2 To My Fellow Scouters: As you all know, Scouting is a wonderful program to assist our youth in their physical and mental development. It provides strong guide-lines for meeting the challenges of our society by attaining proper moral standards and creating a code of conduct for life. The Boy Scouts of America has and continues to, assist in this process and instill values exemplified by the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. Our role in this process is to teach the boys by word and by example. It is a daunting and sometimes can be an intimidating experience. The Boy Scouts of America has many programs to assist us in this challenging role. Scout Leader Specific Training is the first and a primary tool we have as well as monthly District Roundtables. Sometimes we need assistance, desire further education into new areas, or to expand our knowledge in areas that we are already involved in. The Connecticut University of Scouting helps to provide that knowledge and experience in a friendly environment of knowledge, experience, and friendship. As provost for the 2014 Connecticut University of Scouting, I would like to personally invite you to join us at the 2014 Connecticut University of Scouting on March 15 at Wilby High School in Waterbury, Connecticut. There are over one hundred courses with a new program for Venture Scouting and Sea Scouting as well as new additions for traditional Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting. You are not limited to your area of Scouting and may find some of the new courses in other areas intriguing and exciting. The formal registration process begins on January 6, There is a limitation on course size therefore early registration is suggested to avoid any disappointment but there are so many areas to experience that everyone can discover and explore new possibilities and perspectives to increase your personal knowledge and help to Deliver the Promise of Scouting. Pre-registration is required for all CUS participants and is available on-line at the Connecticut Rivers Council website: If you do not have access to the Internet, please have another Scouting colleague register for you. I hope to see you and meet you at the Connecticut University of Scouting on March 15, 2014 in Waterbury. If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact me at hiker472@cox.net. Yours in the Spirit of Scouting, Donald F Mordavsky Donald F Mordavsky Provost, Connecticut University of Scouting 2

3 Utilizing the Program Catalog The purpose of the Program Catalog is to help students plan their day at the CUS. It includes a listing of each course available in each College and School. Each listing includes the name, number and description of the course and the period or periods that it is presented. Some classes have multiple period courses and a few courses that require a small additional fee, such as CPR or First Aid certification classes. There will be an opening and closing session as well as seven academic periods and you should select either Period three or four for lunch, socializing with other CUS participants, and visiting our Midway. (Note: food is not allowed outside of the cafeteria. If you do not schedule a lunch period when registering for the CUS, you will not be able to do so on the day of the University.) A University personal course schedule is provided and a listing of courses in each college or area with a brief description follows. A class schedule form is provided to mark all of the courses that interest you. For each class period, select the one course that you are most interested in. Use this to guide for your class selection when you register on-line. A chart of classes is also available on the web site and may be useful in selecting your classes. Boy Scout leaders, Cub Scout leaders, and Commissioners would likely start their course review in their specific colleges. But don t stop there be sure to review ALL available courses because the other colleges all include some fascinating courses that you ll want to attend and there is limitation on class selection due to classroom size. The CUS Degree Program continues this year with the availability of courses for the Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree and Masters programs. These programs will provide CUS diplomas and uniform insignia for students who complete the prescribed coursework. Be sure to check out the Degree Program details noted below if you are interested in either of these programs. The Doctorate program will be added in the 2016 CUS curriculum. A Map & Travel Directions are attached as well as general rules on cell phones and dress code. We hope this provides all of the information you will need to plan your day with us. See you there! PS.
