basic Skills Recording and Narrative A DVD recording of a counseling session demonstrating basic counseling skills will be submitted for evaluation and a transcription narrative of part of the recording will be submitted electronically. The recording will demonstrate the effective use of the following: The core conditions (empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence) and The major counseling skill clusters (listening, paraphrasing, reflection of feelings, summarizing, focusing, confronting, reflection of meaning, and informing). The specific format to be used for this assignment is attached and will be explained in greater detail in class. Due date is Feb 22 nd. 5. Additional Recordings of Various Theoretical Approaches - Several additional DVD recordings will be submitted which will demonstrate the student s ability to use intervention techniques from various other theoretical approaches and emphases, EDPC 5371 Page 3 of 7 1/25/2010

4 primarily the Gestalt and Cognitive/Behavioral approaches. A written narrative is to be submitted with each videotape. The specific formats to be used for these assignments are attached and will be explained in greater detail in class. Due dates are Mar 29 th, Apr 19 th, and May 10 th. 6. Journal Article Reviews - You are asked to read two (2) journal articles in the professional counseling literature which have a specific focus on the efficacy (effectiveness) of counseling. The titles of these articles are as follows: 1. Leibert, T.W. (2006). Making change visible: The possibilities in assessing mental health counseling outcomes. Journal of Counseling and Development, (84), Lambert, M.J. & Cattani-Thompson, K. (1996). Current findings regarding the effectiveness of counseling: Implications for practice. Journal of Counseling and Development, (74), You will be given a copy of both articles. The format to be used in reviewing these articles will be provided in class. Due date is Apr 26 th. EVALUATION This course will be graded according to the S/U (pass/fail) option. All Course Requirements must be successfully completed in order to earn a grade of "S. To receive a grade of S, DVD recordings and narratives must demonstrate a significant degree of proficiency in (1) responding promptly and accurately to client feelings, thoughts, and behaviors and (2) effectively using the intervention techniques of the various theoretical approaches studied in class. The professor reserves the right to require additional DVD recordings and/or narrative evaluations if a student's progress appears marginal or in jeopardy. The professor will advise the student if at any time he determines that adequate progress is not occurring and remedial work seems necessary. Additionally, the checklist entitled "Evaluation of Therapist Performance: Short Form" which is attached to this syllabus will be completed by the professor on each student at the end of the course. The student must attain an overall (averaged) rating on this evaluation of at least 5 for a grade of S. Please submit all required assignments on time and do not hesitate to contact the professor if you are in doubt as to your progress at any point during the semester. Late work will not be accepted unless previously approved by the professor (e.g., the request must be made before the assignment is due). This is a firm requirement. NOTE: 1. Students with Disabilities: If you have or believe you have a disability, you may wish to self-identify. 5 as disabled must reactivate their standing with the Office of Disabled Student Services on a yearly basis. Failure to report to this office will place a student on the inactive list and nullify benefits received from being on the active list of disabled students. Plagiarism (passing off the work of another as one's own without giving proper credit to the original source of the information) is considered scholastic dishonesty at this university and must be reported to the Dean of Students.
