However, security threats are increasing in these environments, creating a host of challenges for IT departments where the inability to easily verify online identities remains a major concern. Security is needed across all fronts of the enterprise, including mobile and cloud applications. IT managers need an effective yet easily deployable method for securing access to their applications from mobile devices that won't divert resources from their core responsibilities to keep systems running for revenue-generating processes. While two-factor authentication can be useful in deterring hackers, it doesn't address the root problem, which is that user identities and identifying personal information are scattered across the Internet. This allows hackers to use identity information that's poorly secured in one location to defeat security measures in others. Federated single sign-on (SSO) capability sourced from a central identity has the potential to address this problem and greatly improve security. This Technology Spotlight looks at these trends and the role that SecureAuth IdP plays in this strategic market. Introduction In today's business environment, security threats from both inside and outside the walls of the enterprise are increasing. The growth in threats is due to the rapid adoption of bring your own device (BYOD), the need for organizations to increase interaction with partners and suppliers, consumer demand for Internet access, and the growing number of remote workers who need to be connected. However, the new security risks associated with these trends can undermine online business where IDC estimates that almost $10 trillion in worldwide Internet ecommerce is generated. These trends create a host of challenges for IT departments where the inability to easily verify online identities with precision and a high degree of confidence remains a major concern. To address these challenges and also accommodate newer technology trends such as cloud and software as a service (SaaS), enterprise IT organizations must rethink how employee identities are configured and maintained within their infrastructures. Given this background, as an important dimension of identity and access management (IAM), SSO solutions have been gaining industry momentum and can help address these challenges. In addition, the standards environment has matured, and security building blocks such as SAML, OpenID, and WS-Fed are now much more familiar to IT professionals in many industries. Enterprises are encouraged to build on these standards so that they can better control and extend security standards to on-premise, mobile, and cloud-based applications in their organizations. IDC 1416

Key Market Trends IDC has defined advanced authentication software as including software tokens and software designed to support hardware authentication solutions such as tokens, smart cards, and biometrics. This definition also includes public key infrastructure (PKI) as it applies to advanced authentication solutions. An emerging trend in this space involves mobile identity and access management (MIAM) solutions, which provide authentication and authorization technologies (e.g., PKI certificates and SSL certificates) associated with ecommerce transactions conducted from mobile devices and technologies that support network access for mobile devices. Enterprise Mobility Challenges Enterprise mobility continues to be a persistent trend. Despite an economy still on shaky ground, many enterprises have begun to embrace mobility as a strategic imperative for the future. IDC's latest survey findings support this, with 51.3% of participants planning to spend more on mobility over the next 12 months and 27% planning to keep the level of spending at the same amount. Mobile device adoption will continue to proliferate at higher-than-average compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) from 2012 to Given this growth, companies are looking for ways to deal with BYOD where both corporate data and personal applications reside on an employee's smartphone or tablet device. However, as the number of mobile endpoints with sensitive corporate data increases, so too does the need to secure the data. Employees are using mobile devices to perform Web-based tasks that used to be performed by personal computers. Web applications are being modified to run on mobile devices. In addition to the preexisting Web applications now run on mobile and tablet devices, new "native" mobile applications are being developed for both enterprise users and their business partners. These applications require new mechanisms for security that follow the same identity governance policies that desktop systems have. Unfortunately, the growth in mobile computing greatly expands the attack surface for hackers. Because employees increasingly expect to be able to work anywhere on the device of their choice, the ability to manage and secure the corporate footprint of data on the device becomes essential. In a BYOD world, companies can now choose whether they need to secure and manage the entire employee-owned device or whether being able to secure a portion of that device is sufficient. Either way, steps must be taken to prevent data loss. Given these trends, securing mobile access from an identity access and management standpoint is a primary concern. The ability to provision and deprovision applications and data on personal devices in an efficient and compliant manner is key. Access control technologies for mobile may also include data loss prevention as well as security information and event management (SIEM). Even biometric solutions are becoming available to address these issues. A range of new solutions are being offered to help companies tackle these issues. However, this breadth of options can be confusing. There are many areas that mobile data management (MDM) does not address. One example is when the enterprise does not own or manage the access device, such as in a B2B or B2C scenario. End users are being approached by MDM vendors with one solution, by their current security vendors with another solution, by mobile application management with their approach, and potentially by dual-persona/byod solution vendors as well. The fact is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but identifying and understanding where the risks are will help organizations determine which approach to mobile security is best suited for their particular environment IDC

Issues Centering on Cloud and SaaS Deployment Another key area requiring a high level of access control is cloud computing, a new paradigm that entails shared access to virtualized resources over the Internet. IDC estimates that public IT cloud service spending will reach over $40 billion in 2012 and almost $100 billion in 2016,with a CAGR of 26.4%, five times the growth of the IT industry overall. IDC research also shows that cloud-based software, generally delivered as SaaS, is expected to be a key approach for software distribution over the next several years. Identity, protection, and trust are intertwined at the core of any successful cloud strategy. Networking is another closely related area where state-of-the-art identity and access management is needed. Different companies and verticals have varied thresholds for risk. Therefore, vendors that not only offer product suites or portfolios that allow companies to add on security functionality as needed but also provide choice in deployment model and price will attract the broadest audience of potential customers. The Benefits of IAM Solutions in Today's IT Environments It's widely acknowledged that usernames and passwords are weak tools to protect sensitive data. Despite this, they are widely utilized for access to resources ranging from online banking to remote access for corporate applications. Strong two-factor authentication can be very useful in deterring hackers who tend to go after "low-hanging fruit" with respect to breach opportunities. Unfortunately, simply implementing two-factor authentication doesn't address the root problem, which is that user identities and associated identifying personal information are scattered across the Internet. This allows hackers to use identity information that's poorly secured in one location to defeat security measures in others. To truly correct this problem, identities must be, in some sense, reclaimed. One approach to addressing these challenges is to promote the use of an identity provider (IdP), which is simply the authentication component that serves identity details to a service provider when Web- or cloud-based applications are involved. IdPs verify identities to a range of mobile or cloud applications in an agreed-upon Web format, usually a Layer 7 packet (SAML, OpenID, WS-Fed, etc.). Because user identities tend to sprawl across the Internet, attackers have a much larger surface area to attack. Shrinking that surface area enables many attack strategies to be defeated. Enterprises have been seeking secure SSO solutions for a number of years. The ability to manage SSO between respective business groups or divisions within an organization, as well as the ability to extend managed SSO beyond employees to partners and customers, is essential. Different groups require different sets of authorization for access. An SSO sourced from a central identity provider, instead of "daisy chaining," has the potential to greatly improve security. An IdP can provide SSO using a strong identity tool that already exists within the enterprise the enterprise directory (Active Directory, LDAP, etc.). This can be provided for cloud, SaaS applications, mobile applications, Web resources, and whatever else should be protected by a strong authentication approach. Considering SecureAuth SecureAuth is a solutions provider based in Irvine, California, that offers companies an extensible method of administering corporate identity governance for cloud-based applications, mobile devices, and networks. The company's core product, SecureAuth IdP, provides IT departments with a simplified way of managing and enforcing access, authentication, approval, and assertion based on existing user entitlements. Its IdP solution provides enterprises with SSO and federation capabilities for SaaS, Web, VPN, cloud, and mobile resources. It also provides two-factor authentication and identity provider functionality IDC 3

The product is designed to enable customers to have better control and enforce and extend security standards to all on-premise and cloud-based applications, as well as to any native and Web mobile devices supported by their organizations. It also enables SSO without the need to synchronize to an enterprise directory or send credentials to a third-party SSO provider (see Figure 1). F i g u r e 1 SecureAuth IdP Process Map Source: SecureAuth SecureAuth IdP for Mobile is a version of the product geared for mobile environments. It provides IT with a method to centrally manage and secure user access to enterprise-grade mobile applications and provide SSO between these applications. It is important to note that this product secures mobile applications by abstracting authentication from one application, then passing the identity to other applications with the intent of increasing security within an easy-to-deploy and easy-to-manage environment IDC

The product is inherently scalable. It provides two-factor authentication and SSO to native mobile, Web, and SaaS resources and integrates with any mobile application. Two-factor authentication is based on policies that the enterprise dictates for any user granted access. SecureAuth IdP for Mobile does not require client software, rooting of the device, or intrusive and invasive mobile device management plug-ins and is designed to be deployed across the entire enterprise in a matter of days. Access control is based on preexisting enterprise management groups and roles. SecureAuth IdP for Mobile addresses the need for enterprises to roll out mobile applications for ios, Android, Windows RT, and other operating systems. It accomplishes this by bridging the mobile app to the enterprise directory and using current directory stores such as Active Directory and LDAP to authenticate the user and deliver the identity to the mobile app. This provides a definitive, repeatable method to tie an identity to these applications and redeploy to various mobile platforms. SecureAuth supports multiple methods for two-factor authentication, including X.509, SMS OTP, Telephony OTP, KBA/KBQ, Yubikey, Help Desk, OTP, Static PIN, and U.S. federal CAC/PIV cards. It conducts SecureAuth browser-based authentication from a native mobile browser and redirects to SecureAuth for IdP for secure authentication (see Figure 2). F i g u r e 2 SecureAuth User Interface Source: SecureAuth 2012 IDC 5

After conducting the authentication and asserting the identity to the mobile app, SecureAuth IdP for Mobile Applications also logs the authentication either to a local SIEM server or to on-premise SecureAuth IdP logging and audit facilities. This enables the enterprise to know who authenticated, when the authentication was done, and what resource and method were employed so that it can comply with regulatory standards and best practice policies. SecureAuth for IdP also addresses the need for security in cloud and SaaS applications. It allows IT organizations to consolidate SaaS/Web access to a single portal and access to an ID that users already know by federating identity from Active Directory or other sources as described previously. The solution has features such as two-factor self-password reset that meets regulatory compliance and password synch to cloud resources such as Google. It also enforces password strength across cloud, Web, mobile, and network applications. Full enterprise identity management is included, which offers: Ability to create users in local datastore User self-management of information User self-provisioning of two-factor authentication Help desk management of user Assistance in deprovisioning of two-factor authentication Challenges IDC research shows that secure SSO and advanced authentication technologies are the two fastestgrowing segments of the overall IAM market worldwide. Many established players in this market have modified, created, or partnered for products to address customer needs for cloud and mobile computing. SecureAuth faces competition from industry leaders such as RSA (the Security Division of EMC), Symantec, CA Technologies, IBM, Ping Identity, and Oracle and from newer players in this market such as Okta, OneLogin, and Centrify. The challenge for SecureAuth is to quickly and effectively demonstrate its unique value proposition to companies and managed service providers within an increasingly crowded market space. Conclusion Security is needed across all fronts of the enterprise, and having security for mobile and cloud applications is part of protecting the network. IT managers need an effective yet easily deployable method for securing access to their applications from mobile devices that won't divert resources from IT's core responsibilities to keep systems running for revenue-generating processes. Cloud computing and SaaS applications also provide unique security challenges that need to be addressed. While two-factor authentication can be useful in deterring hackers who tend to go after "low-hanging fruit" with respect to breach opportunities, it doesn't address the root problem, which is that user identities and identifying personal information are scattered across the Internet. This allows hackers to use identity information that's poorly secured in one location to defeat security measures in others. Federated SSO capability sourced from a central identity has the potential to address this problem and greatly improve security. SecureAuth IdP is designed to provide IT departments with a simplified way of managing and enforcing access, authentication, approval, and assertion based on existing user entitlements. It delivers capabilities for SaaS, Web, VPN, cloud, and mobile resources in the enterprise via two-factor federated SSO authentication and identity provider functionality. Considering SecureAuth's offerings, IDC would count the company among the solid contenders providing IAM solutions for mobile, cloud, and network security markets IDC
