1 The Challenger Programme, Y10- Y11: October March 2016 All lessons are on Tuesdays from 14:15-15:30 in Classroom D th October: Lesson by Yarona van der Horst on Choose the life you want. Sometimes the hardest part of decision- making is being aware that there's a decision to be made in the first place. "Choose the Life You Want" shows us how we can view our lives as a series of choices. Tal Ben- Shahar advocates a proactive approach to well- being in which every moment offers opportunities for positive changes in our lives. He promises no simple trick or secret, no quick- fix for instant improvement. Instead, he proposes being continuously mindful of the power we hold to choose our courses of action at every moment of our lives. 27 th October: Lesson by Snježana Bokulić on Refugees, go home - they would if they could. We will discuss who the refugees are, how one becomes a refugee and how the international community has dealt with refugees historically. Particular emphasis will be placed on explaining and sensitising students to the current situation in Europe. The lesson will rely on interactive methods and student participation. Ms. Bokulić is a human rights lawyer who has worked for more than 17 years on human rights, development and security across four continents. She has worked with government officials, law enforcement officers, national human rights institutions, non- governmental organisations and minority communities to advance the respect for human rights in many countries. To this end, she has developed and delivered training workshops, designed advocacy campaigns and identified strategic human rights litigation opportunities, She is former Head of the Human Rights Department of Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Co- operation in Europe (OSCE), and former Director of Programmes at Minority Rights Group International. 3 rd November: Study trip to DHL, Schiphol on Welcome in the Wonderful World of Logistics. We meet on the Plaza at 11:05 (we leave school at 11:10) and will be back to ISH at 16:00hr. 10 th November: Lesson by Hannelike Roza on Party Food All Year Around. The lesson will be in The Hungry Mind. We meet on the Plaza at 14:05 and go together (14:10) to THM. The lesson will end at 15:45. Hannelike Roza is a qualified English and Food Technology teacher. She had taught both subjects at several secondary schools in The Netherlands for a number of years before starting her Expat life in She lived in Belgium, U.S.A Switzerland and Vienna, Austria. All throughout those years abroad she used her teaching skills off and on. In the U.S. Hannelike taught English at a Literacy Center and at the International School of Schaffhausen in Switzerland she worked as an English and ESL teacher. Passionate about food and inspired by all these nationalities around her, Hannelike volunteered in baking and cooking at school events whenever she could and wherever the family lived at that 1

2 moment. She is currently teaching the Creative Cookery Classes for primary children at The Hungry Mind. 1 st December: Lesson by Katherine Fortier on Stress and Coping. What "stresses you out? Homework? Exams? Arguments? Educational psychologist Katherine Fortier will talk about the nature of stress, how it works, and what to do about it. From the neuroscience of the brain- body response, to practical things you can do to reduce stress in your own life, this will be a lesson that aims to help you understand yourself better, and cope better. Katherine Fortier is a Child and Educational Psychologist in private practice in The Hague. She serves as a psycho- educational consultant to the HCO (Haagse Centrum voor Onderwijsbegeleiding) and is busy in many international schools in and around The Hague. She also sees kids and teen- agers for counselling and psychotherapy at her offices in the Archipel practice. Katherine obtained her BA (Hon) from St Mary s University in Psychology and Masters of Applied Science in Child and Educational Psychology from the University in Waterloo. 8 th December: no Challenger lesson. Students work on their personal Challenger project at home. 15 th December: Lesson by Jurriën van der Horst on The European Union. What goes on behind the scenes in the EU and the United Nations? What happens when Prime Ministers meet in Brussels to discuss world affairs? What is it like to work in a country like China or to negotiate in Japan? What does it mean to be a diplomat or an ambassador, and how could you become one? In the lesson, you will learn about the functioning of the European Union. We will discuss how the EU is affecting our daily lives, what are elements the EU should focus on, or which problems should be tackled by the EU. Mr. van der Horst studied Business Administration. He started his career with an Investment Firm. In 2003, he joined the Diplomatic Service of the Netherlands. Mr van der Horst worked at the Economic Section of The Dutch Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel. After postings in The Hague and Japan, He has been responsible for Economic Cooperation with China. Currently, He works as a policy coordinator in the Europe Department at The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 5 th January: Lesson by Volker on what is my drive? How do I know it? Have you already thought about what would like to do after school, your future studies, or your profession? Have you already experience with work, maybe through a summer job or an internship? There is still time, and school gives you also very valuable help to orientate, but it is never too early to think about it. Today, when employers select candidates for vacant jobs they look for much more 2

3 Than people with the right technical skills, they look for people with engagement and drive for the job, people with good social interaction, energised and organised for today s working life. But how can you find out what drives you, what makes you engaged? Your day- to- day life today tells a lot about this. In an interactive session with some examples we will explore this further. Knowing your drivers is one thing talking about it another. When in future looking for a job social media plays an important role to market yourself. We will have a look at the professional platform LinkedIn. Volker Dohne graduated with a Magister Artium after studying Political Science in Germany and Switzerland. More than 20 years ago he joined the profession of Human Resources, a long time with a strong focus on electronic media in Human Resources. He worked as author and project manager for e- Learning programs, was innovator in the field of internet based recruitment, brought in 1996 the first Internet Job- board in Switzerland on- line, and founded a company which developed internet based recruitment solutions. Since 2002 he works for the European Patent Office. Today he is as recruiter in charge of recruiting engineers, scientists and IT specialists for the branch in Rijswijk. 12 th January: Lesson by Dr. Camelia Constantinescu on The Miracles of Human Language. In this session, she will share with you some of the miracles of human language that have fascinated her. Everybody uses language everywhere in the world every day. There is no community, no matter how small or how remote, where language is not employed. Language seems to be inextricably linked to human nature and to define humans. But what is it that we know when we know a language? Is there something we are already born with that specifically helps us to acquire language? Is it ever too late to start learning a language? Does the brain of a person who speaks one language differ from that of a person who speaks more than one language? Is there anything universal that all languages share despite their seeming diversity? Dr. Camelia Constantinescu studied English and French language and literature and applied linguistics at the University of Bucharest (Romania) and Ca Foscari University of Venice (Italy) and she completed her PhD in theoretical linguistics (syntax, semantics and the interface between syntax and semantics) at Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (The Netherlands). She has worked as a researcher and lecturer in linguistics at the University of Bucharest, Leiden University and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and is currently a teacher and subject coordinator for English Language Acquisition and Theory of Knowledge as well as for the FlourISH programme for Years at The International School of The Hague. 26 th January: THIMUN. 4 2nd February: Lesson by Dr. Miriam Marchon on False Alarm Immune system and Allergies. What causes allergies? How do allergies evolve? How to prevent a false alarm? In the lesson we will talk about the purpose of the immune system. The immune system is a complex network to keep infectious microorganism out of the body. It destroys them and protects the body from infections and damages. An allergy is a false alarm which triggers the immune system to react to an inappropriate target. Dr. Miriam Marchon works as medical doctor since more than 20years with specialization in internal medicine and lung diseases but her special interest is in sports medicine. She lived in Germany and Czech republic before she moved to The Hague. She participated in several marathon and triathlon competitions, played handball in a school team and loves also skiing and snow bording. 9 th February: Lesson by Simone Bennett on Filming What makes a great film? How do I become a filmmaker? What do I need to have to make a film? And where do I start... You don t need expensive tools to make great films, all you need is just a group of friends and a great idea. Simone Bennett is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Amsterdam. She makes films, music videos and works with photography. After graduating from the audio- visual art department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, she worked as a filmmaker in Berlin for several years. Simone met director of photography Lonneke Worm on a film course when she was 13 and they have continued making films together ever since. Simone's work is distributed by the EYE Film museum and is shown internationally. 16 th February: Lesson by Mrs. Van der Horst: High tea and Student s presentations. We are honoured to have these lecturers who agreed to come to ISH and to share their knowledge and experience with our students. The programme can still be subject to minor changes.
