1 STARK STATE COLLEGE Dear Prospective Nursing Applicant Evening/Weekend Program: Thank you for inquiring about the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at Stark State College (SSC). Please note that all information is subject to change as needed to assure a high quality program. Only one class of students per year is admitted. Students begin the nursing sequence in the Fall Semester of the year that they are accepted to start the Nursing Program. The nursing sequence is published in the College Catalog and the Stark State College website. Due to the increased interest and application to the nursing program, an acceptance list has been established. All students who meet the admission requirements and have a completed application on file are assigned to the first space available in an upcoming class. Should space become available earlier, the accepted applicant will be notified. The following steps are strongly recommended for all students considering the Nursing Program: 1. Refer to college website, Future Students tab, and then the Apply for Admissions link. Follow the 5 steps for application to the college and how to schedule an appointment for the COMPASS assessment. 2. Make an appointment with a SSC Academic Advisor if you are new to the College. Call (330) or STARK. 3. For all returning pre-nursing students, check MyStarkState for your faculty advisor and contact the advisor for an appointment. 4. The COMPASS test will help determine whether or not you need to take developmental courses BEFORE you begin to enroll in prerequisite or non-technical courses in the nursing curriculum. Discuss enrollment of courses with the SSC Academic Advisor. 5. Health sciences students are encouraged to complete the course Student Success Seminar (HTH101) during the first semester at Stark State College. 6. It is important to be aware of essential functions required of nurses in the performance of day-to-day role responsibilities to provide for the health and safety of patients. See attachment regarding essential functions necessary in the role of nursing student. Please refer to the admission requirements and process for applying to the Nursing Program on pages 2, 3, and 6. I look forward to your continuing interest in the nursing profession and the educational program at Stark State College. Sincerely, Bette Oplinger, MSN, RN Interim Department Chair/Director of Nursing Students are required to follow the program curriculum in effect when they begin taking technical courses, not when students are accepted to the College or program. SSC is committed to equal opportunity for all and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, national origin, military status, pregnancy, disability, age, genetic information, or sexual orientation. SSC strives to enroll a diverse representation of students within the Health Sciences programs. Members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. 2 Admission Process 1. Submit a Stark State College application (new SSC students only) and take the SSC COMPASS Assessment. ACT scores are accepted in place of SSC COMPASS if achieved within the last two calendar years. Refer to the College Admissions Office for evaluation of scores. 2. Complete any prescribed developmental courses as determined by the COMPASS Assessment or ACT Test results. 3. Submit to the Academic Records Office: Official copy of high school transcripts and/or GED certificate. Official college transcripts of any college attended. 4. Health sciences students are encouraged to complete the course Student Success Seminar (HTH101) during the first semester at Stark State College. 5. Attend a mandatory orientation meeting regarding admission requirements, application process and to obtain an application to the nursing program. 6. Be a high school GPA of 3.0 or better within the last five years; or have obtained a GED certificate within the last five years; or a college GPA of 3.0 or better in 7 hours or more of course work. The most recent transcript will be used to evaluate to GPA. 7. Complete prerequisite courses: one year of high school chemistry and biology with a grade of B or better within the past five years; or complete BIO101 and CHM101 with a grade of B or better within 2 attempts at Stark State College including withdrawals; or show equivalency. 8. A minimum of one (1) month and no longer than one (1) year prior to placing an application, the applicant must obtain BCII and FBI background checks through SSC s Security Department. 9. After completing steps 1-8 above, submit a rolling admission application obtained only at the mandatory orientation meeting for the Nursing Program, to the Academic Records Office (Registration Office). 10. Register for the date you wish to take the PAX-RN test. Obtain information for the PAX-RN test on the nursing website. Registration for the PAX-RN test can be done at any point in the application process. However, it is strongly recommended that developmental and prerequisite courses listed in step 7 be completed before the PAX test is taken. Applicants must score at the 60th percentile or higher on the PAX- RN test to be eligible for admission. If the applicant scores below the 60th percentile, she/he will not be eligible to retake the PAX-RN for 6 months. A student may take the PAX-RN test only twice in a calendar year. PAX-RN test scores are valid for three (3) years. Once all of the admission requirements have been met and a complete application is received, a letter of acceptance with projected starting date will be mailed to the applicant. Letters will be mailed on a regular basis. Since a waiting period is expected, applicants are encouraged to submit an application as soon as admission requirements are completed to reserve a space. Any of the non-nursing courses can be completed while waiting to enter the nursing course sequence. 11. Students accepted into the Nursing Program must remain in continuous good standing (GPA of 2.5) for final enrollment into the Nursing Program. It must be understood by all students accepted into the Nursing Program that a grade of C or better must be achieved in all nursing and non-nursing courses in the Nursing curriculum. Grades of C - or below cannot be used toward course work required for graduation. 12. Complete the following courses prior to June 1 st of the admitting year with a grade of "C" or better: BIO 121 Anatomy & Physiology I BIO 122 Anatomy & Physiology II CHM 121 General, Organic & Biological Chemistry I CHM 122 General, Organic & Biological Chemistry II Stark State College 6200 Frank Avenue NW North Canton, OH STARK ( The College reserves the right to change this process at any time. 3 Additional Considerations Felony and Misdemeanor Convictions According to Section of the Ohio Revised Code, nursing students are responsible for informing the department chair/director of nursing, early and during the program, of any misdemeanor or felony convictions so that students may be informed of the steps the Ohio Board of Nursing will take before considering their application to sit for the licensing examination. According to Ohio HB327, anyone previously convicted of, pleaded guilty to, or had a judicial finding of guilt for an egregious felony will be precluded from initial licensure. Egregious felonies are aggravated murder, murder, voluntary manslaughter, felonious assault, kidnapping, rape, sexual battery, gross sexual imposition, aggravated arson, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. Any student who has been convicted of an egregious felony will not be admitted to the nursing program. Any student who is convicted of an egregious felony while enrolled in the nursing program will be dismissed and not be readmitted. Criminal Background Checks If you have been convicted of certain felonies or misdemeanors, you may be refused placement at clinical/practicum site. You must complete placements at clinical/practicum sites in order to obtain your degree in certain programs. Also, certain convictions may make you ineligible to take the licensure or certification examinations. Therefore, in order to guide your program decision at Stark State, both FBI and BCI Criminal Background checks must be done prior to application to a health program through the Stark State Security Office located on the first floor of the S Building. You will receive the results of the background checks in the mail along with a letter stating whether you may be refused placement at clinical/practicum sites or may be ineligible for licensure in the future. Background checks may have to be repeated upon program entry if more than a year has passed since the original background check, or unless there is an indication that the applicant s background has changed. Please refer to the Health Sciences landing page at for a list of potential disqualifying offenses for work and licensure in health programs. Criminal background checks will be required for all students prior to application to a Health Sciences program. It is a Health Sciences Division policy to refer to various sections of the Ohio Law & Regulations for certification and licensure boards that persons convicted of certain felonies or misdemeanors may wish not to pursue health programs at Stark State College because that person may not be able to take the licensure or certification examinations, may be refused acceptance of placement by the clinical/practicum sites, or may have restrictions placed on their ability to practice. For more information, refer to Ohio Revised Code Section or contact the applicable licensure/certification board. (i.e. perform vital signs, CPR, drawing up and giving injections, hanging IV s and tube feedings). Skills of observation: accurate visual, auditory and tactile observation of patients (i.e. listening to breath and heart sounds, discriminating subtle changes in color, hearing alarms, call bells, cries for helps by clients and staff); accurate visual, auditory and tactile observation of instruments, therapeutic devices and measuring devices (i.e. read electronic charts, monitors and thermometers, manipulate an intravenous infusion device). Communication: speak, write and use English language effectively, use computers and interpret nonverbal communication while maintaining sensitivity to individual cultural and economic differences (i.e. ability to use electronic documentation and communication devices, follow verbal and written instructions, provide effective client teaching, and consult and communicate with other health care providers in a professional manner). Analytical Skills/Critical Thinking: skills sufficient to process and interpret information, to transfer knowledge from one situation to another and to prioritize tasks, and problem solve in a timely manner. Professionalism, Ethics and Conduct: personal conduct, dress and hygiene that is professional, safe, ethical, and legal in accordance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and ANA s Nursing Code of Ethics, ANA s Standards of Practice, and NLN Core Values. Students seeking accommodations must seek services through the Disability Services. Page 6 of 8

7 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS If, after reading this information, I still have questions, who should I contact? Call the Admissions Office (330) to schedule an appointment with a SSC Academic Advisor for first time students to the College, or contact your assigned faculty Academic Advisor. If you still have unresolved questions, contact the Nursing Program Director. Will I get a degree upon completion of the program? Yes. The Associate of Applied Science Degree is awarded. Do I receive my Registered Nurse license upon graduation? Successful completion of the program meets state and national eligibility requirements to sit for the National Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses. Is financial aid available? Yes. SSC s Financial Aid Office can provide information related to available grants, loans, and scholarships. Call (330) , ext. 4301, to make an appointment. Is experience in the health care field helpful? Yes. Familiarity with the health care setting and terminology is beneficial. Program eligibility requirements are the same, however, for all applicants regardless of past experiences. Do I have to be licensed to practice nursing? Yes. To apply for a license in any state, one must graduate from an approved program, apply for licensure in the respective state, and pass the National Licensing Examination (NCLEX-RN). Are there job opportunities available? Yes. All graduates who have applied for nursing positions are employed in a variety of health care settings. Is the program accredited? Stark State College s Associate Degree in Nursing Program has provisional approval from the Ohio Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) 3343 Peachtree Road, NE, Suite 850 Atlanta, GA Phone: Fax: Website: Can credits earned in the program be transferred or applied to a baccalaureate degree? Yes. Graduates can easily matriculate into the various local colleges and universities BSN programs. The Associate Degree Nursing program has written articulation agreements with Malone College, Walsh University, The University of Akron and Chamberlain College. What is the difference between the weekday program and the evening/weekend program offerings? The basic difference is in the format for scheduling the nursing sequence. The evening/weekend program is offered primarily every other weekend. The classes, labs, and clinical experiences will be comparable to the weekday program offering. Classroom experiences are presented and offered in the evenings during the week throughout the semesters. Clinical experiences are conducted Saturdays and Sundays every other weekend. Stark State College 6200 Frank Avenue NW North Canton, OH STARK ( The College reserves the right to change this process at any time. This does not constitute a part of a contract between the applicant and the College. Page 7 of 8

8 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS, continued How many students are accepted into each evening/weekend class? Twenty (20) students are accepted for each weekend class; of these twenty positions, Mercy Medical Center employees will have ten positions guaranteed. In order to quality for the guaranteed positions, a Mercy Medical Center employee must meet the published admission and submit a letter from his/her immediate supervisor after June 1 st of the admitting year but prior to entering the program. If there are more than 10 eligible Mercy Medical Center employees, a guaranteed position for the following year will be granted. How long is the program? A minimum of five semesters is required to complete the 72 credit hour program. See page 4 for total curriculum sequence. Can I work while enrolled in the Nursing Program? It is acknowledged that students must continue to work while enrolled in the program; however, it is recommended that students be employed on a part-time basis. The actual number of work hours will vary, depending on individual student circumstances. Can I attend part-time? Students who complete all or most of their non-nursing courses prior to enrolling will have reduced course loads roughly equivalent to part-time study. Students may take all non-nursing courses on a part-time basis prior to entering the Nursing Program. Students must complete the nursing courses in sequence as listed. Hours involved in the program per week will vary from hours per week. Can I transfer in credits from other colleges? Please refer to the SSC Catalog regarding transfer of courses. The Admissions Department evaluates transcripts in relation to transferability of course work. Students must request, in writing, that official transcripts be evaluated by the Admissions Department. Forms are available in the Registration Office. While courses may be transferred with a grade of C- or D from another university or college, the Nursing Department will not accept those courses transferred with a C- or D toward graduation requirements. These may also preclude students from being eligible for admission to the nursing program. All non-nursing courses in the nursing curriculum must be completed with a grade of C or better. What do I need to know about the application procedure for licensure? Candidates who wish to sit for the NCLEX-RN (Registered Nursing Licensing Examination) will be required to submit their fingerprints to the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
