4 The Marinello Mission To create a high-quality academic environment that provides our students with the skills and tools they need to obtain a licensed, entry-level position in the beauty and wellness industry. Marinello History and Ownership It all began in 1903 when Ruth Maurer, wife of Dr. A.A. Maurer, a La Crosse, Wisconsin physician, cooked up a batch of face cream in a double boiler over a gas jet in the basement of her red brick home. Mrs. Maurer was certain big money could be made commercializing woman's ageless battle against the facial ravages of time. Two years later, with her products in demand throughout North America, Europe and three additional continents, Mrs. Maurer expanded her business by opening a beauty school to develop trained and capable beauticians. Named after Giovanni Marinello, the founder of Modern Cosmetology, the new beauty school was a great success. Soon Marinello Beauty Parlors using La Crosse-made products sprang up across the United States. A lot has changed since we first opened our doors in the early 1900s. But a commitment to education and quality beauty and wellness services never goes out of style. B&H Education, Inc., located in Beverly Hills, CA, acquired Marinello in 2004 and has helped the company remain on the cutting edge of education with the creation of our Marinello Method curriculum and other innovations. Today Marinello has more than 50 campuses helping students find a beautiful career path throughout California, Connecticut, Kansas, Massachusetts, Nevada and Utah. Marinello Campuses Marinello is comprised of modern facilities devoted to teaching the science and art of the beauty and wellness industry. Equipped with professional equipment commonly used in professional salons and spas around the country, each campus is carefully designed and furnished to provide our students with a handson training environment where they practice their newly learned skills and techniques on real people. Our campuses include classrooms and practical training areas (see Faculty & Staff insert for more detail). Reference books on topics related to the beauty and wellness industry as well as current periodicals (Modern Salon, Beauty Link, Nail Pro, etc.) and other reference texts are available for student use. Students also have access to the Media Center, Style Seat (an electronic tool for managing appointments) and online test preparation for their state board exam through Milady Publishing Company. Students may access this material by checking it out from campus staff and/or making arrangements to view the information on the Media Center. Faculty The faculty at Marinello has been hired for their expertise in their particular field of beauty and wellness. Marinello faculty is required to have at least three years of combined education and industry experience in order to be employed as instructors. Our faculty members are trained in the Marinello Method and understand the importance of both the Theory and Practical Training that are necessary for a student to be successful in their program of study. 3

Financing options consist of Federal grants and loans, institutional loans, alternative loan programs with a variety of repayment options, including participation, at approved locations, for certain veterans and workforce retraining benefits for eligible students. Marinello does not participate in any state financial aid programs. If a student obtains a loan to pay for an educational program, the student will have the responsibility to repay the full amount of the loan plus interest, less the amount of any refund, and if the student has received federal student financial aid funds, the student is entitled to a refund of the monies not paid from federal student financial aid program funds (as defined under the refund section of this Student Catalog, in the student s enrollment agreement, and in the Student Catalog Insert H: Student Handbook). Re-Enrollment Previously enrolled Marinello students who have not completed their program requirements may apply for reenrollment by contacting the campus Registrar and presenting a written request for re-enrollment. The request should include both a detailed explanation of the reasons for the student s previous withdrawal and why the student should be allowed to re-enroll. A campus committee consisting of a School manager, a School administrative staff member and a School instructional faculty member will consider the request for re-enrollment based on the student s letter, the student s past enrollment history, how long the student has been out of school and how many hours the student is required to complete to receive their diploma. If the student is approved for re-enrollment, full credit for previous properly documented and paid for instruction hours will be granted in accordance with state regulations. 11 Education at Marinello: Important Academic Rules and Information Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP) Standards: Marinello expects all students to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Each student enrolled at Marinello must: 1. Maintain a cumulative academic GPA of C (70%) or better at the end of each evaluation period, per the grading scale below. Practical assessments and theory tests grades are combined to produce a combined GPA reflecting the qualitative element of the SAP policy. Grade Level % Satisfactory 0 69% Unsatisfactory 2. Maintain a cumulative average attendance level of at least two-thirds (67%) of the scheduled hours indicated on the student s enrollment contract at the end of each evaluation period reflecting the quantitative element of the SAP policy. This ensures that there will be completion of the student s program within 150% of the scheduled course length which is the maximum time frame in which a student must complete the course. 3. Students meeting the minimum requirements for attendance and academic progress at any evaluation point will be considered to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress until the next evaluation period. Nail Technology 300 Hours Evaluation Periods: Satisfactory Academic Progress will be assessed at the following benchmarks of actual attended hours: Esthetics 600 Hours Master Esthetics Level Hours Cosmetology/ Barbering 1600 Hours Instructor Training 1000 Hours Master Esthetics 1200 Hours 150 Hours 300 Hours 300 Hours 450 Hours 450Hours 450 Hours 300Hours 600 Hours 600 Hours 900 Hours 900 Hours 900 Hours 1350 Hours 950 Hours 1050 Hours 1600 Hours 1000 Hours 1200 Hours *Transfer or Re-enrolled Students - Midpoint of the contracted hours or the established evaluation periods, whichever comes first. Determination of Progress Status: Students meeting the minimum requirements for academics and attendance at the evaluation point are considered to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress until the next scheduled evaluation. Students determined to not be maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress may have their Title IV finding interrupted, unless the student is on warning or has prevailed upon appeal resulting in a status of probation. Students will receive a hard-copy of their Satisfactory Progress Determination at the time of each of the evaluation periods. Warning Period: Students attending School during the warning period are still deemed to be in Satisfactory Academic Progress and will continue to receive Title IV assistance for that one payment period. Financial aid warning status is assigned without an appeal or other action by the student. If at the end of the warning period, the student meets both the attendance and academic requirements, they will re-establish Satisfactory Academic Progress and eligibility for Title IV assistance will continue. If at the end of the warning period, the student has not met both the attendance and academic requirements, the student is deemed to be unsatisfactory for the next evaluation period. 10

12 Probation: Students who fail to meet minimum requirements for attendance or academic progress after the warning period will be placed on probation and considered to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress during the probationary period, IF the student appeals the decision, AND prevails upon appeal. Appeals can only be granted if: 1. The student has the ability to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy standards by the end of the next evaluation period OR 2. The Institute has developed an academic plan for the student that, if followed, will ensure that the student is able to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards by the end of the next evaluation period. The student will be advised in writing of the actions required to attain Satisfactory Academic Progress by the end of the next evaluation period. If a student meets the minimum attendance and academic requirements by the end of the probationary period, satisfactory progress has been re-established and Title IV funds will be disbursed for the next payment period. If, at the end of the probationary period, the student has still not met both the attendance and academic requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress or by the academic plan, then he/she will be determined as NOT making Satisfactory Academic Progress and, if applicable, students will not be deemed eligible to receive Title IV funds. Students who are not eligible to receive Title IV funds must pay cash going forward and bring their account balance current in order to remain enrolled in their program or the student will be withdrawn from school. Appeal Procedure: If a student is determined to not be making Satisfactory Academic Progress at the evaluation point after the warning status, the student may appeal the determination. The student must submit a written appeal to the School within 15 days of the adverse decision on the SAP Appeal Form with supporting documentation as to the reasons why the determination should be reversed. This information should include what caused the student to fail to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (such as a death in the family, an injury or illness of the student or other allowable special circumstances), what has changed about the student s situation, and what the student will do going forward that will allow them to achieve Satisfactory Academic Progress by the next evaluation point. Appeal documents will be reviewed by a campus committee consisting of a School manager, a School administrative staff member and a School instructional faculty member and a decision will be made and reported to the student within 15 calendar days of receiving the appeal request form. The appeal and decision documents will be retained in the student file. If the student prevails upon appeal, the Satisfactory Academic Progress determination will be reversed, the student will be placed on probation status and federal financial aid will be reinstated as applicable. Re-establishment of Satisfactory Academic Progress: Students may re-establish Satisfactory Academic Progress and Title IV aid, as applicable, by meeting minimum attendance and academic requirements by the end of the warning or probationary period. Interruptions, Course Incompletes, Withdrawals: If enrollment is temporarily interrupted for a Leave of Absence (LOA), the student will return to school in the same progress status as prior to the Leave of Absence. Hours elapsed during a Leave of Absence will extend the student s contract period and maximum time frame by the same number of days taken in the Leave of Absence and will not be included in the student's cumulative attendance percentage calculation. Students who withdraw prior to completion of the course and wish to re-enroll will return in the same Satisfactory Academic Progress status as at the time of withdrawal. Course Incompletes, Repetition and Noncredit Remedial Courses: Course incompletes, repetition and noncredit remedial courses do not apply to this Institute. Therefore, these items have no effect upon the School's Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. Transfer Hours: With regard to Satisfactory Academic Progress, a student s transfer hours will be counted as both attempted and completed hours for the purpose of determining when the allowable maximum time frame has been exhausted. SAP evaluation periods are based on actual contracted hours at the School, therefore if a student withdraws from one clock hour program and enrolls in another clock hour program, 11

13 SAP is based on the actual contracted hours of the specific program. There are no degreed programs with declared majors at this Institute. Licensing Requirements The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) requires that any person desiring to conduct business as a Cosmetologist, Barber, Esthetician or Nail Technician must first complete the state required curriculum at an approved school and second pass the state licensing exam. Marinello s programs are designed with two goals in mind: first, to provide students with the state required educational curriculum necessary to qualify to take and pass the license exam, and second, to prepare our graduates to obtain employment in entry level positions in the beauty and wellness industry. Background Checks: 1. Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL): The application for issuance of a license by the DOPL requires an applicant to disclose background information relating to any conviction or plea of no contest to any violation of any law of the United States, in any state, local jurisdiction or any foreign country in order to determine a student s eligibility. Individuals who have been convicted of a crime can still apply. The DOPL will request documents relating to a conviction to be included with the application for license. These are reviewed and evaluated by the DOPL on a case-by-case basis. It is the student s responsibility to determine if any past criminal convictions will prevent them from obtaining the required state license. For more information, about state license requirements, an individual should contact the DOPL as follows: Division of Occupation and Professional Licensing 160 East 300 South, P.O. Box Salt Lake City, Utah Telephone (801) Student Clinic Success As a student, you will get practical hands-on training providing services for real people in the student clinic. This will help prepare you for the demands of the workplace once you graduate and become a licensed professional. Student success is dependent not only on their technical skill level, but also to a large degree on their customer service/business skills. In order to be successful in their chosen occupation, students are expected to bring their own guests to the student clinic to receive clinic services. This expectation is a part of the Marinello Method, which strives to develop a student s customer service and business skills while in school so that, upon graduation and starting their first job, the graduate will have developed the customer service tools and experiences necessary to build a loyal client base. Developing on-site customer service and business skills in the environment of the Marinello student clinic is part of what Marinello defines as student Practical Training. Practical Training includes students working on models, clinic guests, and training assignments on mannequin heads. A student s success is dependent upon their ability to use the job-critical skills learned at Marinello, including attendance, punctuality, professional image, and attitude, the ability to attract and retain clients, service productivity, and retail sales promotion. Physical, Health and Safety Prospective students should be aware of the physical demands required of a beauty and wellness industry professional. Occupations in the beauty and wellness industry generally require continued standing or sitting and constant use of the upper torso, shoulders, arms, wrist and hands, upper back and neck. Certain individuals may have allergies or sensitivities to the typical chemical products used in beauty and wellness occupations. 12

14 A student must be physically capable of performing all required activities conducted at the School and complying with all safety policies and procedures. Notice to Students Who May Be Pregnant WARNING: Exposure to chemicals used in the cosmetology industry may cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm to you and your unborn child. In addition, the physical demands required by the school curriculum could place unwanted stress on the mother and child during pregnancy. Please consider this and consult with your physician regarding these issues prior to enrolling and signing the enrollment agreement. Potential Earnings As with any career, the amount of income one can earn in the beauty and wellness industry is directly related to the amount of effort one applies to their career. Minimum efforts most likely will result in minimum earnings, while maximum efforts can lead to much higher levels of compensation. One s ability to earn income in the beauty and wellness industry is very dependent upon one s ability to communicate, present oneself professionally, develop great people skills, and maintain a positive attitude. The Marinello curriculum is designed to teach students these skills to help them obtain an entry level position upon graduation and licensing, but the effort students put forth to learn these skills is solely up to them. In addition to the above earning considerations, earnings levels can depend on work location, tipping habits, competition, the discretion of your employer and/or the position held. Accordingly, since earnings are dependent on the efforts of the individual and other factors, Marinello does not make any express or implied claim about the salary or wages that you may earn after completing your designated educational program. Please see our Important School Disclosures Catalog Insert as it relates to the outcomes in the educational program you select. Additional data for your review and consideration is available from the US Department of Labor at its Bureau of Labor Statistics which provides wage data by area and occupation at 13
