1 Dr. John F. Strauss Professor of Music Luther College October 2012 Covering page to attached 6-page CV TEACHING AND RESEARCH INTERESTS I teach piano and chamber literature, primarily of the common practice period, with special attention to the music of the mature Viennese Classical composers and the Romantic generation which came of age in the 1830 s. With my research partner Dr. Virginia Strauss, Professor of Music, I continue to research and publish modern performance editions of Viennese classical chamber music from the turn of the 18 th and 19 th centuries. In and 2013 I led a J-term course with Virginia Strauss, Vienna at the Crossroads of History and Culture, drawing on our four decades of reading, language study and direct experience with the city and people of Vienna. The course is both deeply satisfying to us and appears to be of genuine interest to our students. For many years we have also provided the academic portion of the Luther College Residency in Vienna. COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS WITH STUDENTS In the realm of the performing arts all teaching is of its very nature collaborative. Every student who presents a public performance, whether in seminar, recital, master-class or audition, has worked intensively with a teacher, wrestling with texts, exploring questions of style and interpretation and accommodating human limitations.
