1 Elementary Education (Grades K 6) Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree Designed for: Students who desire an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and who want to earn a teaching license in the state of North Carolina for grades K-6. Program Description The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at North Carolina A&T State University engages Elementary Education majors in challenging academic coursework and real-world classroom experiences in local elementary public schools. Elementary Education majors progress through a series of strategic field experiences that increase each academic year. In the Freshman year, Elementary Education majors spend 20 hours during the course of a semester in an assigned public school, investigating issues related to the ethics of teaching. In the Sophomore year, Elementary Education majors spend 30 hours during the semester in a public school, examining culturally responsive teaching strategies that engage students from different backgrounds. In the Junior year, Elementary Education candidates spend 40 hours in a public school, practicing ways to differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of students. In the Senior year, Elementary Education candidates spend 60 hours in a public school, strengthening their teaching ability then they transition to serving as a student teacher where they assume full-time responsibility of an elementary classroom for 10 consecutive weeks. Admission to the Teacher Education Program All students who desire to attain a degree in Elementary Education must meet specific requirements to gain admission to the Teacher Education Program. Some of these requirements are as follows: A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.80 A grade of C or better in CUIN 110 Ethics of Teaching, CUIN 210 Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, and CUIN 310 Classroom Assessment in the 21 st Century Cumulative scores of 522 or higher on the Praxis I Criminal Background Check Satisfactory completion of a Teacher Education Interview Program Standards Elementary Education candidates meet all required standards and competencies through the completion of Electronic Evidences aligned with state and professional standards. Throughout the program, candidates must complete an electronic portfolio in TaskStream (www.taskstream.com), and each Electronic Evidence produced must be evaluated at a level of proficiency to receive recommendation for an elementary teaching license. Candidates must also receive passing scores on the Praxis II examination (Test 0015) required by the state of North Carolina for licensure. 2 Student Learning Outcomes Candidates who complete the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education program at North Carolina A&T State University will achieve the following outcomes: exhibit effective communication skills (written, oral, graphic and interpersonal) appropriate for elementary teacher leaders with advanced certification(s). effectively use quantitative and/or qualitative problem solving skills appropriate for elementary teacher leaders with advanced certification(s). demonstrate a level of expertise (knowledge, skills, and professionalism) appropriate for elementary teacher leaders with advanced certification(s). demonstrate ability to engage productively in the review and conduct of disciplinary research and creative professional activity appropriate for elementary teacher leaders with advanced certification(s). Recommendation for Licensure Requirements For recommendation for a North Carolina initial teaching license in Elementary Education, candidates must satisfy the following requirements: Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.80 or higher Grade of C in all major required courses Successful completion of Student Teaching experience during senior year Passing score of 161 or higher on the Praxis II examination (Test 0015) Proficiency scored on Electronic Evidences in TaskStream Portfolio Application for licensure processed through the Office of the Dean Contact Information Department of Curriculum and Instruction School of Education 270 Proctor Hall (336)

Candidates are required to complete 18 credit hours in one of the corollary studies areas. Candidates are strongly discouraged from switching the chosen corollary studies area once s/he begins taking courses within the selected area. Failure to do so will further extend the time required to complete licensure requirements.
