1 College of Humanities and Social Sciences These scholarships have been established to assist students majoring in one of the departments of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Unless otherwise indicated, more information and application forms can be obtained in the Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Humanities 211. Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May. Nancy Fitch Women s History Award Amount: Varies Established by: This scholarship was established by Dr. Nancy E. Fitch, a professor of European history, who wishes to encourage students to study women s history by using new teaching technologies. Open to: This scholarship is open to any CSUF undergraduate or graduate student in any discipline or department. Criteria: Interest in women s history Academic achievement Financial need Application Procedure: 1) Complete the departmental application available in H-815F (preferred typed); 2) Detail your interest in women s history and describe your activities relating to women s history on the departmental application; 3) Provide two letters of recommendation from two CSUF faculty members of any discipline or department; and 4) Submit application materials to H-815F. Application Deadline: March 8 Leon and Annette Gilbert Study Abroad Scholarship Amount: $500 (two awards) Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Dr. Leon Gilbert and his wife Annette to assist students in meeting their educational expenses in a student program. Dr. Gilbert is a Professor Emeritus from the Modern Languages & Literature department. The recipients will be selected by a Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) scholarship committee. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing HSS students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree and have been accepted to a California State University sponsored study abroad program.

2 Criteria: 2.5 GPA the certification; and 2) Submit application to College of Humanities and Social Sciences, H-211, Dean s Office Scholarship Committee. Application Deadline: September 27 (for spring) and March 14 (for summer) Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Life Achievement Awards Amount: $500 (two awards) Established by: This scholarship is funded by contributions from Humanities and Social Sciences alumni. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing HSS students who have returned to school after raising a family, establishing a career, or having to overcome other personal obstacles. Criteria: Scholastic achievement Financial need Personal achievements answer all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare a statement that addresses your personal situation that led to your return to school; and 3) Submit application to College of Humanities and Social Sciences, H-211, Dean s Office Scholarship Committee. Application Deadline: September 27 and March 5 International Leadership Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This scholarship was established by the Alumni Association and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) to assist students in meeting educational expenses while studying in a California State University (CSU) sponsored Study Abroad program. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. Open to: This scholarship is open to currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at Cal State Fullerton s College of HSS who have been accepted to a CSU sponsored Study Abroad program. Criteria: 2.5 GPA International leadership activities answer all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Write a word, typed statement that addresses, either: a) your current leadership activities which promote international understanding, or b) how you will use your study

3 abroad experience as preparation for future international leadership activities; and 3) Submit application materials to H-211, Dean s Office Scholarship Committee. Application Deadline: March 14 Schweitzer First Quarter Fund Scholarship Amount: $500 (two awards) Established by: This scholarship is awarded annually and is funded by contributions from Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) graduating students and alumni through the First Quarter Fund. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing HSS students. Criteria: Scholastic achievement Financial need the certification; 2) Submit application to College of Humanities and Social Sciences, H-211, Dean s Office Scholarship Committee. Application Deadline: March 5 Don A. Schweitzer Memorial Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences Amount: $800 (and name on perpetual plaque) Established by: This scholarship was established in the fall of 1993 to honor the memory of Vice President Don A. Schweitzer. Dr. Schweitzer joined the CSUF faculty in 1969 as a professor in the Psychology department. He held positions as Dean and Vice President, Academic Affairs. Professor Schweitzer demonstrated a lifelong dedication to excellence in higher education. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time upper division CSUF students with a major in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Criteria: 3.0 GPA Leadership Co-curricular activities the certification; and 2) Submit application to College of Humanities and Social Sciences, H-211, Dean s Office Scholarship Committee. Application Deadline: March 5 Jorice Maag Local History Scholarship

4 Amount: $1000 Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum to encourage the study of California history with preference given to those interested in local history. History is defined as the study of topics relating to the immediate area of the campus, Orange County and the surrounding areas, or of persons and institutions in these areas engaging in activities that promote, conserve and/or exhibit such history. The scholarship may not be awarded more than twice to the same individual. Open to: This scholarship is open to full-time continuing upper division or graduate students pursuing topics related to California history. Criteria: GPA Appropriateness of study/project Student and community activities Financial need the certification; 2) Prepare a letter of interest that includes a statement of future goals; 3) Obtain a copy of all college transcripts; 4) Prepare a statement of financial need; 5) Obtain two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a CSUF faculty member; and 6) Submit application packet to Friends of Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton Arboretum, (657) Application Deadline: March 2 Afro-Ethnic Studies Department of Afro-Ethnic Studies Student Scholarships Amount: Varies Established by: Department of Afro-Ethnic Studies established two scholarships both of which honors students majoring in Afro-Ethnic Studies. One scholarship provides recognition for academic excellence and merit. A second scholarship recognizes students for service to the department of Afro-Ethnic Studies. Open to: This scholarship is open to graduating Afro-Ethnic Studies major students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree with future goals to attain a graduate degree. Criteria: 2.8 GPA Department of Afro-Ethnic Studies major Plans to pursue a graduate degree Service to department Application Procedures: 1) Students will initially be identified by reviewing the university list of majors that meet department criteria; 2) Student is to complete an application form that can be obtained from the Department of Afro-Ethnic Studies, H-314; 3) Provide one letter of support from an Afro- Ethnic Studies faculty member attesting to your academic success and service contributions; and 4) Submit all materials to the Department of Afro-Ethnic Studies, H-314.

5 Application Deadline: March 2 American Studies Margarete Liebe Sekhon Graduate Scholarship Amount: $1,000 Established by: This scholarship was created by a generous donation from her daughter, Sharon Sekhon, to honor the memory of her mother, Margarete Liebe Sekhon. Open to: This scholarship is open to new graduate students in American Studies. Criteria: Academic achievement Statement Application Procedures: 1) Complete the SA application at the certification; 2) Write a statement of purpose; and 3) Submit application and statement of purpose to the American Studies Department, UH-313, (657) Application Deadline: February 1 David Jon Vaca Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship in American Studies Amount: $500 (two awards one in fall and one in spring) Established by: This scholarship was established by the John and Marietta Vaca family in 1984 in memory of their son and is awarded each semester. Open to: This scholarship is awarded in fall and spring and is open to continuing undergraduate American Studies majors. Criteria: Scholastic achievement Financial need Application Procedure: 1) Complete the application which includes a statement of financial need, available in the American Studies Department, UH-313, (657) ; and 2) Submit the application to UH-313. 6 Established by: This award was established in 1994 by American Studies Alumni to honor Dr. Earl James Weaver, the department s co-founder and first emeritus professor. A three-member faculty committee reviews the papers and makes the award each spring semester. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing American Studies graduate students. Criteria: Scholastic achievement Essay written for class Application Procedure: 1) Complete the separate application, available in the American Studies Department, UH-313, (657) ; 2) Attach an essay that was written for a CSUF class during the previous spring, summer or fall semester; and 3) Submit application materials to UH-313. Application Deadline: Varies Anthropology Jenkins-Douglas-Gardner Award Amount: up to $1,000 Established by: This award commemorates three promising young archeologists, Ronald Douglas, Bruce Jenkins and Edward Gardner, whose lives were cut short in a tragic plane crash in 1981 while returning from the field. Open to: This award is open to new and continuing Anthropology major or minor students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. Application Deadline: April 18 Sadovszky International Research Award (ISTOR) Amount: up to $1,000

7 Established by: This award was established to recognize Anthropology students who have done, or propose to do, anthropological research outside of the United States. It is named after its founder, the late Professor Otto Von Sadovszky, a former Anthropology department faculty member who encouraged student research at all levels. Application Deadline: April 18 Wallenberg Peace Award Amount: up to $800 Established by: This award recognizes student work that promotes peace or examines conflict and conflict resolution, either globally or in the community. 8 Amount: $2,500 per recipient Established by: This award, created in memory of Ralph and Marion Marshall, commemorates their affection and enthusiasm for archeological curation. Open to: The award will be made available to new and continuing Anthropology undergraduate and graduate students each semester who demonstrate a commitment to the curation of archeological artifacts. Criteria: The recipients will work closely with a faculty advisor and learn appropriate methods of archaeological curation either in the laboratory or via field work. Award recipients must commit to working on archaeological curation projects as specified by the advisor. Application Deadline: November 1 (for Spring semester), March 1 (for Fall semester) Asian American Studies Program Asian American and Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Scholarship Amount: Varies pending funding. Award winners will be recognized at the AAPIFSA reception at the President s House on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 6:30-8:00 PM. Winners names also will appear in the program of the Ethnic Studies Graduation Commencement Ceremony. Established by: The Asian American and Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Scholarship was established by Titan Shops (administered through the Asian American Studies Program -ASAM). The scholarship recognizes students who have successfully integrated civic engagement with Asian American and Pacific Islander communities into their on-campus learning experiences. Open to: CSUF ASAM majors or minors with sophomore or junior status who have incorporated civic engagement with Asian American and Pacific Islander communities into their on-campus learning experiences. Professor Craig Ihara was the founding Asian American Studies Program Coordinator for ten years. 10 Established by: This award was established by Robert and Althea McLaren to recognize and honor outstanding written essays. Open to: This award is open to Comparative Religion majors and minors (current students or graduates) who have written an essay for a Comparative Religion course in the past calendar year. Criteria: Quality of essay, including its depth of analysis, coherence of style, and effective use of religious studies methodologies. Usual length is seven or more pages. Application Procedure: 1) Submit a paper copy of the essay to the Department of Comparative Religion office, UH-313, and send an electronic copy of the paper to the Chair of the department. Application Deadline: March 15 Donald Gard Award Amount: $150 Open to: This award is open to non-graduating Religious Studies majors in their junior or senior year of study. Established by: This award was established by the Department of Comparative Religion to honor Dr. Donald Gard by recognizing outstanding student academic achievement and potential. Application Deadline: March 15 James Parkes- Morton Fierman Award Amount: $150 Established by: This award was established by the Department of Comparative Religion to honor Dr. James Parkes and Dr. Morton Fierman by recognizing students with exemplary records of service to the department and university. 11 certification; and 2) Submit the application to the Chair of the Department of Comparative Religion, UH Application Deadline: March 15 Islamic Studies Scholarship Amount: $1000 each (up to two scholarships) Established by: This award was established by the Department of Comparative Religion and is funded by the Department's Islamic Studies Endowment. Open to: This award is open to current students with a declared minor in Islamic Studies. Past recipients are ineligible to apply. Application Deadline: March 15 Criminal Justice Dan Byrnes Scholarship Amount: $500 $1,000 Established by: This award was created by his family and friends to honor the memory of Dan Byrnes, former chief of Public Safety at Cal State Fullerton. Preference for the scholarship is given to criminal justice, political science or public administration majors. Open to: This award is open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student who plans a career as a sworn officer in law enforcement and who will be enrolled full-time at CSUF for the next academic year. Past recipients are ineligible to apply. 12 English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics Dream Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by faculty and staff members of the Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics to recognize and honor students who are AB 540 status and have demonstrated financial need. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing students who are pursuing an undergraduate or a graduate degree in English, Comparative Literature, or Linguistics. Criteria: 2.0 minimum GPA Financial need Application Procedure: 1) Complete the Scholarship and Award application at answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Write a personal statement of which addresses the need for the scholarship; 3) Provide two letters of recommendation from CSUF faculty members; 4) Provide a copy of your unofficial transcript; and 5) Submit completed application and materials to the department office, UH-323 Application Deadline: April 8 Kimberly Anne Holloway Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This award was established by Hilda L. and Daniel C. Holloway in memory of their daughter, Kimberly Anne Holloway, 2002, a graduate of the Department of English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics. The scholarship will recognize a student for academic excellence and assist the winner to complete a baccalaureate degree in English, comparative literature or linguistics. Open to: This scholarship is open to any currently enrolled undergraduate student who intends to receive a baccalaureate degree in English, Comparative Literature or Linguistics. Criteria: 3.25 GPA Financial need the certification; 2) Provide two letters of recommendation, at least one letter must be from a member of the faculty at Cal State Fullerton; and 3) Submit application material to Kimberly Anne Holloway Scholarship, Department of English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics, UH-323.

13 Application Deadline: April 8 JEVID Scholarship in English Amount: Varies Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Dana Praitis via the Omaha Community Foundation. Open to: This scholarship is open to students who meet the following criteria: 1) are enrolled as an undergraduate student at California State University, Fullerton; 2)citizen of the United States; 3) a student majoring in English, Comparative Literature or Linguistics maintaining a 2.0 or above GPA; and 4)a student meeting one or more of the following criteria: demonstrated financial need, including, but not limited, to an individual who is the first in his/her family to attend college, or an individual who is a single parent and/or head of household, or an individual from a group underrepresented in higher education.(see Application Procedure Below) Criteria: 2.0 or above GPA Demonstrated financial need the certification; 2) Submit a statement by the student in the form of a letter that shall include: a) a paragraph which identifies the student s status in terms of the major, number of units completed in the major, and the student s GPA, b)a paragraph which identifies the student s current interests in English and plans for the future, c) a paragraph which addresses the student s situation in regard to need; 3)Submit at least one letter of support from a faculty member; 4) a copy of the student s CSUF transcripts; 5) Submit completed application to the Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics UH-323 Application Deadline: April 8 Mary Kay Crouch Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Mary Kay Crouch to support the efforts of graduate students in the CSUF English MA program who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing students who are pursuing a Masters degree in English. Criteria: 3.75 minimum GPA Application Procedure: 1) Complete the Scholarship and Award application at answering all 7 questions, and sign

14 the certification; 2) Write a personal statement based on academic success; 3) Provide two letters of recommendation from CSUF faculty members; 4) Provide a copy of your unofficial transcript; and 5) Submit completed application and materials to the department office, UH-323. Application Deadline: April 8 Gerontology Mary Lois Ayres Scholarship in Gerontology Amount: $1,000 to $1,500 Established by: This scholarship was established by Charles and Karen Ayres in memory of Mary Lois Ayres to provide support to students who are pursuing careers in the field of aging or gerontology. Open to: This scholarship is open to junior/senior students with a minor or concentration in gerontology or to a first year graduate student who has been accepted into the M.S. Gerontology Degree Program. Criteria: Academic achievement Professional promise Demonstrated interest in a career in gerontology the certification; 2) Provide a copy of your academic transcript with your gerontology course numbers and grades received highlighted, a TDA (Titan Degree Audit) can be obtained from TITAN Online; 3) Prepare a typed essay of approximately 250 words describing your interest and potential for a career in gerontology; 4) Obtain two letters of recommendation (at least one letter from a CSUF faculty member); and 5) Submit application materials to RGC-8, (657) or (657) Application Deadline: April 6 OLLI Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Gerontology Amount: $500 Established by: This award was established by OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) to provide financial support for a graduating M.S. Gerontology student. Open to: This scholarship is open to an M.S. Gerontology candidate graduating in spring or has graduated the preceding summer or fall semester. Criteria: 3.5 GPA Quality and content of essay Membership in the Student Association for Gerontology Education (SAGE) or Sigma Phi Omega Honor Society

15 the certification; 2) Provide a copy of your academic transcript with your gerontology course numbers and grades received highlighted--a TDA(Titan Degree Audit) can be obtained from TITAN Online; 3) Prepare a typed essay of approximately 250 words describing what you plan to do with your M.S. degree in gerontology and describe your community service activities; 4) Obtain two letters of recommendation (at least one letter from a CSUF faculty member); and 5) Submit application materials to RGC-8, (657) or (657) Application Deadline: April 6 Beverly and Arnold Miller University Scholarship in Gerontology Amount: $1,000 for students enrolled in 6-8 units and $1,500 for students enrolled in 9 or more units (up to 8 awards) Established by: This scholarship is an endowed program established by Beverly and Arnold Miller to provide support to students who are pursuing careers in Gerontology. Awards are given annually with the opportunity to be renewed with demonstrated recipient accomplishments. Finalists may be asked to participate in an interview. Open to: This scholarship is open to students studying in the field of aging and related disciplines, learning about all aspects of aging, and who are pursuing careers to work with, for, and on behalf of older adults. Eligibility is open to students studying within disciplines supporting such programs within College of Humanities and Social Science and the College of Health and Human Development. Criteria: Academic Achievement Professional Promise Demonstrated interest in a career in adult health/wellness or gerontology. the certification; 2) Include with the application a list of Gerontology related courses taken and grades received highlighted; 3) Prepare a typed essay of approximately 250 words describing interest and potential for a career in Gerontology; 4) Obtain two letters of recommendation (at least one letter from a CSUF faculty member); and 5) Submit application and materials to the Gerontology Academic Program, RGC-8 (657) or (657) Application Deadline: April 6 Donna and Kirt Spradlin Scholarship in Gerontology Amount: $1,000 to $1,500 Established by: This scholarship was established by Donna and Kirt Spradlin to provide financial support for graduate students who have an interest in the field of aging or gerontology and a student in the center for successful aging.

16 Open to: This scholarship is open to graduate students who have been accepted into the M.S. Gerontology Degree program. For purposes of this scholarship, a reentry student is one who dropped out of or postponed undergraduate education for at least one full academic year.
