1 MBA Fall 2015 Course Outline Creating the Small Business Room Bronfman 340 Monday & Wednesday 11:35 12: BUSA Professor: Alexander E. Kalil Office: Bronfman 649C Tel: ; cell alexander.kalil@mcgill.ca; akalil@openface.com Office Hours: Upon request please Professor directly to arrange an appointment Manager, Administration: Carol Clelland Office: Bronfman 649 Tel: carol.clelland@mcgill.ca Course description Focusing on the strategies and planning policies of small business enterprises, the course is designed for individuals who are considering entrepreneurial careers either as owners or managers. Provides a practical approach to the many problems likely to be encountered in the creation and management of a small business. General The underlying approach is to bring professionals and entrepreneurs from the Montreal Community to the classroom for dialogue with the students on the major elements of relevance to the creation, growing and management of a business or professional enterprise. Class lecture The weekly class-to-class lecture schedule is under the direction of Professor Alex Kalil, an entrepreneur with fifty years of real-time experience as an Investment Counsellor and subsequently in starting new businesses or re-engineering existing small enterprises. A detailed profile of Alex Kalil is attached. As a Dobson Fellow, he has participated in lecturing to the MBA program at McGill for the past fifteen years. He will be the principal lecturer and download his extensive experience on many topics as well as providing on-going interface between the Students and experienced Guest Mentors in class. He will also meet with students during the Term to assist them in their thought process regarding their future, by sharing the wisdom which he has accumulated throughout the years, in his professional and entrepreneurial activities.
2 Guest Mentors Interspersed in the weekly curriculum, we are privileged to welcome visiting executives with business or professional experience who will dialogue with students on the greater concept of what motivated them in the first place (VISION); what process they went through to translate their vision to a focused path (MISSION); what steps they took to put the mission to work (IMPLEMENTATION); and how and why they were successful (REALIZATION). In effect, we will have an interactive dialogue on the broader picture of: FROM VISION, THROUGH TO REALIZATION The students will be exposed to the principles, practices, originality, mindset, drive, devotion, foresight and general dedication which have characterized the business and professional life of our Guest Mentors. No matter the size of the enterprise (start-up, early stage, mature, regional or global), nor no matter the nature of the activity, the same characteristics come into play. We are honored to welcome the following business and professional executives who will share their experiences, and their knowledge with the class, in an informal, interactive, dialogue session as Mentors. It should be noted that these Mentors welcome on-going contact with the students, beyond the classroom. * John Struthers President, Normont Industries Inc. * Geoff Molson President, Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club Director, Molson Coors Brewing Company * Stephan Ouaknine CEO, Inergys Ltd. * Michel David Consultant in Change Management * David Plant Exec. Director, hsite Research Network * Jacques Dénommée Managing Partner, Axia Strategists * Simon Marcil President, s3 Technologies * Vincent Rabbat VP Operations, s3 Technologies * Marc Perras VP Sales, s3 Technologies * Ted Kalil VP Portfolio Mgr. 5 Alexander Kalil - BIO Prof. Alexander Kalil graduated from Harvard University with an AB, majoring in International Government and minoring in Economics. Following his formal education he worked as a securities analyst and portfolio manager in the Investment Counsel Industry for a 15 year period in the United States and Canada. These years in the investment field gave him fundamental training in corporate financial research and practical experience in analysis of industrial companies in a multitude of economic sectors, globally. His professional activity as a registered investment counsellor led him into private industry where he has been involved for the past 35 years as a Partner/President in nurturing start-ups, re-engineering mature companies, and growing mid-stage companies through organic expansion and roll-ups - all of the above impacting 6 companies in the leisure time, energy, micro-electronics, semi-conductor, nanotechnology and internet-related industries. In recent years he has remained involved in the corporate sector as a Director/Mentor/Advisor to start-up and early stage companies to assist in structuring general management policies and procedures; in establishing work flow processes; and in the development of programs to commercialize new products. Apart from his commercial activity, for 15 years he has been a lecturer in entrepreneurship courses in the B.Com and MBA programs in the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Montreal, under the umbrella of the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship. With respect to this involvement, he was honoured with the title of Dobson Fellow. His mentorship activity has carried over to the educational field where he acts in the same role with current students, as well as those from years past, to assist them in the transfer of their vision and thought process into reality, as start-up and early-stage entrepreneurs. He believes that it is important for one to be involved in the community around him - to return something to society. To that end, over the past 40 years, he has been active in a multitude of charitable organizations, church activities, sports programs and educational institutions. Among the several positions he has held over the years are the following: Former member, Field Screening Committee Harvard University Admission Dept.; Former Member Board of Governors, McGill University; Former Chair, McGill Associates; presently Governor Emeritus, McGill University; Life Governor, Cedars Home For Elderly; Founding Member of Board, PROMPT Quebec; Chair, Agile All-Photonics Network; Dobson Fellow, Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship; Chair, hsite Research Network.; Former Member of Advisory Committee to Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University; Former Member of Advisory Committee to Office of Technology Transfer, McGill University.; Currently, Member of Senate, McGill University, representing Board of Governors., Recipient of Queen Elizabeth 11 Diamond Jubilee Medal.
