5 Dr. Jumpei Ueda, Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies & Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, Japan 11:30 New Light Sources Based on Luminescent Nanomaterials Luminescent nanomaterials can be classified into four classes; doped nanomaterials, semiconductor type quantum dots (Q dots) and carbon dots (C dots), metal nanoclusters and semiconducting polymer nanoparticles. Core shell nanostructures materials are found to be efficient for various applications. The study of nanoscale matter radiation interactions offers numerous opportunities for both fundamental research and technological applications in photonics and biophotonics. From the fundamental point of view, the physical understanding of emission (up and down conversion) of rare earth ions in oxide/semiconducting nanoparticles and the way it changes with size, crystal phase and concentration is very important. The understanding of excited state dynamics of photo excited quantum dots is essential for technological applications such as efficient solar energy conversion, light emitting diodes, photovoltaic cells and so on. Here, our emphasis is directed to describe the influence of size, shape and composition of quantum dot on their different relaxation processes, i.e. radiative relaxation rate, nonradiative relaxation rate and number of trap states. We will discuss about the photophysical properties of new generation luminescent nanoparticles i.e. metal cluster and carbon dots Finally, we will discuss dye/porphyrin doped semiconducting polymer nanoparticles for future applications.
