1 How to Conduct I-9 Self-Audits and Avoid the High Cost of Noncompliance An Immigration Best Practices Workshop Thursday, October 13, 2011, 8:30 a.m. to 1: 00 p.m. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency continues to conduct a record number of I-9 audits and sanction those companies who fail to provide stellar proof of their compliance. This initiative is designed to hold employers accountable for violations of I-9 rules and ensure that only those authorized to work in the U.S. are being employed. This informative workshop is designed to provide attendees with the basic knowledge, strategies, and hands-on training to conduct an internal I-9 self-audit an indispensable tool to ensure compliance and defend your company in the face of a government audit. I- 9 self-audits offer the checks and balances every company needs to uncover potential liability such as identity theft, employee use of fake documents, and costly mistakes in completion of I-9 forms. Internal audits also demonstrate to the government that a company is serious about compliance. In fact, ICE recommends I-9 self-audits as a best practice. 3 Speaker Bios Attorney Ann Massey Badmus, Founding Member, has concentrated her legal practice in the area of immigration law since Since that time, she has successfully processed hundreds of H1B, L1, E2, O1 and other temporary visas, J-1 two year foreign residency waiver applications for physicians, and permanent residence applications based upon labor certification, extraordinary ability aliens, national interest waivers, outstanding researchers, and multinational managers and executives. Ann has also represented clients in family-based immigration cases. Ann is also a sought-after speaker to various groups and organizations on issues of immigration. She has published numerous articles on immigration and has authored a wellreceived book entitled The Immigration Prescription: The Practical Guide to U.S. Immigration for Foreign Born Physicians. To keep her clients well-informed about changing immigration laws that affect their businesses and livelihood, Ms. Badmus conducts periodic seminars and tele-seminars and publishes a free monthly newsletter. Ann began her career in 1989 at the commercial law firm of Ashby & Geddes located in the corporate capital of the United States, Wilmington, Delaware. There she helped numerous businesses to comply with corporate laws. She also tried many cases regarding business issues. In 1993, Ann began her own private practice where she continued to concentrate on business law and expanded her practice to include immigration law. Since then, she has represented clients worldwide on a broad range of immigration issues. In 1998, Ann relocated her practice to Dallas, Texas and focused her legal expertise exclusively on Immigration and Nationality law. Ann is licensed to practice in Texas and Delaware. Lopez, Member, has exclusively concentrated her legal practice to the immigration field since As an immigrant herself, Angela understands the importance of competent and costeffective legal advice for businesses and individuals. At a personal level, she enjoys building long-term relationships with each person she represents. Angela has successfully developed a large national practice representing numerous foreign nationals, their employers and our rapidly growing segment of Spanish-speaking clients in a broad range of immigration matters. Her extensive experience in corporate and employment-based immigration includes labor certifications, executives/managers (L-1), Investors (E), professional workers (H-1B), religious workers (R-1), nurses, and physicians. She has also represented numerous clients in family-based immigration cases. In the medical Industry, Angela s clients range from individual physicians to small private practices to Hospitals and National Health Centers. She has guided physicians and their employers through J-1 waivers, H1B, O-1, and permanent residence applications based upon labor certification, national interest waivers nationwide and extraordinary ability. In 1989, Angela began her career as a Deputy District Attorney and Town Solicitor in Colombia, South America. In 1993, she worked with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Hampden County, as a Family Service Officer, gaining experience in Family Law, mediation and investigative services. In 1997, Angela was a founding partner in Mediation Works, a mediation center and dispute resolution service in Springfield, MA. After relocating to Texas in 1998, Angela completed her Masters in International and Comparative Law (LLM) at SMU in Dallas. During and after her Masters work, Angela worked with Alcon Laboratories, a Fortune 500 Company, in their International Legal Department, assisting Alcon affiliates worldwide on a broad range of issues related to International Business transactions. Angela is licensed to practice in Colombia, South America and State of New York. She continues her education by participating in various immigration seminars and focused continuing education courses. She is also a frequent speaker about immigration issues to interested groups such as Chambers of Commerce and other community organizations. 9 Attorney Michelle Alonzo, Associate, joined Badmus Law Firm in Prior to joining our firm, Ms. Alonzo worked at a Dallas area firm focusing on deportation defense and appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals, as well as preparing waivers for clients proceeding before the U. S. consulates abroad for their immigrant visas. She also practiced immigration law in Houston, Texas, where she assisted clients with family-based immigration, deportation cases and naturalization. Ms. Alonzo graduated in the first class of the Marianist Leadership Program at St. Mary s University and was an active intern and volunteer at the university s Service Learning Center throughout her undergraduate career. It was through one of the volunteer engagements at St. Mary s School of Law Center for Legal and Social Justice where Ms. Alonzo was first exposed to immigration law, translating for indigent Spanish-speaking persons meeting with their student attorneys. During law school, Michelle was an Alternative Dispute Resolution Advocate and Regional Finalist in 2006, a proud member of the STCL Hispanic Law Student Association. Ms. Alonzo was also a scholarship recipient. While in law school, Michelle found her passion in the area of immigration law and both worked and clerked for various immigration law firms in the Houston area. Ms. Alonzo is fluent in Spanish.
