Karl Hedrick Thesis: Coordinated Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles GPA: 4.0/4.0 Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Bachelor of Science in Mathematics University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign GPA: 5.0/5.0 EXPERIENCE Nov 08 - Present Senior Research Associate Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, MN Nonlinear analysis: Developed algorithms for analysis and validation of nonlinear flight control laws. Applied the techniques to analyze the susceptibility of an F-18 to the falling leaf mode. Also computed time delay margins for an adaptive flight control law. Joint work with A. Chakraborty, A. Dorobantu, G. Balas, U. Topcu, and A. Packard. Wind turbine modeling, control, and fault detection: Applied aerospace fault detection techniques to a benchmark turbine fault detection problem. Used H-infinity control methods for blade load reduction and investigated the effects of wind turbulence. Joint work with A. Ozdemir and G. Balas. Analytical redundancy: Developed a method to efficiently compute reliability metrics (false alarms, etc.) for linear fault detection systems that use analytical redundancy. Developed methods to compute robust fault detection filters using convex optimization. Joint work with T. Wheeler, G. Balas, J. Bokor, B. Vanek and A. Packard. Education: Taught a graduate class on convex optimization and robust control theory in Spring Aug 04 Nov 08 Principal Scientist R&D Honeywell Labs, Aerospace Electronic Systems Minneapolis, MN Developed sensor fusion algorithm for future Big Three active safety system. Managed a joint project between the Honeywell Labs and the Air Transport business unit to analyze the Boeing 787 flight control electronics and investigate future fly-by-wire flight control systems. Analyzed the 787 system architecture for transport delays, Byzantine failures, and single event upsets. Designed signal monitors to prevent system failure. Developed, implemented and tested GPS-denied navigation algorithms (SLAM and visual odometry) using vision and inertial sensors. Investigated and explained re-entry instability of NASA s Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle.
2 Dec 02 Aug 04 Assistant Professor Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL Advised three graduate and two undergraduate students on projects involving estimation for automotive driver awareness systems, modeling and control of earth-moving vehicles, sensors for wildlife studies, and robustness analysis for nonlinear control systems. Co-authored proposals to NSF on model-based diagnostics for vapor compression cycle systems and control of distributed systems over wireless networks. Taught an undergraduate course on modeling and analysis of linear systems and a graduate course on analysis of nonlinear systems. Aug 01 Present Software Consultant MUSYN, Inc. Minneapolis, MN Implemented software for the Robust Control and Synthesis Toolbox in Matlab including loworder control design, frequency response data fitting, and worst-case robustness analysis. Updated mu analysis algorithm and developed new method for lower-bound computations. Jan 02 Nov 02 Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar Department of Mechanical Engineering University of California, Berkeley, CA Developed an optimization-based data processing technique for the use of experimental data in predictive models. Applied the method to a complex methane combustion model based on 325 chemical reactions and 77 experimental results. Constructed a polynomial toolbox using the object-oriented programming capabilities in Matlab. The toolbox has been packaged with SOSTOOLS and can be used to analyze and design nonlinear control systems. Jan 97 Dec 01 Research Assistant Vehicle Dynamics and Control Lab University of California, Berkeley, CA Designed a decentralized control algorithm for formation flight of unmanned aerial vehicles and developed a condition for the maximum vehicle-to-vehicle communication delay. Designed a collision avoidance system and an adaptive cruise control for Kia Motors. Implemented the adaptive cruise control on a Kia Enterprise using the dspace Autobox. Developed and experimentally validated a nonlinear vehicle model for a BMW 750iL. Used this model to test an adaptive cruise control designed for stop-and-go traffic conditions. Analyzed the effects of aerodynamic coefficient variations on the closed loop control of NASA s X-38 crew recovery vehicle. Reformulated the standard robust performance problem to handle correlations in the aerodynamic coefficients. Co-authored proposals that were funded through the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.
