1 Legal Studies and Criminal Science Judge Mertes Courtroom Mrs. Mertes Webpage: Moodle Legal Studies Course Page Civic Mission and Course Description: The mission of social studies teachers is to enable students to participate actively and responsibly as democratic citizens in a complex and changing American Society. American legal values and criminal justice system create a common bond among citizens to be active members of the legal and political system. As were prepare student for the 21 st century it is vital students understand the role of their government, laws and our founding documents on defining who we are as a nation. Legal Studies and Criminal Science is an introductory course that provides students with an overview of the legal system in America, with an emphasis on legal knowledge that will of use to them in their every-day lives. Topics covered in this class include the following: history of the legal system, the court and criminal justice structure in America, arrest procedures, the jury process, human rights, constitutional rights and issues, landmark cases, crime data, the juvenile justice system, the trial process, the media role in society and the Hollywood impact on people s understanding of the law. Students will complete a career quest project related to their future education and professional interests in law and criminal science jobs. Students will participate in a variety of activities and projects including: mock trials, field trips, debates, discussions, current event research projects, career interviews, online Moodle learning activities, simulations and have guest speakers participate in class. Service learning opportunities are available in this course offering.

2 Career Possibilities Related to Legal Studies and Criminal Justice: If you have a life long interest pursuing careers in law or criminal science, this class may provide you with some more knowledge and links to education and career requirements. Careers you may want to explore during our Legal Studies and Criminal Science Career Quest project include: lawyer, paralegal, court clerk, police officer, teacher, private detective, crime science investigator, city or county government, environmental jobs, public service, public policy, journalist specializing in legal issues, politics, homeland security, bureaucratic government jobs, government law agencies (FBI, CIA, etc.), military careers, judge, court jobs, etc. Course Outline: I. 4 Power Standards for Legal Studies and Criminal Science: At the end of this course, the student will be expected to: 1. Identify and explain basic legal and criminal justice terms. 2. Identity, explain and analyze procedures of the local, state, federal and tribal court system. 3. Identify, explain and analyze the fundamental concepts of constitutional, civil and criminal law. 4. Research and analyze evidence to participate in discussion and mock trial experiences related to equality, liberty, criminal issues, due process and constitutional rights. 5. Understand the role of the media in reporting legal and criminal justice facts versus the dramatization of these topics. 6. Select and analyze various documents that have influenced the legal, political and constitutional heritage of the United States. 7. Describe how 21 st century technology has reshaped our legal and criminal justice systems. 8. Identify the sources, evaluate the justification and analyze the implications of certain rights and responsibilities of citizens. Participation, Course Adventures and Project Expectations for Legal Studies and Criminal Science: 1. Students will come to class prepared every day to discuss assignments and readings and current event news related to legal and criminal justice matters. 2. Students have a responsibility to complete all individual assignments and all cooperative projects. 3. Students must express their thoughts in an intellectual matter and be respectful of others rights and ideas. 4. Students are expected to use our Moodle Legal Studies and Criminal Science Course page for research, assignment submission and current readings utilizing RSS Feeds. 5. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of mock trial and criminal justice simulations. 6. Students will complete a Law and Criminal Justice Career Quest Project for the purpose of investigating educational requirements, job pay and benefits as well as expectations of these jobs. 7. Students will participate in field trips and other experiences with law and criminal resource people. 8. Students will complete a Law Through the Lens Project that requires viewing television or Hollywood films to understand legal principles and criminal justice issues.

5 Judge Mertes Code of Conduct for Students: Students are expected to contribute a friendly and productive work environment by actions, words, and appropriate dress. Be on time, be an active participant, do not verbally or physically threaten or harass your peers, respect physical property in the classroom and respect the learning community rules Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Respect others beliefs, opinions, questions, and be cautious so that your statements do not ridicule, slander, or offend others. The four major classroom rules are: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, INTEGRITY, AND SELF-DISCIPLINE. Strive to do your best by learning skills, content, and general lessons of how to become an active participant in a democratic nation. : Students are required to have the following supplies for class: writing utensils, strong folder tor binder to hold handouts/papers, loose-leaf paper for assignments, a highlighter and a USB port for transporting documents and work. Student will need access to the Internet at home or during school hours to complete course expectations. Students should bring these supplies everyday to class with them no locker passes will be issued. If you have financial difficulty purchasing these supplies please talk to me. EXTRA HELP AND TEACHER AVAILABILITY: Mrs. Mertes is available for extra help in room 126 any of the following times: before school, assigned prep periods, or after school or jdmerte@spasd.k12.wi.us Please seek additional help if you don t understand something or feel like you are falling behind. Parents may contact me using my school address on front of syllabus GRADES: Your grade is based on the total number of points you earn on tests/quizzes, assignments, projects, attendance, and class participation. It is vital you complete all assignments and do your best to prepare for tests. Grades will be posted by student ID number and available on line. The grading scale as designated by school policy is as follows A B C D A B C D B C D F 59 & BELOW SEMESTER GRADE: 40% 1 st QUARTER 40% 2 nd QUARTER 20% FINAL EXAM (Seniors are eligible to exempt this exam following the school policy and grade expectations)

6 ASSIGNMENTS AND TEST POLICIES: Completion of homework is vital to prepare you for class discussions and activities. NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED If you are absent (including prearranged absences) it is your responsibility to make up all missed work. One day late per excused absences will be granted. No work is accepted for unexcused absences. Arranged ISS or OSS requires you to get work in advance Missing test days requires a student to make up the assessment within 48 hours. Missing test days frequently may result in an alternative form of assessment (mostly essay and short answer). A student is required for making up tests ahead for any pre-arranged absences. ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY: Any signs of cheating that includes but is not limited to: plagiarism, giving or receiving test answers, and copying homework will result in no credit and potential failure of the class. See the student handbook for clarification. Submit all work in your own words, cite works in research projects, use quotation marks as needed, and overall complete your own work. TARDY/ATTENDANCE: Be in your seats when the bell rings. The school tardy policy will be enforced. A student is tardy may lose participation points and may not hand in assignments for credit. Excessive tardiness may result in parent call and referral. Students more than ten or more minutes late without a pass are considered unexcused tardy. CLASS PARTICIPATION AND GENERAL CLASSROOM RULES: Students are to be alert and active participants of their class community homework points may be lost if you choose to not engage or sleep. NO gum or food in class. Students are NOT to sell candy or food during academic class time. Only clear water bottles will be allowed. NO calculator games, cell phone usage, or any electronic devices are allowed to be out or used during class activities or work time. First offense: confiscated and returned at end of hour, 2 nd offense: confiscated and taken to office to be picked up at end of day. 3 rd offense: confiscated and parents will have to pick up from Mrs. Mertes following a short conference. No electronic devices may be in your possession during a quiz or test materials will be placed at the front of the room. Appropriate and mature behavior, language and actions are expected. Any class behavior or language related to harassment, intolerance, profanity, immaturity, or disrespect will result in a conversation after class, a call home, and possible referral. Please refer to student handbook for definition of unacceptable behaviors and language.
