2 Overview of GreenSteps GreenStep cities are on paths toward improved sustainability and quality of life for their residents and businesses 28 Best Practices in five broad categories Best Practices are staged and tiered to provide opportunities for all communities to achieve economic and sustainability benefits of their own choosing and at their own pace

3 One of the Best Practices is Solid Waste Reduction Eight (8) Waste Reduction Best Practice Actions: Reduce toxics from internal operations Meet goals for recycling/composting in internal operations Use a Resource Management Contract to reduce waste Promote use of repaired, used or recycled goods Arrange for SSO programs Implement city-wide collection systems(s) Offer volume-based pricing and or incentives to recycle Adopt C & D ordinance

11 Base Effort Recycling Practices (Least Benefit Expected) Include mandatory separation of recyclables in City ordinance (Education tool only; ordinance not enforced) Require space for recycling containers next to trash containers in Commercial and Multi-family Zoning Codes Include Recycling/Reuse tab on City website, update quarterly; include websites and videos for further information

12 Mid-Level Recycling Practices (Medium Benefits Expected) Implement Get Caught Recycling incentive program Recruit Environmental Block Leaders to put out lawn signs the day before recycling collections, and be the Recycling Guru Require quarterly reporting of non-recyclers in hauler license provisions Coordinate with local Chamber of Commerce to sponsor Waste-Wise presentation to businesses; volunteer City Hall as demonstration
