2 ILD Experiment at a future Linear Collider (ILC or CLIC) (Annual Project Report 2012) Main research project of the Institute Start: established , effective Scheduled completion: unknown. Introduction: The International Large Detector (ILD) is one of two validated experiments at the International Linear Collider (ILC), a worldwide project for a future linear e e + collider with center-of-mass energy up to 1 TeV. A modified version (ILD_clic) is under study for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), a less advanced project for e e + collisions up to 3 TeV. HEPHY is founding member of the ILD Collaboration. Our contributions are in detector optimization, software development (ilcsoft), and silicon tracker R&D (SiLC). These activities are partly supported since February 2011 by the EU s FP-7 project Advanced European Infrastructures for Detectors at Accelerators (AIDA). Group Members: Schwanda, Christoph Project leader since *) admin, 10 % Bergauer, Thomas (Dept. leader HLD) since SiLC, 10 % Dragičević, Marko (Research staff) since SiLC, 10 % Frühwirth, Rudolf (Dept. leader ASE) since ilcsoft, 20 % Glattauer, Robin (Doctoral student) since ilcsoft, 90 % Krammer, Manfred (Deputy director) since SiLC, 20 % Mitaroff, Winfried (Consultant, retired) since ilcsoft, 30 % Treberspurg, Wolfgang (Doctoral student) since SiLC, 10 % Valentan, Manfred (Doctoral student) since SiLC, 10 % *) since dates refer to the actual starting dates of work for this project; yellow bands for a working fraction > 50 %. International Positions: Manfred Krammer is chairman of the European Linear Collider Steering Committee (ELCSC). Highlights 2012: Development of a new software package for track reconstruction in the forward region of ILD (ForwardTracking), based on state-of-the-art algorithms (Cellular Automaton, Kalman Filter, Hopfield Neural Network), and its successful integration into ILD s software framework Marlin (diploma thesis of Robin Glattauer, July Oct. 2012). This was extensively used for the benchmark processings for the Detailed Baseline Design (DBD), vol. 3 of the ILC Technical Design Report (draft Dec. 2012). The package is coded in a clean object-oriented way and separated into 3 parts: core algorithms, interfaces to the framework, and detector-specific processors. This will facilitate its inclusion in AIDA s detector-independent Reconstruction Toolkits for HEP. Further activities: SiLC: Generic R&D for low-material high-precision silicon micro-strip modules, including sensor tests at a probe station in Vienna and at accelerator beams. This work is in synergy with Belle II and CMS. It is also part of AIDA s Work Package (WP) 9.4 Silicon Tracking Devices (convenor: T. Bergauer); a Milestone Report has been submitted.
3 Outlook to 2013: ilcsoft: Maintainance and improvements of our software RAVE (vertex reconstruction), LDT (fast detector simulation), and ForwardTracking (specific for ILD). SiLC: Continuation of generic R&D, synergetic with Belle II and CMS. AIDA: ILD s reconstruction software, including our ForwardTracking, may be regarded as a pilot implementation for the deliverable of WP 2.3 Reconstruction Toolkits for HEP, due by April The deliverable of WP 9.4 is due by Jan Future Strategies: The discovery at LHC of a new particle with mass of GeV, compatible with the Higgs boson, has urged the case for a linear e e + collider, operating in a first stage at s 250 GeV as a Higgs Factory, in order to perform precision measurements (e.g. spin, coupling strengths) complementary to those at LHC. Discussions have started in 2012, both in the frame of CERN Council s European Strategy for Particle Physics, and worldwide. In October 2012, the Japan Association of High Energy Physicists (JAHEP) issued a Proposal for a Phased Execution of the International Linear Collider to be constructed in Japan: starting as a Higgs Factory and to be upgraded in stages up to s = 500 GeV, with 50% of the construction costs to be covered by Japan; an extendibility up to the 1 TeV region to be secured. If adopted, Japan would take a lead on the high-energy frontier. In such a scenario, CERN might participate as umbrella organization representing its member states. The ILC Technical Design Report (TDR) will be finalized (including the costs) by June 2013, thus ending the mandate of the Global Design Effort (GDE) which started in A new organization, the Linear Collider Collaboration, was established by ICFA and will take over in Februray It will encompass 3 pillars: ILC, CLIC, and Physics & Detectors; appointed as director is Lyn Evans, as chairman of the Board Sachio Komamiya.
