3 Major Accomplishments... Setting a good example for our clients, ESCH made great strides in 2011 to update and improve our organizational effectiveness in the following ways: Helped Christian-based foundation establish a vision/mission and hire a executive director. Based in Houston, Texas, Stoller is the world leader in development and sales of Plant Performance Products. Stoller representatives in more than 50 countries are active in the research, development and distribution of Stoller products Forged a new partnership with The Stoller Foundation that will include 10 capacity-building projects over the next year, creation of a fellows/intern program and co-branded seminars to be hosted from their newly created Stoller Resource Center Updated office technology, including an ongoing project to convert to user-friendly development software that allows better donor analysis, reporting and tracking Improved external communications through establishment of a LinkedIn group, establishment and monitoring of Google Analytics, as well more effective use of Facebook and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) provided by UH-MIS students pro bono Diversified our board members to better reflect the nonprofit community we serve Attracted new ESCH consultants in development and marketing fields to ensure that we have the consultant work variety and expertise needed to serve our clients diverse needs Rebranded the Spring Volunteer Luncheon to Leading Edge Luncheon with noted social media guru, Ed Schipul, as keynote speaker and to include annual honoring of a nonprofit client Secured funding for and revamped the ESCH website, with financial aid of the Leeke family and Netsential, including adding a login feature which allows geographically widespread consultants better communication/ training opportunities with clients and each other We don t fund nonprofits... we make their funding go further by helping to solve those Letter From the Chairman and Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one things of changing himself. - Leo Tolstoy Change for change sake is not necessarily good. In 2011, a new, Sally Tyler, CFRE, joined Executive Service Corps of Houston, following the retirement of Dr. Jane Harding. With her, ESCH s board and consultant volunteers took a long, hard look at themselves. Several meetings focused on elevating numbers of clients, broadening our consultant base with marketing and nonprofit development professionals, expanding the ethnicity of our board, improving general marketing, creating and strengthening alliances with other nonprofit management groups like United Way Houston, Rice University s Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, University of Houston s David Underwood Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and C.T. Bauer College of Business, among others. Thanks to support from The Fondren Foundation and the program created by Jeffrey Wilcox, CFRE, of Executive Service Corp of Southern California, ESCH hosted seven clients in its new Developing Development Program. This unique program provides organizations with the expert training and individualized coaching that helps fundraising grow and thrive by explaining developemt basics. The Adult Reading Center, The Next Step Fund (DiscoverU), Communities in Schools - Bay Area, The Friendship Center, Hashoo Foundation USA, Generation One and the Hispanic Health Coalition gathered new insights into fundraising and the culture of philanthropy. Marketing For years, ESCH has been reliant on word-of-mouth advertising. Recognizing the value of the internet in sharing important testimonials, ESCH created a LinkedIn Group and revamped its website through the creative efforts of Edge Creative Strategies and Netsential with funding from the The Leek Family Gift Fund of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. Funding, raised from board members, for converting data from ACCESS to SAGER50 resulted in more efficient delivery of donor information. Consultants continue to assist in the increase of nonprofit prospects and general contact database. A quarterly newsletter was established and probono street signage have enhanced ESCH s visibility. Kerr Consulting produced three probono YouTube videos. Events ESCH participates annually in the Shell Houston Open s Birdies for Charity which raised over $9,000 in support. The annual Springs Luncheon was rebranded as the Leading Edge Luncheon in June and with strong support from and Marathon, doubled the previous attendance. This volunteer recognition event spotlighted social media guru, Ed Schipul, Schipul Marketing, set stage for future fundraisers, raised a small amount for the organization, and cultivated several new donors: John L. Wortham & Sons, LLP, Amergy Bank, BBVA Compass Bank, and Kerr Consulting. ESCH continues to partner with Marathon through a day-long seminar for nonprofits; in October, we cohosted Healty Nonprofit with segments on social media, financial tips on basic elements, board motivation and governance and volunteer management with special guest speakes from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Whole Foods Market and the Houston Food Bank. Administrative Improvements Adding a website consultant login feature, search engine optimization, updating software, voic and improving network speed, along with professional IT assistance, Sconet, improved ESCH s community responsiveness. ESCH continues to evolve and commit itself to positive change. Leading the nonprofit community by example in new marketing and development strategies, ESCH will be better able to affect quality of life change for Houston. We hope you will join us in exploring ways to improve and sustain the nonprofits we serve. problems that hinder their Committed to Nonprofit Management Excellence productivity and impede their capacity to serve the public We help them to more efficiently carry out their missions. Burt Hering, D.Eng. Chairman of the Board 4 5

4 OUR SERVICES OUR CLIENTS The Project Coordination Committee assesses service requests and assigns consultants. Highlights: 41 organizations serviced with 54 projects 24 Management Information Systems projects conducted by collaboratively with the University of Houston, Bauer College of Business 6 Board Development, 1 Board Retreat, 1Board Service, and 1 Leadership Development projects provided The Training Committee schedules seminars and develops new presentations. Highlights: 24 seminars provided including 2 webinars 325 attendees representing 300 organizations 1 special day-long session hosted by Marathon Oil Company ESCH- Organizational Assessment Services help nonprofits focus on what is most important for their missions Each consulting project began with an organizational assessment that helped the nonprofit and the consultant determine organizational strengths and weaknesses and priorities to address. We are grateful to who again chose to be the named sponsor for these services. Executive Leadership Coaching helps executive directors focus on needed leadership skills ESCH continued its coaching program for executive directors. The model is a combination of a strengths-based approach and the emotional intelligence model. Consultants trained as coaches help executive directors during a six-month cycle of weekly and bi-weekly face-to-face coaching. Outcomes were highly positive, with all coachees reporting progress in every leadership skill chosen for coaching. Clients overwhelmingly endorse the program. ESCH-ConocoPhillips Educational Management Seminars help nonprofits focus on a variety of capacity-building issues Seminars and webinars on different management and capacity-building topics were offered. Feedback from attendees was highly positive. ESCH received an average of 4.4 on a 5- point scale regarding the usefulness of the information. We are grateful to ConocoPhillips for choosing to be the named sponsor for this service. Financial Fitness for Nonprofit Programs Financial Fitness for Nonprofits (FFNP) consists of a series of components to help board members and staff understand their fiduciary responsibilities, establish sound fiscal management and develop effective budgeting methods. FFNP will be provided by financial experts, who volunteer their services for ESCH. What are the results? Strong board oversight and staff operations providing these benefits: Confidence in making fiscally sound decisions, improved risk management, concise financial communications, better budgeting, forecasting and reporting, increased accountability and efficiency. Developing Development Program (DDP) underwritten by The Fondren Foundation Reductions in foundation and donor support. Increased demand for services. Programs and staff stretched thin. Every nonprofit needs more than short-term or piecemeal fundraising band-aids. DDP is a proven program that leads to sustainable success. DDP provides organizations with the expert training and individualized coaching that helps fundraising grow and thrive. Seven new clients shared their successes and challenges with each other in Our Clients are staying focused on their missions Organizations participating in management consultation projects represented a diverse spectrum of nonprofits. 5 EXAMPLES OF CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECTS: Clients strengthen capacity while keeping a focus on their missions BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY AGENCY: Avondale House MISSION: To provide children and young adults with autism the education and training to develop to their fullest potential PROBLEM: Avondale House was having problems keeping their website updated and had multiple list of donors, parents and supporters. RESOLUTION: In the Fall of 2011, students from UH as a part of the UH Bauer School of Business/ESCH partnership built a new website for Avondale House using readliy available software and trained Avondale House staff to update the website. Another UH student team created a database of donors, parents and supporters for Avondale House to use for their development efforts. AGENCY: Ridgemont Early Childood Center/Ft. Bend ISD MISSION: The Ridgemont Early Childhood Center is designed to facilitate parent involvement and the delivery of services intended to promote healthy prenatal outcomes, enhance the developement of very young children, and promote healthy family functioning. PROBLEM: A strategic plan was needed to assure effective utilization of resources. RESOLUTION: ESCH facilitated the establishment of a plan which was well received by the FBISD School Board, the Federal Program and the partner agencies. That plan called for creation of advisory board, broadening involvement of the community in the activites of the children and the school, strengthening relationships among the partner agencies as well as funders. The plan also called for taking steps to mature and institutionalize the collaboration that made this venture successful to date. A.J. Durrani and Frank McGrath were the lead ESCH consultants on this project. BUILDING EFFICIENCY AGENCY: The Stoller Foundation MISSION: The Stoller Foundation is a Christian charitable foundation whose mandate is to support those working to spread Christ s teaching to the world. PROBLEM: Established its mission/vision/giving guidelines and successfully conducted a job search for of the Stoller Foundation. As our partnership has grown, we are now working with Stoller to establish a Capacity Building Pilot Project. The goal of this project is to help nonprofits and ministries to grow and prosper in their ability to serve, strengthen the skills, competencies and abilities of their staff, and remove obstacles that prevent them from achieving measurable and sustainable results RESOLUTION: ESCH and the Stoller Foundation have formed a partnership to identify 10 nonprofits in the Houston area to develop and strengthen their organizational capabilities. Also, ESCH will provide mentoring for up to 10 people chosen to be Fellows under a Stoller Foundation program to foster volunteering. ESCH will conduct evaluations of this effort and provide consulting services to the agencies through ESCH client teams. ESCH and Stoller Foundation will co-host seminars at the Stoller Foundation Resource Center in AGENCY: Marvin and Juanita Smith Learning Centers of Excellence MISSION: To provide meaningful real-life answers to middle and high school students in an effort to greatly reduce teen promiscuity; pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections while encouraging them to achieve academically, emothionally, physically, and socially through a thought provoking & interactive cirriculum. PROBLEM: Strategic planning in order to expand and add additional locations. RESOLUTION: ESCH consultants A.J. Durrani and Roger Rolke worked closely with their volunteers and board members during the 5-month planning process that details expanding board membership and committee activity, focused marketing and communications to increase public awareness, and recruitment of additional volunteers. What Our Clients Say: Our ESCH consultants were able to affirm practices that were already in place in our organization as well as make suggestions for improvement in some areas. The consultants help with developing a formal policies and procedures document was our greatest take away. Care Net Pregnancy Center of Northwest Houston Mona Parish, We have now completed several days of planning with ESCH over the course of the last couple of months, and we cannot applaud your team enough. Frank McGrath, ably assisted by A.J. Durrani, has been masterful in leading our group in very purposeful and meaningful strategic planning. He has sorted his way through our complex system of collaboration and service and enabled us to much more clearly chart our path for the future. We can now see our center as indeed the starting place for bright futures for our children and families, thanks in large part to the work of ESCH. We feel much more confident that we can achieve our goals given the steady, strong hand of leadership he has provided to our team in the development of a workable and focused plan. Ridgemont Early Childhood Center/Ft. Bend ISD Mary Jackson, Ed.D., Director, Special Programs What Our Clients Say: For a first foray into this arena, the [MSLP service learning project] was a tremendous success, and we are most grateful for the opportunity to participate. It was a success on many levels: collaborating with ESCH and Marathon leadership, working with the MSLP team, and learning things from industry experts which we are already beginning to implement at our nonprofit. Krist Samaritan Center Pauline Gallien, Chief Operating Officer/Director of Development Executive Service Corps of Houston, a nonprofit devoted to helping other nonprofits strengthen their capacity for service to donors and the community, sponsored and coordinated a student team from the University of Houston s C.T. Bauer College of Business Management Information Systems Department worked on the website overhaul throughout the fall 2011 semester for school credit. The students main objectives were to make the site more easily navigable, improve its layout and design, and incorporate more advanced functionality. We re so grateful for the students hard work, said Avondale Development Assistant Emily Hawkins. The new site is more dynamic and user-friendly. Avondale House Philip T.
