1 Camtasia Video Part Three Calendar-driven Online Classes Slide 1: Title Slide Part three Calendar-driven Online Classes Presented by the Distance Learning Department, Middlesex Community College, Middletown, CT Slide 2 In this video, we will discuss what you can expect when taking a Calendar-driven online class at Middlesex Community College. Slide 3 Middlesex Community College uses Blackboard Vista in our online classes. (Blackboard Vista logo fades in). You will logon to your Blackboard Vista course using the MyCommNet portal web site. (MyCommNet logo fades in.) Slide 4 This is the MyCommNet log in page. It is available at Slide 5 Some of our online classes are calendar-driven with emphasis on weekly assignments, projects and assessments. Classes in Computer Science, Math and Business tend to follow this model. Slide 6 Online classes use many tools such as: Welcome Syllabus Course Outline Calendar Assignments & Assessments just to name a few Slide 7 Let s take a closer look at the homepage of a Calendar-driven course. Slide 12 The Syllabus contains details about major elements of the course such as: Readings, Assignments Discussions, Projects, and Assessments. Slide 13 The Syllabus in a calendar-driven class often contains the professor s evaluation methods, general information on the class, college policies, and information on the material you will cover. Slide 18 Often times, the Syllabus will include or be paired with a Course Outline that has due dates and requirements for class work for the entire semester. Slide 21 Though the Syllabus may include specifics, it is best to always view the Calendar in these classes. This is where your readings, assignments, and deadlines are posted. Slide 22 Often times you can view the start and end dates for specific reading, projects, tests, and assignments. Slide 23 The Calendar is constantly being updated to reflect the most current information, so it s important that you keep going back to check for new items. Slide 24 The Calendar tool in the left menu bar will sometimes have a little green star next to it. This will let you know that your instructor has posted new Calendar entries. 4 Slide 30 The Assignments module breaks down, into weeks or units, the material you are expected to cover and the requirements you are to complete during a specified time period. Third arrow appears, points to Submit button and says: Click Submit button when you are done. Slide 34 Often times, you will use a specific software program to complete these Assignments. Slide 35 For example, in the Spreadsheets class, you will do Excel-based projects; in the Database class, you will do Access-based projects; and in the Intermediate Algebra course, you will use a math program called Course Compass to complete projects. Slide 36 It is important that you have the necessary software programs for your online class. Make sure to carefully read your Read Me, Syllabus, and Course Outline files to find out what specific software you will need. Slide 37 Exams, tests and quizzes are known as Assessments in Blackboard Vista. Some courses have multiple choice quizzes or essay tests. Other courses will have project-based assessments.
