5 Conference Descriptions {cont.} Occupational Therapy: Impact on Learning Jenny Burke This session will explore how Occupational Therapy can impact effective learning. Attendees will gain an understanding of Occupational Therapy and how children benefit from this therapeutic intervention to learn skills that set them up for life. The Pyramid of Development is used as a visual for understanding pediatric skills and awareness of potential gaps in development that warrant Occupational Therapy intervention. Discussion will include Sensory Processing Skills and Arousal Levels, and how difficulties in these areas impact a child s learning potential, attention and behavior. A review of Motor Skills (sensory motor, fine motor & gross motor skills), will explore how sensory motor integration lays a foundation for proper development of handwriting skills ie, directionality, visual motor integration, etc. Morphology: A Structured, Multisensory Approach Christy Hendrickson, MD, CET The study of morphology, using Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes helps develop decoding, spelling, and vocabulary skills. In this interactive session, I will demonstrate how to use multisensory procedures, including key words, gestures, manipulatives and movement, to make instruction more lively, exciting, and memorable. Participants will leave this session with effective strategies to enhance their teaching of morphology. The Impact of Auditory Processing on Reading Diedre Schloyer This session will explain auditory processing, types of auditory processing disorders, and the relationship between auditory processing and reading ability (both decoding and comprehension skills). 6 Conference Descriptions {cont.} Dynamic Vocabulary Instruction Dr. Anita Archer As students proceed through school, vocabulary becomes an increasingly important predictor of academic success and is directly related to reading comprehension. When elementary and secondary school students have vocabularies significantly lower than their peers, schools must emphasize vocabulary development. In this session, procedures for increasing vocabulary through read-alouds, explicit vocabulary instruction, and word learning strategies will be explored. Researchvalidated procedures will be demonstrated and practiced, with classroom videos illustrating the procedures. The Role of Memory Processes in Reading Betsy Hill This presentation will discuss various memory processes, including sensory memory, short-term memory, working memory and long-term memory, and how they relate to reading. Approaches to improving these and other cognitive processes will be discussed, as well as research that demonstrates the impact of cognitive skill enhancement on reading proficiency. Panel: Support Services Diedre Schloyer, Emily Cooper, Herb Hein, and Jenny Burke, MOT, OTR/L This panel brings together the four support professionals from our morning sessions. They will discuss scenarios and answer questions from the audience regarding how these professions work either separately or in collaboration to address various learning challenges. Understanding Learning Problems: The Science and the Art of Neuropsychological Assessment Nancy Markel, Ph.D. This presentation will examine the various components of brain functioning assessed during a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. We will focus on the importance of behavioral observation and examination of test scores in light of the child s history and current functioning at home, at school and in the community. It is the art of interpretation of history, observation and standardized test data that transforms a neuropsychological report from a document of numbers to a communication of who this child is and what is needed to develop an appropriate plan for education. Case studies will be utilized to demonstrate both the science and the art. For Registration questions please contact: Steven Mayo at newbridgeschool@me.com or call
7 Conference Descriptions {cont.} Exciting Information Based on Recent Dyslexia Research Regina Richards Noted author, researcher, and friend of the IDA, Dr. Richards brings us up to date on the most recent research relating to learning disabilities, especially dyslexia and dysgraphia, and discusses relevant implications. Using Diagramming to Build Comprehension Skills Patricia Padgett, M.Ed. For many students and teachers diagramming sentences is a dreaded part of language arts. What s the point? When diagramming is approached from the perspective of what is the function of the language in sentences? we can use grammar concepts to build comprehension skills. Using simplified language and a meta-cognitive process, students and teachers discover the parts of speech within sentences. Participants will create Code Cards to use in their settings and learn how to apply this process with formal grammar programs. Implementing RtI (Part 1) Cheryl Young, Ph.D. This presentation will provide a brief overview of Response to Intervention (RTI), discuss its connection to NCLB, and offer research-based recommendations on implementing effective literacy systems to increase college and career readiness for students with dyslexia.
