1 Accounting System and Internal Reporting Manager The Position Based in Calgary, the Accounting System and Internal Reporting Manager will report to the Controller, and will work closely with the Controller and the Finance team to provide internal reporting and data analysis support for Finance, Marketing and all business units of Niska Gas Storage. S/he will develop, implement and maintain a system of internal financial reporting and related processes to ensure that operational and financial data, for internal purposes, is effectively and efficiently created, organized, summarized and delivered in a timely and accurate fashion. Overall Responsibilities The Accounting System and Internal Reporting Manager is responsible for the production of timely, accurate and reliable internal financial reporting that is prepared in compliance with Niska s financial policies and US GAAP. This individual will be the primary Finance team resource for the implementation and on going support for a new accounting system. S/he will oversee the following: Advice and assistance to senior management in developing key performance indicators ( KPIs ) that accurately reflect and provide insight into Niska s operating and financial performance. Evaluate Niska s existing and potential information systems and recommend best practices to efficiently and effectively provide management information. Niska s implementation of the financial aspects of technology solutions to management information systems. Serve as the primary point of contact and super user in the new system who is fully accountable for the accuracy and integrity of all data in the Company s general ledger. Integrity of the Niska s general ledger and production activities related to Niska s monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close.
2 Creation of data to be included in any front-end information systems (i.e. data warehouses, executive information systems, etc). Creation of monthly and quarterly internal management information packages. Advice to senior management on the appropriate content and timing of such packages. Analyses which support management decision making on an ongoing and ad-hoc basis. Detailed Responsibilities Include: Lead the design and implementation of an accounting system to best fit Niska s reporting and day to day business information needs, as overseen by the Director of Information Technology; Reporting and data analysis support for Finance, Marketing and all business units of Niska Gas Storage. Regular and ad hoc analysis to assist in: preparation of financial statements, business drivers for firm and short-term gas storage as well as optimization, capital projects, marketing and pricing decisions, pricing decisions and cost optimization. Create, implement and maintain standardized internal and external reporting systems, including design and maintain a chart of accounts and recommend accounting process flows that fit Niska s business; Assist in the Investigation, facilitiation and implemention of new reporting technologies in general and specifically related to information technology aspects of K-1 reporting, corporate income and excise tax reporting and treasury system add-ons. Act as business owner for reporting and data modeling. Support ad hoc and strategic training and reporting needs as necessary. Review, assess, and potentially upgrade current processes and procedures to ensure that all financial information published to both internal and external customers is accurate, timely and compliant. Ensure that the month-end financial accounting close process produces timely and accurate financial information. Assist in the establishment and maintenance of an Internal Accounting Control environment that satisfies Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, including a review of all existing Accounting, Treasury, and Tax business processes which are supported by IT, in conjunction with external support and internal audit resources, with a view
3 to designing effective and efficient processes; Coordinate and partner with other members of our team to establish solid, repeatable budgeting, forecasting and reporting disciplines for Niska while investigating and reporting on monthly variances to budget and forecast. Assist in forming and communicating clear expectations for IT strategy as related to the Accounting, Treasury, and Tax groups in conjunction with the Director of Information Technology. Work closely with the Information Technology team to define reporting requirements, evaluate technology alternatives to meet those requirements and implement selected solutions. Coordinate preparation of internal monthly Board reporting package, in conjunction with the Financial Reporting Manager and Treasury. Qualifications & Experience A Bachelor s degree in finance or accounting along with advanced credentials (MBA, CPA, CA or equivalent practical experience) are required. Minimum of five to ten years of progressive experience in financial reporting is required. Experience in an energy-organization and early career experience in with a Big Four accounting firm is highly desirable. Proven ability to interface with the senior leadership team of the company. Significant, successful experience working with Enterprise applications in a large complex business that provides consistent and reliable information is a plus. The successful candidate will be a highly capable financial professional who comes with proven experience being part of a productive finance team and who has served in a similar senior role. Solid experience and expertise in relational database reporting, with a deep understanding of data structure, data integration/warehousing and data modelling and a great understanding and use of requirements gathering, analysis and testing. Personal Characteristics The successful candidate will be professional, technically proficient, an independent thinker, and a confident professional. You must be hands-on enough to see through the implementation of a new accounting system, policies, and procedures. A team player by nature, you must possess a strong set of personal and business values that coincide with that of Niska Gas Storage. S/he must have integrity
4 beyond reproach and the ethical soundness of a true professional. The successful candidate must also be able to rally, energize and lead people and processes to support a highly effective financial organization. Good people development skills (can motivate, recruit, develop and retain high potential people) are essential. Additional key characteristics include: Confidence and Credibility: must be able to quickly gain trust with internal and external constituents, particularly with the Vice President/Controller and the finance team. Action-oriented: A history of getting things done quickly and efficiently in complex situations. Results orientation with a strong work ethic: strives for and achieves critical business results while holding high standards for performance and effectively mobilizing resources. Superior analytical skills and particular attention to detail with sound business judgment and exceptional maturity and communication skills (both written and verbal).
