Self-Guided activity packets available. All grades Guided Excursions Journey through the Aquarium Adventure Exhibit at a steadier pace with the assistance of an Interpretive Naturalist. This undersea expert will guide your exploration, providing extensive information on the creatures and habitats you encounter along the way. By piloting your trip with your very own captain of education, your group will get the most out of our exhibit, with the least amount of work by you! Grades 1+ Behind-the-Scenes Tours Designed for advanced junior high and high school science groups, this Guided Tour emphasizes water quality, animal husbandry, exhibit maintenance and aquarium careers. Walk through animal holding areas to experience new sights, sounds and smells! Grades 6+ Interactive Diver Show Enrich your excursion by adding an Interactive Diver Show. Your group will get an opportunity to interact with a biologist in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit, our 25,000-gallon habitat. You and your students will be able to chat with a diver swimming underneath an oil rig teeming with redfish, snappers and even a shark! You can ask questions and learn everything you can imagine about this underwater habitat and its animals. Classroom Programs Study your A-B-Seas with our 30-minute classroom programs. Allow our expert educators to do the teaching at the Downtown Aquarium during your field lesson. TEKS-aligned subjects that have hands-on activities will engage your students. Some programs involve interactive lab projects and live animals. Outreach Programs Can t come to us? We ll come to you! All of the Classroom Programs at the Downtown Aquarium can travel to your school. We offer classroom and auditorium-style presentations. Discounts offered for a second program on the same day. Travel fees may apply. Distance Learning - Video Conferencing Most of our programs are now available for Distance Learning. Using video conferencing technology, your students can learn about the animals that call the Downtown Aquarium home without leaving the classroom. To learn more, see page 5. Special Needs/Multi-Age Level Classes Please let us know your needs in advance. The Downtown Aquarium s understanding educators can modify programs to fit most requests. HISD Title 1 schools are able to get free admission for their students to the Aquarium Adventure Exhibit during Special Seasonal Pricing. 4 PRESCHOOL Move & Groove! For the younger animal loving set (ages 3-5 years), we now have our Move & Groove Program. Kids will learn about how animals move while they move themselves in the classroom. This program includes live animals! 6 BRING THE WILDLIFE TO YOUR SCHOOL! Our educators can bring classroom programs and animal shows to your school! Outreach Programs No buses? Not enough chaperones? No problem, we ll come to you! The Downtown Aquarium will provide ocean and wildlife themed lessons right in your classroom. We bring the materials and the animal experts, you provide the students. Note: All of our 30-minute classroom programs are available for outreach. Some classroom programs involve live animals. See pages 3 and 4 for program topics. Animal Shows Make learning fun with our 30-minute auditorium-style animal presentations. Built for Survival Animal Show See animal adaptations in action. Animal trainers bring animals right to your school to show off their awesome adaptations. Our serval, macaws, or snakes can be a part of this interactive show. 7 BOOKING YOUR GROUP VOYAGE IS EASY! Field Lesson Registration The Downtown Aquarium requires advance reservations for all school groups. Reservations can be made by filling out the form on the following page of this brochure and faxing, mailing or ing the form to us. Reservations should be made as soon as possible, at least two weeks in advance. Payment All programs require full payment due at the time of the field trip. We accept credit cards, business checks and cash. You will receive a receipt at the time of payment. School group rates are already discounted; therefore, no other discounts apply. If you are tax exempt, please submit a copy of the signed state tax exemption certificate when you make your reservation. Check-In Made Easy All chaperones should wear ID badges. Buses should pull into the valet area at the front of the building to drop off students. Have your students line up near the Marlin Fountain. The teacher in charge can take the confirmation letter to the exhibit ticket booth where an Aquarium representative will greet you, count the group and give you all of the information you need for your adventure. Buses for school groups may park for free in the Aquarium Lot. Policies The Downtown Aquarium allows 1 teacher/chaperone for every 5 students for free. Additional adults will pay the school rate. Please arrive minutes early for check-in. Groups arriving late are not guaranteed specific time slots. At check-in, an actual count is recorded. If less than the reserved number of students come, a refund will be issued after your visit. If your total number of students is less than the minimum, you will still be charged for the minimum number of students. If more students come, the school will be billed for the remaining balance. For large groups, we will have staggered start times for tours. We ask that teachers and chaperones accompanying the group maintain responsibility for supervising the students during the visit by staying with their group the entire time. Any group displaying disruptive behavior will be asked to leave (without a refund). Because students have an opportunity to interact with some of our animals, we ask that teachers and chaperones encourage quiet, gentle behavior at this time. Aquarium staff reserves the right to limit animal interaction time if students do not conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. We now allow students to bring their own lunches and eat at the picnic tables on property. However, schools are responsible for keeping up with their own lunches as Downtown Aquarium does not have a place to store them. The Downtown Aquarium reserves the right to change program dates and times without prior notice. 6

8 TRIP TIPS Reservations are required for school group visits. Contact Susie Shark at or complete the included form and fax it to to reserve tickets. Reservations for education programs must be made at least two weeks prior to your visit. All reservations will receive a confirmation form. 8 Ask about our lesson plans and Self-Guided tour booklets to jump start your field lesson. Please be green! After eating, please pick up garbage and place it in the appropriate receptacles provided. Ask students to look under the table for straw wrappers! 9 Check out our daily schedule at the front of the Aquarium Adventure Exhibit. This lists animal feedings, animal interactions, or tiger enrichment activities. Plan your field trip for the fall or winter months when the crowds are smaller. Be sure all chaperones understand that they must stay with their assigned groups, regardless of age, at all times while on Aquarium grounds. This includes the Treasure Chest Gift Shop CALL TO HAVE ONE OF OUR MASCOTS, SHARKEY, NERO OR OCTAVIUS, VISIT YOUR SCHOOL EVENT, PARENT NIGHT, READING PARTY OR FIELD DAY.
