2 Physical Education - Bachelor of Science in Physical Education Degree Program College of Education, University of South Carolina, (803) , STUDENT ADVISEMENT GUIDE This program is designed for undergraduate students at the University of South Carolina who are interested in a career as a physical education teacher. Students who successfully complete the degree requirements and have a positive recommendation by the faculty will be recommended for teacher certification in physical education at all levels (kindergarten-grade 12). Student Responsibility The College of Education faculty and staff work diligently to provide students all the information that is necessary to complete its undergraduate programs in a successful and timely manner. However, it is the student s responsibility to thoroughly read all of the information available in this handbook, handouts, on the College s web site, and in the USC Undergraduate Studies Bulletin. Likewise it is the student s responsibility to maintain accurate and current address and phone number information both with the Office of Student Affairs in the College of Education, and with the USC Registrar s office. Any exception to requirements must be submitted in writing to the College of Education, Office of Student Affairs, and until and unless a student has received a written response in the affirmative, the exception does not exist. South Carolina Teachers Loan Program (TLP) Under the current guidelines, South Carolina residents may be eligible to apply for the TLP during the four years of your baccalaureate degree program in the College of Education. Please be advised that you must meet the Praxis Core, SAT, or ACT testing requirement for eligibility. Students are advised to take the Praxis Core in their first semester of enrollment for earliest consideration, if the SAT or ACT requirement is not met. For more information: Degree Admissions Requirements New freshmen who meet University admissions standards are eligible for admission to degree programs offered by the College of Education. A student who wishes to enter the BSPE degree program from another college on the Columbia campus must be in good standing and have a collegiate summary GPA of 2.5 or higher. A student who wishes to enter this degree program from a regionally accredited college or university outside of the USC System or another campus of the USC system, must meet the above requirements and the applicable admission standards of the University. Students may not transfer any course that carries a grade of less than C. Placement Tests Incoming students at USC are required to take placement tests in math and in a foreign language. The results of those tests determine specific placement in courses in those two areas. College of Education advisors will assist students in determining which math and foreign language courses a student must complete in order to meet degree requirements. Students scoring lower than a score of two (2) on the foreign language placement test are required to satisfactorily complete equivalent study of foreign language at USC. 2

3 Earning Credit in Transient Status With the permission of the College of Education s Academic Dean, students may take up to 18 semester hours of course work from another institution provided they have at least a 2.00 USC grade point average; the courses are approved in advance by their academic advisor and the Dean; the other institution is fully accredited; and the course work meets University specifications for transfer credits. Students must request permission prior to taking a course from another institution in transient status. To do this, a student should meet with his/her advisor to discuss the course being requested and to complete a Special Enrollment Request form. The student should bring a description of the course they plan to take to that meeting. A grade of C or better must be earned in the transient course in order for it to transfer back to USC. s lower than a C do not transfer to USC. Therefore, any transfer course in which a grade less than C was earned cannot be used for degree credit. The last 30 credit hours toward your degree must be earned in residence at the University of South Carolina. Course Load Students must seek permission from their academic advisor to take a course load in excess of 17 hours. Students in the College of Education will not be allowed to register for more than 17 hours in a fall or spring semester unless they have earned at least a B average on the previous (most recent) 12 hours of coursework taken. In addition, the advisor will take into account the student s overall academic status when determining if a course overload will be granted and how many total hours would be approved. The College of Education does not recommend any student take an overload of hours and students who do so should be aware of the academic workload required for the courses they plan to take. Students who register for a course load of more than 16 semester hours in a fall or spring semester will pay an additional per hour fee as outlined in the schedule of fees available from the Bursar s Office ( Fees are subject to change. Field and Clinical Experiences All initial teacher certification programs in the College of Education require extensive field experiences in P-12 schools. All students must read and understand the rules and expectations outlined in the Preservice Teacher Education Clinical Experiences Manual ( ). Also be aware that in order to complete many of your education courses you will be required to submit to a criminal background check. Students with criminal convictions or pending charges may not be eligible for internship experiences or courses taught on-site in P-12 settings. At anytime while a student at USC, those who are arrested by any law enforcement agency are required to inform the Office of Student Judicial Programs of such matters within 72 hours of the arrest. Any student arrested while enrolled in an internship experience or courses taught on-site in a P-12 setting must also notify the College of Education, Office of School-University Partnerships and Clinical Experiences. Academic Advisement You will be assigned an advisor after you attend orientation or after you have completed the change of college process. Check under the academics tab on VIP to find out which advisor you have been assigned. Your advisor is located in the Office of Student Affairs, Wardlaw 113 and can be contacted at The formal advisement period consists of about 4-5 weeks during which you will schedule an appointment to plan your course work for the next semester. You will receive an through the university student system informing you of the dates for advisement and the steps which you need to follow to sign up for an advisement appointment. You will not be permitted to pre-register for classes until you have met with your assigned advisor. Students who miss the formal advisement period will not be advised until late advisement, which will be a specified date after open registration. 3

4 For questions not related to course selection, please make an appointment with your advisor outside of the formal advisement period. Progression Requirements for the Program To remain in a degree program offered by the College of Education, a student must make satisfactory academic progress toward the degree. A student who fails to make satisfactory progress may be placed on academic probation or be removed from the college. If a student majoring in Physical Education has two consecutive semesters of grade point averages below 2.50 and a cumulative grade point average below 2.50, the student will be suspended from academic programs in the Department of Physical Education. In addition, all students in the college are subject to the regulations on probation, suspension, and readmission in the USC Undergraduate Studies Bulletin entitled "Academic Standards Policies." A student in physical education must earn a C or better in specified course work, including major courses (those with department code of PEDU), education courses (those with department codes EDPY and EDFN), required sciences courses, courses in the analytical reasoning option, HPEB 321, ENGL 101, and ENGL 102. Students may attempt to earn a satisfactory grade in a major course no more than two times. Only if a valid case for taking the course a third time is established will such be allowed. Validity of a case will be determined by departmental review of a formal petition. Admission to the Professional Program Upon completion of 60 hours of course work, including courses specified by the Physical Education Program, the candidate may apply for admission to the Professional Program in Physical Education. For admission to the Professional Program the candidate must: Successfully complete all three sections (reading, writing, and mathematics) of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators. Information about this exam, including the Study Companion with practice questions, is available at Official passing scores on all three sections of the Praxis Core must be submitted before a student will be allowed to take PEDU 341 and PEDU 361. Note: Previously students were required to take all sections (reading, writing, and mathematics) of the Praxis I exam and the SC Department of Education will continue to accept passing scores on this examination until June 30, Additionally, students who have achieved a combined score of 1650 on the 3 part SAT or a composite score of 24 or better on the ACT are exempt from the Praxis Core requirement. Achieve a passing score on the EEDA (Education & Economic Development Act) assessment found under the My Organizations section in Blackboard. Achieve a Collegiate Summary GPA of 2.5 or higher prior to taking PEDU 340 & 360 Complete with a grade of C or better ENGL 101, ENGL 102, EDFN 300, EDPY 401, PEDU 570 Note: Must be admitted to the Professional Program one semester prior to directed (student) teaching (PEDU 479) Praxis I Preparation: Students can find information on preparing for the Praxis I exam on the College of Education, Office of Student Affairs website ( Admission to the Directed Teaching semester For admission into Directed Teaching (PEDU 479) a student must: be admitted to the Professional Program achieve a continuing collegiate summary GPA of 2.50 or higher. have signed directed teaching recommendation from Physical Education faculty have completed all other Physical Education major course work required for the degree program (only with special permission can a student participate in directed teaching without having completed all other major coursework) successfully complete criminal background check as required by the S.C. 5 Exit Requirements for the B.S.P.E Degree Successfully meet all of the requirements of the degree program Complete and submit an application for graduation to the College of Education Office of Student Affairs early in the last semester of the senior year. Students should consult the official University calendar for the specific date that the application is due. Certification In the teacher preparation programs, the degree requirements and certification requirements are linked. Inasmuch as certification requirements are the responsibility of the State Board of Education, if state regulations change, degree requirements are also subject to change. All students seeking a recommendation for certification in physical education must: Successfully complete the requirements of the degree program Achieve test scores at or above the level established by the state on the program appropriate exams (Praxis II series) Submit scores earned on the Praxis II to the Office of Student Affairs, College of Education, Wardlaw 113, USC, and to the State Department of Education Successfully complete criminal background check as required by the S.C. Department of Education Pay all certification fees as required Successfully complete ADEPT requirements with a positive recommendation for certification. All teacher preparation programs at USC are nationally recognized through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and lead to a recommendation for certification in South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Education has a reciprocity program with all US states, all Canadian Provinces, Guam, and Puerto Rico ( ). Graduates from one of the USC teacher preparation programs are typically able to obtain certification in another state. However, students seeking certification in other states should contact the appropriate office in that state to determine if any additional course or test requirement must be met. Typically, a South Carolina certificate will allow you to teach for at least one year while completing any additional requirements for full certification in the other state. Fees In addition to regular university tuition and fees, students will be responsible for fees as follows: A clinical experience fee of $200 when students register for PEDU 479 A certification fee of $75 assessed during final clinical experience (PEDU 479) A $105 fee paid to the South Carolina Department of Education at the time students apply for SC Teaching certification A $54.25 fee paid to L-1 Identity Solutions at the time students complete the SC Teaching Certification fingerprinting process Some of the required PEDU courses require lab/materials fees as outlined by the University Bursar ( ) Praxis Core and Praxis II exams require registrations fees as set by ETS ( All other appropriate fees as outlined by the University Bursar ( ) Note: All fees are subject to change 5
