Travel report for the exchange at Manchester Business School, University of Manchester Spring 2014 Student number: This report tells my experience as an exchange student at Manchester Business School (MBS), which is a part of the University of Manchester. The first part will focus on the preparation process for the exchange (after being admitted), the second on the exchange studies there, the third on the living experience and finally I will make some general comments. 1. Preparing for the exchange As exchange students are expected to complete at least one semester at the partner university (which, in the UK, is around 5 months time), you will need a student visa to study in the UK. There are two types of student visa: student visitor and Tier-4. The former allows you a 6-month stay in the country without any kind of paid work; it also cannot be extended. I chose this type of visa, since the fee is much lower and the applying process is less complicated. However, you should choose the Tier-4 visa if you intend to work while studying there (possibly finding some internships) and want to extend your stay after completing the semester at MBS. For the student visitor visa, the documents you will need include: - Valid passport and travel documents - One passport-sized photograph - A photocopy of Finnish residence permit (if you are not Finnish) - Aalto enrolment confirmation (you can easily get this at the Study Office) - Travel reservations - Acceptance letter from MBS For the Tier-4, you will need all of the above, plus a few other documents listed below: - Bank statements (or other types of financial assurances)

- English certificate: IELTS or TOEFL (if English is not your first language) - A permission document from MBS (provided by the school via if asked) After filling in the application form and send the necessary documents online, you will have to book an appointment at the UK Embassy office for them to collect the hard copy of the documents and get your biometric information (face capture and fingerprints). There are two options: you can choose the clinic in Helsinki for this step or you can travel to the UK Embassy in Sweden. The former is quick and simple but you have to pay an extra fee of around 180. The latter is more of a hassle since you have to travel to Stockholm, but you do not have to pay anything. In my case, I found a very cheap ferry ticket to Stockholm so I made it a short holiday. The office is just around 2km from the port. Once you have your face captured and fingerprints collected, you will have to hand in all of the above documents in hard paper (some types need two copies), including your passport, so you need to prepare another form of identification for the return trip. The whole applying process takes approximately 15 working days (or 3 weeks), so I d suggest you start applying around 5 weeks before departure. You can apply sooner, but in that case you might have to leave UK early and lose the chance to travel the country. Just note that your stay starts approximately 3 weeks after your appointment at the embassy. Around 2 months before the new semester, MBS will send a pre-arrival information package both via and post. You will need the official acceptance letter from this package for your visa application. Also, there will be an instruction on how to register for the courses offered at MBS. You will have to fill in a course choice paper, get it approved by the Exchange Office at Aalto and post it back to MBS together with a photocopy of your passport. After that, you will have to make an IT sign-up and registration, fill in some personal information and provide your photograph so that they can issue you a student ID once you arrive at the campus. MBS will also allow you to request a university accommodation, which I strongly recommend, although the price is quite steep compared to Finland: the cheapest option is 400 a month. The residence halls are in walking distance to the school buildings, so you can save the transport expense. In addition, the process might not be as shady as when you rent a private apartment like I did. I stayed in a 300-a-month apartment but bills were not included, the

facilities were bad (with no internet!) and I also had to buy a travel card. As a result, I really think you should take the accommodation offer from MBS. It is easy to fly to Manchester. Finnair has a direct route, but you can also opt for a cheaper flight with Norwegian Airline although you will have to transit in some city. MBS will have a pickup service in the fall semester but not the spring semester. Going to the centre from the airport is also simple, as there are direct trains which cost only 2 for a single trip. From there, if you have a lot of luggage, you might want to hail a cab to the residence halls, as they are a few kilometres away from the centre. Otherwise, there are a lot of buses to take. MBS will have detailed maps and instructions in their info package to assist you in this part. 2. Exchange studies Upon arrival, there is an orientation session in which the representatives from MBS will introduce you to the campus and note the difference in teaching and studying. You will be assigned a student mentor, who will help you out with personal problems and get you accustomed to the new life. The staff is very friendly and eager to offer you advices on various problems you might encounter. Furthermore, you will have a free city couch tour in which you will have a brief overview of Manchester and Salford. The MBS International Society also holds some welcoming events for exchange students. Overall, I think the reception at MBS was very good. Nordea cards work in the UK, but you might want to open a bank account for your time there. To do this, you will need a sponsor letter from MBS which you can collect at the study office. There are many banks here; I d suggest Barclays since my experience with them was very smooth and hassle-free. The semester starts later than in Finland: for the spring semester, it starts in the beginning of February and ends around in the middle of June. The courses run in weeks from February to the first week of April and basically finish then. After that, you will have a long Easter holiday (usually 3 weeks) and then you will only have a few revision sessions as well as assignment deadlines. In other words, all the time after Easter is for exam revision and deadlines; no new lecture is held. The examination period starts in the middle of May and lasts till mid-june. There are a few differences in studying in UK compared to Finland. First, a course consists of lectures

and seminars, and the latter is compulsory; missing more than 2 of them may result in failing the course. Second, exams here only last 2 hours with the same (or even more) amount of questions need answering (usually 2 essays). As a result, you might need to think and write non-stop but possibly still cannot finish it in time if you are used to the 4-hour system in Finland. However, you can plan strategically before taking the exam, since the lecturers will provide a list of topics to be covered in the exams. Still, it was not a pleasant experience for me. Since MBS is basically a business school, there are only business-related courses offered in various fields: finance, HR, management, etc. in 3 levels: first year, second year and third year, with the difficulty going up respectively. There are language courses but they are not included in your study credits. You cannot take graduate courses. You can choose freely the courses you want to take, but the school does not allow taking 2 courses that overlap each other in either lecture or seminar schedule, so you will have to find the best possible combination. If you need 30 ECTS for the exchange, you will have to take at least 6 courses at MBS. There is also no compulsory programme to follow. 3. Course description In this part I will detail the courses I took for the spring semester. Human Resource Management Course code: BMAN30042 Level: Undergraduate, 3 rd year Lecturer: Anne McBride Assessment: 2-hour examination (100%) Content of the course: This module provides a range of theories related to managing human resources in the corporate environment. It explains the changing nature of HR in the UK, with the specific focus on HR in the service sector, recruitment and selection, HR development, employee involvement, pay and reward, work-life balance and diversity vs. equality.

In my opinion this course is quite interesting in some parts, especially HR in the service sector and pay/reward section. Some others are quite boring, though. If you are truly fascinated about the human factor in the company, you will enjoy this course, since it provides a lot of real-life cases every week for students to discuss in the seminar. For me, the theories are a bit heavy, especially when you have to memorise a lot of them (together with the authors names and the year of their researches!) for the exam. I d not suggest this course if you enjoy working with numbers rather than with words. Influence and Change in Organisations Course code: BMAN20352 Level: Undergraduate, 2 nd year Lecturer: Sharon Clarke Assessment: 2-hour examination (100%) or portfolio (50%) + examination (50%) Expected learning hours: 100 hours Content of the course: This module provides students with some basic knowledge of work psychology relevant to managerial and organisational change in the workplace. It introduces basic theory on leadership, creativity and managing resistance to changes. It can be said that this module is an extended version of the Introduction to Management course at Aalto BIZ. It offers some new exciting perspectives on organisation change, especially the psychology behind human reaction to changes. However, it is still a theory-heavy course with a non-stop-writing examination. Again, only take this course if you are comfortable with writing multiple word essays during the time. Leadership in Action Course code: UCOL20022 Level: Undergraduate Lecturer: Anne McBride Assessment: eposter group work (50%), online discussion (40%) and quiz (10%)

Content of the course: This module offers a lot of theories about leadership, from the traits theory to the recent creative leadership. The most interesting part is that in each lecture, a new speaker is invited and they will share their personal stories on leadership. After that, you will have to do some research on the topic in each lecture and write a short essay on the learning forum as well as interact with other students and ask questions. This discussion is a part of the unit assessment. You will also have to work in a group and make an eposter, basically a 10-slide PowerPoint on a specific wicked problem. Your group will need to do a lot of research, explore the causes of the problems, the leaders that are working to counteract them as well as your evaluation of their actions. In my opinion this is the best course I have taken at MBS. Not only did I get the chance to listen to some inspiring stories from people fascinated about their works, I also worked closely with some British friends and learnt more about their working styles. Furthermore, this course allows you a lot of opportunities for volunteering throughout the semester, and it is also a compulsory part of the module. The volunteering is really interesting, from working in a film club to planting trees, and they truly enriched my experience of the UK. I d highly recommend this course to everyone. Decision Analysis for Business and Management Course code: BMAN31152 Level: Undergraduate, 3 rd year Lecturer: Jian-Bo Yang Assessment: 2-hour examination (70%) + coursework (30%) Content of the course: This module introduces the concepts and methods to support better operational, tactical and strategic decision making in the business world. It focuses on various decision making processes: decision trees, utility, multiple criteria decision making, game theory and Markov chains. It is a quite useful course since it gives a lot of real-life exercises that these

theories can be applied. The content is heavy with numbers, the maths are not easy. The coursework is a complicated task since you have to make a very thorough report on a multiple criteria decision making problem, using every method taught and some extra analysis if you want a higher than average mark. The examination is not difficult and follows a same format every year, although the time limit may prove to be a problem. Investment Economics and Innovation Course code: BMAN31212 Level: Undergraduate, 3 rd year Lecturer: Hugh Cameron Assessment: 2500-word project report (100%) Content of the course: This module introduces the financial appraisal methods you will need when you make the business plan for a new start-up. You will learn how to set up an investment model, using popular indicators such as NPV, IRR, payback etc. to evaluate a business project. In this course you will have the opportunity to think of a business idea, make the investment plan for it and evaluate your own business in a report, building an investment model with Excel. This is a difficult module: you will have to make a lot of research on the market like you would actually do when you create a new company: the market potential, the costs, the revenues, the products etc. All of them need to be real data and referenced, so this report might take a lot of time to complete. The upside is that this course finishes very early, before Easter. For me, this course was a fascinating but difficult experience; I was free to explore and try everything I want but it is not easy to get a high mark out of this coursework. Managing Fairness at Work Course code: BMAN31652 Level: Undergraduate, 2 nd year Lecturer: Helge Hoel

Assessment: 2-hour examination (100%) Content of the course: This module aims to give a basic understanding of the various problems related to employee fairness in the workplace: bullying, stress, sexual harassment, equality etc. It explores the causes and effects of these fairness problems and attempts to give an overview on possible solutions. You will have the opportunity to discuss on some real-life cases with other students in the seminar. This course, for me, provides a general understanding of various common problems and shines a light on possible ways to counter them. It might not be very interesting but fairly useful when you actually work in a company. 4. Free time and other information Living in Manchester is relatively cheaper than in London. Accommodation is much more expensive than Finland, but I found home-cooked food to be cheaper. Other products are usually more expensive, but in the UK you have Amazon and ebay for bargain seekers, and it is highly possible that you can strike a good deal. Transportation is good; it costs 125 for a Stagecoach bus card for the whole semester (there are many other bus companies here but Stagecoach is the most popular). Overall, the monthly expense is around 600 or more depending on your spending habits. Travelling by rail through the UK is cheap and convenient; I d highly recommend buying a Youth rail card if you intend to travel a lot, since it offers a 33% discount on every journey. I d suggest taking your time to visit the beautiful sceneries and the historical sites throughout the UK. Also, leave at least 1 week to explore London; the city is huge and full with interesting attractions. Because the courses run for 10 weeks, you usually have one seminar and one lecture every week for 6 courses, so you have a lot of free time. There are many student clubs and societies to join, and they are really friendly to foreigners. The local weather is really bad with rain and fog most of the time (though it gets better in the summer). The continuous rain and high humidity feels cold and irritating sometimes. 5. Final comments

I would recommend MBS to other students since it offers a good variety of business courses and the chance to visit one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The people are really friendly (their accent is amazing!) and the teaching quality is good. This is also a perfect city for football fans to have an amazing experience. I got to see two matches live at Old Trafford and the atmosphere there was phenomenal. During the exchange I learnt a lot of interesting things about the British culture, how people call one another mate, how they say cheers all the time. I also got to visit many cities and learnt a lot about the exciting British history. This exchange was a truly eye-opening (and expensive) experience for me. I really recommend MBS as an academic institution and UK as a country for students going on exchange; I am sure you will have one of the best moments in your life there.
