1 Future Ready Panel of Experts Laura Milam Acree Research Associate, Friday Institute Facilitator for Professional Learning Breakout Session Lauren Acree is a research associate at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation where she serves as the policy analysis and professional learning lead. Currently, Acree is project manager for the Learning Differences Massive Open Online Course for Educators and is leading the Friday Institute s work on teacher badging. She also contributed to the North Carolina Digital Learning Plan, a State Leaders in Digital Learning Course, and the national program Leadership in Blended Learning. Rachel Anderson Senior Associate of Policy and Advocacy, Data Quality Campaign Facilitator for Keeping Students Safe Breakout Session Rachel joined Data Quality Campaign (DQC) to support the work of ensuring academic success for all students through access to and meaningful use of high-quality data. Anderson aids policymakers in understanding their role in supporting effective data use, focusing on the landscape of state education data systems, student data privacy, personalized learning, and education technology. Denise Atkinson-Shorey Chief Executive Officer, E-Luminosity Facilitator for Funding Strategies Breakout Session Denise Atkinson-Shorey possesses both corporate and nonprofit experience, which provides a unique vision and brings strong skills in business development, financial sustainability and a tenacity that produces results. Atkinson-Shorey has served in a variety of leadership roles that include running a statewide broadband initiative, managing regional technical organizations, national consultancies, successful grant writing, public policy advocacy, nonprofit board work, and corporate sector expertise. Twice she was recognized by her peers for Outstanding Technology Leadership and is a former board member for the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) and for Colorado Association for Leaders of Education Technology. Marie Bjerede Founder, e-mergents; Project Director, Consortium for School Networking Facilitator of Funding Strategies Breakout Session Marie Bjerede is an established authority on mobile learning, the founder of e-mergents LLC, and a twenty-five-year veteran executive leader in high-tech and wireless communication development. Bjerede advises schools, startups, and technology leaders on the products, practices, and platforms that enable and scale authentic learning and teaching with technology. Bjerede takes an unconventional approach in all her endeavors, removing constraints from systems to get bigger payoffs with less effort.

2 Richard Culatta Director, Office of Educational Technology, U.S. Department of Education Summit Moderator / Facilitator of Funding Strategies Breakout Session Richard Culatta is a leader in the field of educational innovation. He has experience in K 12 education, higher education, and workplace learning environments. As director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education, Culatta s work focuses on leveraging technology to create personalized learning experiences for all students and promoting increased connectivity to improve access to education and make college more affordable. Culatta is passionate about accelerating innovation in education with a particular interest in games for learning, personalized learning, and open education. As a former Spanish teacher, Culatta remains an advocate for bilingual education. Gordon K. Dahlby, PhD Educational Technology Consultant/ Project Manager, Consortium for School Networking Facilitator of Funding Strategies Breakout Session Gordon Dahlby serves as a project manager for Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), recently on online Communities of Practice; working with the U.S. Department of Education; and Smart Education Networks by Design initiatives. He consults and speaks to school and district leaders, organizations, and corporations regarding educational technology leadership in policy, planning, and practice. Dahlby works passionately to encourage young technology innovators and encourages educators to connect students outside their zip code. Scott Drossos Senior Vice President for Digital Partnerships, McGraw-Hill Education Guest Moderator Scott Drossos has had a distinguished career in building and leading education technology organizations, as well as working closely with states and school districts to embrace systemic digital learning. He has a deep background in learning technologies and the growth of digital in education. Drossos s extensive experience working with schools and school systems in the areas of school management, assessment and data management systems, school governance, education policy, collaboration and communication software, educator development and collaborative project-based learning serve him well in leading this work. Prior to McGraw-Hill Education, Drossos worked for Pearson, where he conceived of and led the research, development, implementation, and oversight of 1:1 learning strategy. Danielle Evennou Senior Associate, Policy & Advocacy, Data Quality Campaign Facilitator for Keeping Students Safe Breakout Session As a member of Data Quality Campaign s (DQC s) policy and advocacy team, Danielle Evennou provides policymakers with concise materials that convey the ways that data are being used to improve student achievement. Evennou possesses knowledge of federal privacy laws, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and how they shape the work of states and schools. 2

3 Abbey Futrell Research Associate, Friday Institute Facilitator for Professional Learning Breakout Session Abbey Futrell serves as a research associate and digital innovation coach at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. Prior to joining the digital learning collaborative team there, here collective fifteen years in education includes service at the local, district, regional, and state levels, where Futrell s roles have included a public school middle grades language arts teacher, public school secondary English literature teacher, district instructional technology facilitator, 6 12 instructional coach, and professional development consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Futrell s work with the Friday Institute encompasses virtual and face-to-face instructional technology coaching for teacher leadership teams and 1:1 school districts across the state of North Carolina. Steve Garton Senior Manager of Learning Solutions, Common Sense Education Facilitator for Curriculum Breakout Session Steve Garton is an expert in meaningful technology integration, particularly in large-scale initiatives. He supports districts with professional development planning, program monitoring, student assessment, and communication across stakeholder groups. Prior to joining Common Sense Education, Garton was coordinator of educational technology for Maine Department of Education, where he led the professional development programs for the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, the state s 1:1 program that supports more than 12,000 teachers and administrators. As a member of the state s DOE leadership team, he provided policy support and leadership. Shanika Hope, PhD Vice President of National Urban Market Initiatives, McGraw-Hill Education Guest Moderator Shanika Hope possesses more than twenty years of experience in education. She is a former elementary school teacher, principal, and high school turnaround specialist. Hope has managed and/or supported more than three dozen DC public schools and public charter schools in various capacities. Prior to her current role as vice president of national urban markets initiatives at McGraw-Hill Education, Hope s experiences included serving as vice president of curriculum and instruction at Discovery Education, assistant superintendent of elementary and secondary education for the DC State Education Office, as well as a school performance officer for DC Public Schools. Hope also served as a school principal and teacher in both Washington, DC, and Virginia. Nell Hurley Director of Marketing and Communications, EducationSuperHighway Facilitator for Network Breakout Session Nell Hurley is responsible for all marketing, communications, and advocacy initiatives for EducationSuperHighway where she makes sure that the tools and programs developed reach their district, state, and federal audiences. Hurley has more than ten years of marketing experience, much of which was focused in the education space. Most recently, she worked in product marketing for Adobe s education vertical. Prior to that, Hurley was at Teach for America managing communications and outreach to the corps of teachers in New York City. 3

4 Renee Jackson, EdD Senior Manager of Education Programs, National PTA Facilitator for Community Engagement Breakout Session As senior manager of education programs at National PTA, Renee Jackson is responsible for the management, implementation, and promotion of education programs and training to increase community and family engagement. She has been an educator for more than twenty-one years. Prior to joining National PTA, Jackson served as principal and assistant principal in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was named 2010 NC Sandhills Region Principal of the Year and 2009 Cumberland County Schools Principal of the Year. Chris Kingsley Associate Director of Local Policy and Advocacy, Data Quality Campaign Facilitator for Keeping Students Safe Breakout Session Chris Kingsley leads the Data Quality Campaign s (DQC s) state-local alignment efforts, helping state policymakers improve the availability and use of high-quality education data among local leaders working both inside and outside of schools to improve student success. Prior to joining DQC, Kingsley served as principal associate for data initiatives with the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families, where he provided primary program leadership, research, and technical assistance to cities seeking to use data in new and more collaborative ways. Keith R. Krueger Chief Executive Officer, Consortium for School Networking Facilitator for Funding Strategies Breakout Session Keith Krueger is Chief Executive Officer of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), a nonprofit organization that serves as the voice of K 12 school system technology leaders. CoSN s mission is empowering educational leaders to leverage technology to realize engaging learning environments. In 2008, Krueger was selected by eschool News as one of ten people who have had a profound impact on educational technology over the last decade. Ben Kutler Director of Network Strategy and Planning, EducationSuperHighway Facilitator of Network Breakout Session Ben Kutler is responsible for leading the implementation of EducationSuperHighway s programs with school districts. Kutler has more than fifteen years of technology development and implementation experience, working at Kontiki, Verisign, Aggregate Knowledge, and Trilogy Software. Most recently, Kutler was director of solutions at Junyo, working with a number of leading schools to integrate their online data systems. 4

5 Kathy Lally Chief of Staff, Data Quality Campaign Facilitator for Keeping Students Safe Breakout Session Kathy Lally acts as a thought partner for Data Quality Campaign (DQC) on all strategic matters, including current and future direction and management. She builds and nurtures relationships with DQC stakeholders, including policymakers, data managers, funders, and partners, and she manages the DQC offices in Washington, DC. Prior to joining DQC in 2011, Lally held a number of roles leading children and family programming. She most recently headed the District of Columbia Public Schools s (DCPS s) Office of Outof-School Time, directing all DCPS efforts to ensure that students hours outside the classroom were full of enriching and engaging academic and wellness activities in afterschool and summer school programs. Cheryl Lemke Chief Executive Officer and President, Metiri Group Future Ready Dashboard Designer As a recognized speaker and facilitator, Cheryl Lemke connects with educators, policymakers, private sector leaders, and advocates internationally. Lemke regularly collaborates with different educational leaders to deepen their thinking and provide evaluation of technologies, learning goals, and systems that support K 16 learning. Lemke specializes in public policy for K 16 learning technology, working at many levels with governors, legislators, superintendents, professors, business leaders, and teachers. She currently works with both the public and private sectors in states across the country, as well as at the national level. Shawn Mahoney, PhD Chief Academic Officer, McGraw-Hill Education Guest Moderator As chief academic officer for McGraw-Hill Education, Shawn Mahoney is responsible for leading all aspects of academic design for pre-k 12 solutions, including product integrity, thought leadership, and vision. Nancy Mangum Research Scholar, Friday Institute Summit Moderator Nancy Mangum s work at the Friday Institute includes guiding principals and district leaders as they implement digital transitions through professional development, strategic planning, and coaching. She leads several projects, including the North Carolina Digital Leaders Coaching Network and the Western EdNet Administrator Cohort. She is also a facilitator for the North Carolina Distinguished Leaders in Practice for Digital Learning program. Mangum brings a depth of knowledge about curriculum, pedagogy, and instructional technology, with past experiences as a classroom teacher, technology facilitator, and district leader. 5

6 Jeff Mao Senior Director, Common Sense Education Summit Moderator/Facilitator for Curriculum Breakout Session Jeff Mao joined Common Sense Education in fall 2014 after ten years at the Maine Department of Education where he served as the learning technology policy director. In that role, he provided leadership and education technology policy support to four education commissioners, and he was directly responsible for the implementation of the nation s only statewide 1:1 learning program, the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI). As the head of MLTI, Mao oversaw all aspects of the program including vision, implementation, policy, professional development, procurement, and contract management. Additionally, he supported the statewide broadband network that serves Maine s schools and libraries and led the creation of AP4ALL, a program that provides free online Advanced Placement courses to Maine students. Joe Mazza, EdD Leadership Innovation Manager, University of Pennsylvania s Graduate School of Education Facilitator for Community Engagement Breakout Session Joe Mazza serves as the leadership innovation manager at the University of Pennsylvania s Graduate School of Education. He also serves as an advisor to the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, DC. Before moving to higher education, Mazza served as K 12 project manager for Connected Teaching, Learning & Leadership in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. He has spent his career working with students, teachers, and families as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal, while also serving as a TV studio producer, webmaster, and technology integration coach in each setting. Mazza holds a doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. Tom Murray State and District Digital Learning Director, Alliance for Excellent Education Summit Moderator Tom Murray is a former CIO and school principal who is passionate about proper digital learning implementation and personalized professional learning. He has testified before the U.S. Congress and works alongside that body and the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Department of Education and state departments of education, corporations, and school districts throughout the country to implement digital learning through Future Ready and Digital Learning Day. Murray s nationally recognized experiences in K 12 digital leadership include implementing a 1:1 program, BYOD, blended learning, and serving as director of technology and cyber education for the Quakertown Community School District in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Yasmin Narielvala Director of District Programs, EducationSuperHighway Facilitator of Network Breakout Session Yasmin is responsible for making upgrades easier, more affordable and more accessible by developing and aligning EducationSuperHighway programs towards without district partners. She has more than 15 years of experience in the telecoms sector globally, working at the intersection of technology and strategy. Her prior experience includes managing the strategy consulting practice of Deutsche Telekom s US subsidiary, and building and managing the professional services team for a start-up technology firm in London. 6

7 Jen Overgaag Field Network Consultant, EducationSuperHighway Facilitator of Network Breakout Session Jen removes technical barriers for school district tech directors and helps them upgrade their networks so that students spend less time waiting for learning to load and more time engaging with rich digital content. She has designed and installed emergency relief networks in Haiti and the Philippines, led a project to provide power, computers, and connectivity to 900 schools in Tanzania, and provided Internet connectivity to HIV/AIDS clinics in rural Kenya. Mark Samberg Technology Innovations Lead, Friday Institute Facilitator for Professional Learning Breakout Session Mark Samberg is the technology innovations lead at the Friday Institute, where he works with inside teams and school districts on technology programs design and implementation, professional development, and technology planning. Prior to joining the Friday Institute, Samberg served as chief technology officer in two small districts in Northeastern North Carolina, and as an instructional technology facilitator at the high school and district levels. He also worked as a programmer with a large North Carolina school district, developing data management systems. Samberg holds an educational CTO certification from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, BS degrees in math education and computer science from North Carolina State University, and a MEd degree in instructional technology from East Carolina University. Brian Shih Field Network Consultant, EducationSuperHighway Facilitator of Network Breakout Session In his role at EducationSuperHighway, Brian Shih helps school districts with their technical issues. He makes sure that districts have access to all of the valuable resources and tools necessary for them to optimally run their networks. Shih has close to fifteen years of experience designing, building, operating, and troubleshooting networks of all sizes in various parts of the world. Joseph South Deputy Director, Office of Educational Technology, U.S. Department of Education Facilitator of Funding Strategies Breakout Session Joseph South has extensive experience establishing and scaling educational technology solutions in startup, corporate, nonprofit, and higher education settings. He was most recently senior director at K12 Inc. where he served as a strategic consultant on higher education initiatives while directing K 12 curriculum development offices in Utah and Oklahoma. South has pioneered online and blended learning solutions for institutions of higher education in science, foreign language, religion, and humanities. He has served as a strategic consultant and advisor to ed tech startups, museums, and institutions of higher education. In the nonprofit sector, South has taught principals and superintendents how to use technology more effectively, and developed and deployed computational science educational resources for public school students. 7

8 Katrina Stevens Senior Advisor, Office of Educational Technology, U.S. Department of Education Summit Moderator / Facilitator of Keeping Students Safe Breakout Session Katrina Stevens has extensive experience designing curricula; conducting professional development; designing, reviewing, and integrating education technology; writing and managing grants, projects, and programs; and developing teachers and leaders in both public and independent school settings. Stevens has more than twenty years teaching experience, and before her role as senior advisor in the U.S. Office of Educational Technology, she organized summits across the country that brought together educators and ed tech companies for meaningful dialogue and served as the founding executive director of EdTech Maryland. In these roles, Stevens fostered collaboration among educators, ed tech startups, researchers, and community leaders. Barbara Treacy Digital Learning Consultant/Instructor, Harvard Graduate School of Education Facilitator for Professional Learning Breakout Session Barbara Treacy is a digital education consultant who has worked with states, districts, colleges and universities, and other educational organizations to build successful online and blended programs for teachers, students, and leaders. She is an instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education where her teaching focuses on the potential of online professional learning. Treacy is an advisor to several educational organizations, including serving as chair of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education s Digital Learning Advisory Council. Mary Ann Wolf, PhD Director of Digital Learning Programs, Friday Institute Summit Moderator Mary Ann Wolf has fifteen years of experience in education and education technology, and has worked closely with federal, state, and local education leaders; policymakers; and organizations on connecting policy and practice for innovative education reform, digital learning, and instructional practices. Wolf developed and co-facilitated the Digital Learning Transition MOOC for Educators, helped develop and implement the first ever National Digital Learning Day with the Alliance for Excellent Education. She is a member of the North Carolina Governor s elearning Commission, and was the Executive Director of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA). In this position, she worked with educators in all 50 states and with policy-makers to share data and models of how to improve education to ensure America s and our students competitiveness in the global economy. Steve Young Chief Technology Officer, Judson Independent School District Facilitator of Funding Strategies Breakout Session As head of technology services department at Judson Independent School District, Steve Young oversee network operations, server hardware, desktop hardware, data services, application support, programming, help desk support, telecommunications, and radio. Young also founded the San Antonio Area Technology Directors group, which has met quarterly since its inception in The group serves as a vendor agnostic informal community of technology leaders who share project ideas, concerns, and solutions to common problems. 8
