3 The Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is an independent discipline requiring specialized knowledge and skills. A background in Linguistics, Sociology, Anthropology, Modern Languages and TESOL Methodology can facilitate the work of teachers and other professionals who function on a regular basis in multicultural contexts. The TESOL Program subscribes to TESOL s Statement of Core Standards for Language and Professional Preparation Programs. Since 1972, Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) has offered programs and courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels for professionals and preprofessionals who want formal training in or familiarity with TESOL, Linguistics, and related fields. Graduates currently teach in many countries around the world and in Connecticut schools as well as adult education programs, intensive language institutes, and community colleges in Connecticut and other States in the USA. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the Program in TESOL c/o the English Department at CCSU for information on recommended course sequences and course requirements. 4 GOALSTATEMENTANDPROJECTEDCOMPETENCIES ThegoalofTESOLprogramsatCCSUistoprepareteacherstousemodern methodstomeetthevaryinginstructionalneedsofstudentsofenglishasasecondor foreignlanguagewhileencouragingsuchstudentstomaintaintheirnativelanguageand culturalcompetency.studentswhograduatefromthemaster sorcertificationprogram canexpecttobepreparednotonlyforfirstjobsteachingenglish,butforfullandlonglastingcareersinthisfield.theyreceiveathoroughgroundinginpracticalskillsand methodsoflanguagereachingtodevelopcommunicativecompetenceandappropriate academicskillsinenglish,andbecomefamiliarwithissuesinvolvingthenatureof language,languageacquisition,andtheroleoflanguageinsociety.morespecifically,itis expectedthatallstudentsleavingtheprogramswillhavethefollowingcompetencies: 1. AbilitytousedifferentmethodsofinstructionintheteachingofEnglishand developmentofrelevantcommunicativeandacademicskillsforspeakersofother languages,andtoevaluatethesemethodsinlightofwhatisknownabout processesoflanguageacquisitionandeducationaldevelopment; 2. Abilitytounderstandlinguistictheoryandtosuethisunderstandingtogain substantialinsightsintothestructureofenglishandotherlanguagessothat students languageacquisitioncanbeunderstoodandpedagogicalproblemscan bedealtwith; 3. Abilitytodiagnoseindividualstudentproblemsanddesignappropriateprograms ofremediationinaccordancewithindividualstudentgoals; 4. Abilitytoempathizewithlanguagelearningproblemsofstudentsasaresultof havinghadthepersonalexperienceoflearningasecondlanguage; 5. Abilitytounderstandtherulesoflanguageuseandchangeinsociety,the importanceofidiomandusage,andthenatureofdialectdifferencesandtheir socialvalue; 6. AbilitytointerpretAmericanculturemeaningfullytostudentsasaresultof familiaritywithculturesofotherlandsandwithprocessesofsocializationand acculturation; 7. AbilitytocommunicateeffectivelyinEnglishandtodevelopthisabilityin students; 8. Abilitytofunctionasaneducationalinnovatortointroducemodernmethodsinto diverseclassroomssuccessfully; 9. Abilitytofunctionasaneffectiveadvocateforlanguageminoritystudentsinthe schoolsandfortherightsandneedsofsecondlanguagestudentsgenerally. 4

5 5 SCHEDULINGOFCOURSES GraduatelevelTESOLcoursesarescheduledstarting4pm,andmeeteitheroncea weekortwiceaweek.tesolspecializationcoursesareordinarilynotofferedduringthe summerorwintersession.however,itisusuallypossibleforstudentstotakeelectives duringthosesessions. THEPLANNEDPROGRAM Acopyofacompletedandsignedplannedprogram,inconsultationwithand approvaloftheacademicadvisor,arefiledwiththegraduateschoolforofficialapproval. Itisthestudent sresponsibilitytocommunicatewiththeadvisorassoonaspossibleto workoutaplannedprogram.failuretosubmitanapprovedplanofstudymayresultin additionalcourseworkanddelayofgraduation,sincethegraduateadvisormayconsider astudent scourseselectionstobeinsufficient. Advisorsareavailableduringtheschoolyearwhenclassesareinsession.Iftheadvisoris unavailable,thestudentshouldconsultwiththechairpersonoftheenglishdepartment orthetesolprogramsdirector. COURSELOAD TheDepartmentofEnglishGraduateCommitteestipulatesamaximumoftwelve hoursofcourseworkinasemesterbutstronglyrecommendsamaximumloadofno morethannine.

6 PROGRAMSINTESOLATCENTRALCONNECTICUTSTATEUNIVERSITY (A)MasterofScienceinTESOL ForadmissiontotheM.S.program,3semesterhoursofstudyofasecondlanguage isrequired.studentslackingthisbackgroundmaybeadmittedprovisionally,butwillbe requiredtocompletethe3semesterhoursofsecondlanguagestudybeforegraduation fromtheprogram.non nativespeakersofenglishmayuseenglishtosatisfythis requirement.pleaseseetheccsugraduatecatalogueforcompletedetailsonadmissions, financialaid,andotherinformationnotlistedbelow. ItisexpectedthatadegreecandidatewillhavecontroloftheEnglishlanguage beyondmerecommunicativeadequacy.itshallbethejointdecisionofthetesolfaculty whetheradegreecandidate scontrolofspokenand/orwrittenenglishisappropriateto theprofession.thefacultywillrecommendvariousremediesforanycandidatedeemed deficient. PlanA:studentoptstowriteathesis(3(s.h.),ifapprovedbyfacultyinthe program,andcompletes33s.h.ofcoursework.studentregistersforonegeneral electiveandforling599thesis(graduatethesisguidelinesareavailableatthe OfficeofGraduateStudies,andatwww.ccsu.edu/grad) 2. PlanB:studentoptstotaketheComprehensiveExamandcompletes36s.h.of coursework,i.e.,studentregistersfortwogeneralelectivesandtakesthe ComprehensiveExam(ComprehensiveExamguidelinesareavailableattheOffice ofgraduatestudies) THEPLAN A THESISOPTION ThefollowingUniversityrequirementsapplytoanystudentwho,withthe approvalofhisorheradvisor,isplanningtowriteathesis:(1)wheneverpossible,the student sgraduateadvisorwillserveasthethesisadvisor.ifthestudentandtheadvisor deemitappropriate,anotherfacultymembermayserveasthesisadvisor.(2)thethesis mustbepreparedinastyleandformat(usuallyapastylefortesol)appropriatetothe disciplineandapprovedbythedeanofgraduatestudies.(3)studentsexpectingto graduateinmayshouldsubmitatypedfinaldrafttotheiradvisorsnolaterthanmarch 15.(4)Twocopiesoftheapprovedthesisandthreeadditionalcopiesofthethesis abstract(nottoexceed500words)mustbesubmittedtothegraduatedeanbyapril15 oftheyearinwhichthestudentplanstograduate;anadditionalcopyofeachmustbe submittedtotheenglishdepartmentbythesamedate.studentsareadvisedtocheckout thehandbookonthesisavailableonthegraduatewebsite. 6

7 Studentswhowishtowriteathesisareadvisedthattheyshouldpossessaspecial abilitytowritecriticalanalysisandapersonalcommitmenttothetopicselected;any studentwritingathesiswillbeexpectedtochooseatopicwhichiswithinoneofthe areasofinterestandspecializationofthetesolfaculty.althoughthedepartmentdoes notnecessarilyexpectanoriginalcontributiontothealreadyexistingbodyofsecondary materialonthesubject,itdoesrequireawellwritten,incisive,anddocumentedstudyofa clearlydefinedandfocusedtopic.theprincipaladvisor(firstreader)andasecondreader mustapprovethefinishedthesis,aworkofapproximatelysixtytoonehundredtyped pages. BeforegivingpermissionforastudenttoregisterforLING599 Thesis,the EnglishDepartmentchairpersonwillrequirethatthestudenthaveanadvisorinthe TESOLprogramwhoiswillingtosupervisetheproposedthesisproject;registrationmust becompletedduringtheregularregistrationperiodbutnolaterthantheadd/drop periodofthesemesterduringwhichthewritingofthethesiswillbegin.additionally,the studentmusthavecompleted18creditsandhavea3.00orhigher.thestudentmust submitaprospectus,signedbythethesisadvisorandthesecondreader,totheenglish DepartmentGraduateCommitteeforitsapproval.Theprospectusisaone tothree page summaryoftheproposedproject.itshouldincludeaclearstatementofwhatthestudent intendstoestablish;abriefaccountofthecurrentstateofknowledgeofthesubject, includingreferencestosomeofthemostimportantsources;adescriptionofthemethods andprocedurestobeused;andanindicationoftheorganizationofthestudyasthe studentenvisionsit. Thethesismustbecompletedwithinthesix yeartimelimitforthedegree.should itbenecessaryandwhereextenuatingcircumstanceswarrant,thethesisadvisormay requestanextensionbysubmittingapetitionthroughthedepartmentgraduate Committeetothedepartmentchairperson,whowillthenforwardtherequesttotheDean ofthegraduateschoolforconsideration.foreachsemesterwithagradeofan Incompletewhenthestudentisnotregisteredinanyothercourses,thestudentmustpay $40confirmingcontinuationintheprogramorwithdrawfromtheprogram. THEPLAN B COMPREHENSIVEEXAMINATIONOPTION Thecomprehensiveexaminationisgivenonceeachsemester;itisnotgiven duringthesummer.studentsshouldconsultthegraduatecatalogandthegraduate Schoolofficeconcerninggeneralrequirementsandtheapplicationprocedure.Theusual deadlinesforapplyingareoctober1forthefallexaminationandfebruary15forthe Springexamination.Adequatenotificationofthetimeandplaceoftheexaminationwill thenbesentbythedepartmentofenglishtoeachapplicant;ordinarily,thefall examinationwillbegiventhefirstfridayandsaturdayinnovemberandthespring examinationwillbegiventhelastfridayandsaturdayinmarch.thefridaysessionwill includequestionsontesoltheory/secondlanguageacquisition,tesolpractice,and Sociolinguistics.TheSaturdaysessionwillincludequestionsonPhonologyandSyntax. 7

8 Onsomequestionachoiceoftopicsmaybeoffered;inthatcasestudentsshouldbesure toselectonlyone. Asfarasschedulingisconcerned,studentswhoareansweringonlyonequestion willhavethefirst90minutesofthescheduledexamsessiontofinish.theywillwrite questionsofferedtoothercandidatesonfridayatthefridaysessionandquestions offeredtoothercandidatesonsaturdayatthesaturdaysession. Studentsareadvisedthatcourseworkalonemaynotfullypreparethemforthe examinationandthatnotallcourseofferingsrelatedirectlytotheexamination.bywayof preparation,acandidatemayconsultcopiesofpastexaminationsaccessibleat: or FF=rtesol+shelf&1,1 GraduateSchoolrequirementsforadmissiontotheexaminationare24semester hoursofcourseworkcompletedorinprogress,includingtheling598researchcourse, anda3.00gpa. Studentswhofailtheexaminationmaybeallowedasecondopportunitytopassit duringtheregularexaminationtimes.anapplicationforasecondattemptatthe examinationrequiresthesignaturesofthestudent sadvisorandthechairpersonofthe EnglishDepartment.Astudentwhofailsonlyonequestionmaybeallowedtorepeatthat questiononly;astudentwhofailsmorethanonequestionmustrepeattheentire examination.if,afterasecondattemptatpassingtheexamination,acandidatehasnot passedatleastfourquestions,thedepartmentmayrequirethatadditionalcoursework beundertakenbeforeanyfurtherretakesmaybeapproved.inanycase,athirdattempt requiresthesignaturesofthestudent sadvisor,thechairpersonoftheenglish Department,andtheDeanoftheGraduateSchool.
