2 Sustainable Engineering Program Program Outline Sustainable Engineering Program (SEP) in Graduate School of Engineering aims to train highly educated, internationalized engineers having a wide spectrum of technical knowledge from fundamentals to their applications. Degree recipients in this program are expected to participate as leaders in international projects, such as overseas deployments by Japanese companies and development projects by international organizations, with creative and innovative manners in the related fields. SEP consists of six special courses as fundamental disciplines in Sustainable Engineering aiming at the sustainable society and development as shown in the figure below. The student will be enrolled in a special course and educated in Integrated Doctoral Education Program, in which they are expected to study from Master s to Doctoral programs continuously for the both degrees. Chemical Engineering Special Course Outline Six special courses fall into two groups: One focuses on the technology for infrastructure development, the other on the technology for industrial development. Each course consists of several departments, which are closely related to the objectives of the course. Course outlines are given in order as below. 1. Development and Environmental Engineering Course Construction, maintenance and renewal of various infrastructures are of vital importance in every nation for developing all types of industry and creating secure and firm built environments. Infrastructure developments have been carried out as a national or an international project under various environments, such as natural, social, economic and human environments. Therefore the infrastructure development harmonized with the environments is crucial to sustainable development of society and industry. This course based on Civil and Environmental Engineering, and International Development Engineering aims its mission to train creative engineers and scientists. The graduates of this course are expected to play pivotal roles in various projects, e.g., infrastructure development, resource development and environment preservation projects, as a leading engineer or a project manager

3 2. Nuclear Engineering Course Growing attention has been again placed on nuclear energy as an ultimate measure for reduction of fossil fuel consumption and CO 2 emission. Under the circumstances of global warming and the price hike of oil, gas and coal, a number of countries have been considering the implementation of nuclear power plants. The key factor of the nuclear energy development is the development of human resources. Our original course of international nuclear engineering has been established in1993. Since then, a number of students have joined us from many different countries and graduated from our course. They are actively contributing to the development of industries and technologies in their own countries. This graduate course provides with core curriculum for nuclear reactor engineering and fuel cycle technologies and also covers extended nuclear energy, such as beam, accelerator, plasma sciences, nuclear fusion, energy and environment, and social relations. 3. Infrastructure Metallic Materials Course Steel making industries and other metalworking industries play important roles in advancing civilized society because they are producing all kinds of infrastructure metallic materials to be used for other industries such as construction, civil, mechanical, automobile and electronic industries. Therefore, metallurgical engineering is one of the important basic academic/engineering fields for industrialization of developing countries. This graduate course is, thus, designed for those who want to be a pillar of metalworking industries in developing countries. The course provides both fundamental and applied metallurgy and covers all subjects of metallurgy based on the following three categories: metal physics, metal chemistry, and materials metallurgy. 4. Mechanical and Production Engineering Course Mechanical and Production Engineering is a foundation of an advanced industrial nation and a key technology for the industries such as automobile, electrical and electronic products, precision instruments and robotics. To learn and master the ability of planning, operation and management through a research project related on the art and craft. Students will play an important role in an international corporation and public organization. 5. Information and Communication Technology Course Information and communications technology consists of a broad spectrum of technologies and is one of the most important social infrastructures supporting the industry, economy, and culture. This course is organized by the departments of electrical and electronic engineering, physical electronics, and communications and computer engineering, offering comprehensive research and education covering software and hardware technology in this field. The course covers topics in information and communications technology also including signal processing, electromagnetic waves, integrated circuits, and electron devices. We ensure that graduate students pursue challenging and valuable research on the course for professional education in the class and in the laboratories to become world-class leaders who can support this field. 6. Advanced Materials and Chemicals Processing Course The aim of this course is to cultivate scientists and engineers specializing in nanotechnology, advanced materials science and advanced chemical processing technology, disciplines which are at the core of sustainable development. The interactive and intensive curriculum, aimed at putting knowledge to work on an applicable level, is prepared by top-level departments, world-acclaimed in the field of ceramics science, organic and polymeric materials and chemical engineering. Through the course work, students are expected to become highly educated scientists and engineers possessing advanced specialized knowledge and state-of-the-art professional skills. Program WEB:

4 Postgraduate Program for Multinational Architects in Conjunction with Engineering and Urban Design 1. Program Outline Our Department of Architecture and Building Engineering at Tokyo Tech originated in 1907 as part of the curriculum at Tokyo Tech s parent institution Tokyo Technical High School (i.e., Technische Hochschule) founded in The department is therefore one of the oldest university-level architectural schools in Japan. With its one-hundred-year history it enjoys a high reputation both within and outside Japan, a number of its graduates having become renowned architects, structural engineers or academics. This International Graduate Program is solely for master s students and is administered chiefly by the Architectural Design Course of the department. (NB: all Japanese architectural degrees are conferred in the form of an engineering qualification.) 2. Course Outlines and Faculty The major concentration in this course is within architectural design (studio courses) and history and theory, with fieldwork broaching new architectural themes in an urban context. 3. Guide to Study in this Program Requisite instruction to better understand Japanese megacities and the built environment throughout Japan will be offered in seminars that also include architectural tours. Instructors will assist and encourage students seeking to master these themes, and each student will be required to obtain 34 credits over two years of study and complete either a design diploma or a written thesis in English at the end of the second year. 4. Graduation Requirements Department of Architecture and Building Engineering Master s degree 34 credits or more from the Graduate school courses. Research Courses (1) 8 credits from the Seminar Courses. Courses by Departments (1) 12 credits or more from the Departmental Courses. 2 credits or more from the Liberal Arts and General Education(G). It passes master's-thesis examination and the final examination. The minimum period of study is two years in total. Note that the above requirements are minimal and some additional requirements may be conditioned depending on the special course. 6 International Graduate Program for Bioscience and Biotechnology 1. Program Outline The Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology has launched a new program entitled International Graduate Program in Bioscience and Biotechnology (BIO-IGP) since 2012 within an integrated master s and doctoral education (IMDE), a five years curriculum. This IMDE curriculum commences every October and the classes are conducted in English. The primary aim of BIO-IGP is to foster student excellence within our various and sophisticated educational plans by exposing students to the advanced science and technology that underpins medical, environmental and informational industries and to other related areas of bioscience and biotechnology. To this end, we set up three different courses, Environmental & Chemical Biotechnology (ECB), Medical Life Sciences & Biotechnology (MLB), and Computational Life Sciences & Biotechnology (CLB). Through enhanced exchanges between international and Japanese students, we will bring out high-level researchers and engineers who will flourish as national and global leaders. 2. Graduation Requirements [Master s degree] (1) Students must acquire at least 30 credits from the following subjects groups: Research Subjects (M), Common Subjects (M), Course Subjects in the three courses, Communication Skill Subjects, and Liberal Arts and General Education (G). Subjects of the other programs in the Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology can be included in the above mentioned 30 credits. The 30 credits required must include the following credits: Four compulsory credits of IGP Seminars (I-IV) from the Research Subjects (M) in their own department. (Take one of these subjects (each one credit) in each semester.) Eighteen credits from Common Subjects (M) and the Course Subjects for their own course, which must include the six compulsory credits from Common Subjects (M) and four credits from the Course Subjects for their own course. Two credits from the Course Subjects for the other two courses that they do not belong to. Two credits from Communication Skill Subjects and Liberal Arts and General Education (G). (2) With 30 credits acquired, students can file for a master s degree usually in the first two years. Then they are supposed to submit a master thesis, conduct final presentation on their master thesis, and undergo the final examination and thesis evaluation. (3) In this IMDE, students qualified for a master s degree must take a qualifying examination for the doctoral course immediately after the thesis evaluation

7 [Doctoral degree] Students must satisfy the following requirements to obtain a Doctoral degree: (1) One credit of IGP Off-Campus Training *. *A research experience for at least a week in another research institution in Japan. (2) Six credits of IGP Seminars (V-X) from the Research Subjects (D) in their own department. (Take one of these subjects (each one credit) in each semester.) (3) Conduct of qualifying presentation on their mid-term progress every year. (4) Submission of doctoral thesis, conduct of final presentation on their thesis and the final oral examination to obtain a doctoral degree. 8 TOKYO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY International Program for Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (IPISE) Japan has led the world in science and high-tech industry and it is to be expected that it offers a high level of graduate studies in science and engineering. Interdisciplinary knowledge and insights, which are free from traditional disciplines, are needed to overcome today s problems, especially regarding the environment and energy. The solutions to these challenging problems are not presented in textbooks. The IPISE program provides an adequate environment needed for promoting and training the capabilities of human resources to find solutions to these global problems. IPISE is an integrated doctoral program for 5 years (standard). It has three courses: materials science, environment and energy, and information systems. Through interdisciplinary education and research, we aim to develop students who can think globally and who will have strong problem-solving capabilities. IPISE is backed by the Japanese government with 12 MEXT scholarships for international students. The first step towards international understanding is to bring students from different countries together and allow them to get to know each other's culture and way of thinking, as well as respect it. To realize this, IPISE builds an environment in which students from various countries (culturally and economically diverse) learn together. A program running in parallel with IPISE is organized for Japanese students. The collaborative learning environment provides a good opportunity for students to acquire a global perspective and deepen their insights, which are necessary for studying today's science and technology developments in depth

IPISE includes lectures on "Technical Writing" and "Technical Discussion," and informal research meetings as well as a science cafe, which aim to develop discussion and debate skills. We also provide a platform where the foreign and Japanese students study together. In addition, we provide lectures on Japanese society and culture, and international exchange. Based on the individual plan of study that is developed for each student in consultation with his/her supervisor or tutor, the IPISE students will take those credits required for completion of their degree. Each student will have two supervisors who will guide the student in his/her academics and research while supporting the student in developing an appropriate career track after graduation. The IPISE program also provides an opportunity for students to learn about the similarities and differences in cultural institutions and social environments through experiencing a mini-internship at a company or research institute. 13 International Graduate Program for Global Leaders on Engineering Systems with Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Studies (IGP-GLES) Program Outline Our program aims to bring up future global leaders in such various fields as policy making, national administration, legal institutes, industry, education, and academic research. We accept excellent students from all over the world, and bring them up to be of capability and skills required to solve essential problems on engineering systems with harmonization among human, organizations, societies, cultures, and science and technology. In order to achieve our goals, we provide courses on knowledge of human, organizations, societies, cultures, science and technology, and Japanese style management technologies, which have obtained the world s respects and reputations. Course Outlines and Faculty Subjects in the program are offered by the faculties of the departments below in Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology, utilizing strong and abundant resources related not only to engineering systems but also humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies. In addition, subjects on skills for academic research and knowledge of Japanese language and life will be also offered so as to educate students who will work as a bridge between Japan and their own countries. 15 International Program on Earthquake Engineering Program Outline The Earthquake Engineering Program (EEP) will produce highly skilled engineers and researchers who will make significant contributions to earthquake hazard mitigation world-wide. The students of International Graduate Program (A) will be educated in Integrated Doctoral Education Program, in which they are expected to study from Master's to Doctoral programs continuously for both degrees. A student enrolled in the Integrated Doctoral Education Program belongs to one of the six departments engaged in the program. Such students are expected to receive doctoral degrees within 4 years. Departments & Faculty Members 30 professors of five departments (Dept. of Architecture and Building Engineering, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dept. of Built Environment, Dept. of Environmental Science and Technology, and Dept. of Mechanical and Environmental Informatics) are involved in the EEP. Course Curriculum All courses are systematically classified from Category-0 to Category-V as shown in the figure. In particular, the courses in Category-IV are intended to diversify its educational mission for Japanese students, foreign students, and professionals, through course exercises, practical training and participation in international workshops and research collaborations with other institutions.
