1 CREATING A BACK-UP ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4.5 Windows 7 This process saves an image of the entire system, which includes all operating system files, settings, personal files, and any installed software to a Back Up file. This file can be used at a later date when the system or software has errors, or if the hard drive has been infected with malware such as Viruses or Spyware. 1) Click Start At the top of this menu, Rescue and Recovery will be listed. 2) When this program is opened, a window will appear with two buttons. Restore and BackUp Now 3) Click on the Back Up Now button, and immediately the process will begin. This may take about an hour to complete. The laptop must be plugged in to power for the entire BackUp process. **TIPS: Create a preliminary Back Up file using Rescue and Recovery PRIOR to: o Installing any software, such as printer software or messengers, etc.; o Transferring any previously saved files (such as Documents, Pictures, or Music files) to the local hard drive. Once an initial Back Up has been created: o Create an additional Back Up after adding any files, and installing all of the software that are used on a regular basis (printer/camera software, etc). Always keep additional copies of any important files and save them in an alternate location: o Save copies of any Documents, Pictures, Music files, to a location such as a USB Key, External Hard drive, DVD, or virtual storage (Such as OneDrive, icloud, Google Drive, DropBox, etc). 2 a. OPTIONAL STEP: The location of the Back Up file can also be changed from the Local Hard Drive (C:) to an external memory space, such as a USB Hard Drive (or External Hard Drive). To do this, click on the Arrow below the Back Up button. b. Select the location to save the Back Up file to. Creating this type of a file on external media on a regular basis will be beneficial in the event that the laptop becomes lost, stolen, or if any personal data/software is lost or irretrievable as a result of physical failure on the hard drive. 3 RESTORING THE SYSTEM SECTION A: Restoring System While Logged In: This process returns the system to a previously saved state, thereby eliminating any System or Software errors, or Malware such as Viruses, Spyware, and Pop Ups. 1) Open the Rescue & Recovery Software If system errors occur, preventing the computer, from loading to the sign in screen: (See SECTION B) 2) Click on the Restore Button. 3) A Rescue and Recovery Restore window will come up with two different restore options: Quick Restore, or Full Restore. a. Quick Restore will repair corrupt system or application files. This is recommended when receiving software errors or complications after installing or uninstalling a program, or if Windows notifies you that there are missing or corrupt system files. This restores only Windows and application files to the backed-up state. Any personal data or files are preserved. *This option will ONLY become enabled if a backup file has ever been created.* b. Full Restore will restore the entire system back to the exact state that it was in at the date and time that the chosen backup was performed. If it is possible that the system may be infected with a Virus or Spyware, then performing a Full Restore is recommended. *Selecting a Full Restore will REMOVE ALL FILES AND PROGRAMS that were installed on the laptop after the date that the Back Up file was created.* Fall2014 Rescue and Recovery 4.5 Guide Page 3 of 6

4 Please be sure to save all important files to a secondary location, such as a USB, the SJU OneDrive, an external hard drive, CD, or DVD. All applications that were installed after the selected backup was created will need to be reinstalled. Some settings, such as wireless network connections and printer settings, may also need to be reconfigured. 4) A window will appear displaying a list of all performed Back Ups. a. If a Back Up was created after receiving the laptop, it will be listed in the window according to the date and time that it was created. b. If a BackUp was performed, after opting to change the saved location to an External location, such as a USB drive or DVD (as displayed on page 2), please make sure that the external drive is connected, or DVD is inserted, prior to opening the program. ** If there are no BackUps listed, please contact the Laptop Support Center for further assistance.** 5) Select a Back Up file: Choose a BackUp that has a creation date prior to the time that the computer began to behave abnormally, or became infected by a virus or spyware. Before Proceeding: **Please be sure that all important files are saved to a secondary location, such as the SJU OneDrive, USB Drive, external hard drive, or DVD.** 6) Then, click the RESTORE button at the bottom of the window. Once the restoration process begins, it may take awhile to complete, depending on how large the Back Up file was. 7) Once completed the system will reboot on its own. DO NOT shut it off, or manually force it to restart. a. Once the Restore is complete, the login will be the same username and password that was used at the time that the BackUp file was created. 5 SECTION B: Restoring your system, Outside of Windows: Perform this operation when unable to login to the system, such as when receiving a Blue Screen, System Error screen, or if there is malware that may be disabling any system restore features to work. Depending on the Lenovo model, a) On T61, X200, X230, T410, T420, and T430 models, locate the ThinkVantage key in the upper left corner of the keyboard. b) On Edge, E420, E430, and T440p models, Locate the ENTER key 1. After the laptop is powered on, the following image will display. Press the button designated for the model, as soon as the image appears. 2. If pressed in time, prior to Windows starting, the following screens will appear: 3. When the software has finished initializing, a prompt will appear asking to accept the license agreement, by clicking CONTINUE. Rescue and restore options are then presented for performing: QUICK RESTORE, FULL RESTORE, and RESCUE FILES. Fall2014 Rescue and Recovery 4.5 Guide Page 5 of 6

RESCUE FILES: If there are documents that have not been saved to a different location (such as a USB Drive), this feature may be used to retrieve them prior to performing a Restore. ***In order for the software to recognize a USB Drive, make sure that it is connected prior to pressing the ThinkVantage button to load the software. *** b. QUICK RESTORE: (Please see description listed in Section 3A on Page 3.) Once this is chosen, the process will begin. c. FULL RESTORE: (Please see description listed in Section 3B on Page 3.) i. Once this option is selected, the option to Rescue Files is presented if needed. Click Continue to proceed to performing a Full Restore. ii. A list of all backups that have been performed will appear arranged according to date and time. **If you have saved a previous backup file from rescue and recovery to a USB drive, make sure that the USB drive is connected to the computer prior to turning it on to begin the Rescue and Recovery process.** iii. A message will appear to warn against powering off during this process. Make sure that the power cable is connected before proceeding. (If the laptop loses power during the restore process, the backup will become corrupt and unable to complete the process.) Click OK, to begin the restore process. iv. This process can take some time, depending on how large the backup file was. Once it is complete, the computer will reboot by itself, and proceed to the login screen.
