Once again, I m happy to report that course conditions continue to improve day-by-day! The new irrigation system is 99% complete with all greens being watered each night. I thank all of you for your patience. Your continued patience is also appreciated as we adjust & tinker with the new system occasionally. New or temporary garbage/recycling bins are now available on most holes, so please help keep our course environmentally friendly. All leagues are now in full swing (pun intended ), so come on out and have some fun! Leagues & Events: Junior Golf Spring Clinics wrapped up on June young golfers participated to learn the fundamentals of golf while having some fun. Junior Golf Camps will be held for ages 8-15 from 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. on July ; on July ; and, on August Instruction will focus on: Safety, Fundamentals, Etiquette, Rules, Contests, and Short-game. Each day will include at least 9 holes of golf, some fun games and also non-golf activities. In the event of rain, that day s camp will be rescheduled to the Thursday of the same week. Cost is $ for each camp ($30 off for junior members), which includes all activities as well as lunch & snacks each day. There s still room for a few more; please register with the clubhouse before June 26 th. Monday Men s Twilight League: is now in full swing (pun intended ). Mike McLaughlin ( ) thanks those who have already paid their $20 and asks that everyone else remit their funds a.s.a.p. Also, please put your completed scorecards in the league s card-box behind the counter in the clubhouse. Tuesday Senior Men s Scrambles and Thursday Senior Mixed Scrambles are up and running again this year. Gildor Thériault has implemented some surprises this year, so come on out for some fun and fellowship. No need to be a club member or to pre-register, just show up and join the fun! Tuesday Ladies Nights commenced on June 16. Format is a 9 hole scramble with a 5:45 p.m. shotgun start, followed by a light supper. Cost is $10 for members and $20 for future-members. Please call the clubhouse to register. Friday Night Mix-ups started on June 19. Pick your own foursome or let our savvy organizer, Berend Tepper, pick one for you! Format is a nine-hole

Saint John Valley Senior Men League has commenced. To apply or obtain details, please contact Mike O Regan at Saint John Valley Senior Ladies League commenced on Wednesday, June 24 at AVCC. Future rounds will be played on July 8 (Fort Kent), July 22 (Mars Hill), August 12 (Caribou) and August 26 (Va-Jo-Wa (Island Falls)). Completed Tournaments/Events: On Saturday, June 13, the VICTORIA LA VALLÉE LIBERAL ASSOCIATION held their annual 18 hole scramble followed by supper & prizes. It was a fun tournament so everyone walked away a winner! Premier Brian Gallant and five Provincial Ministers were among the 52 participants. How well did the Premier play? Sorry, due to provisions of the Official Secrets Act we are not allowed to comment. The GFGC MIXED TOURNAMENT scheduled for Saturday, June 20 was rescheduled to July 25 (see details below). On Saturday & Sunday, June 27-28, sixteen members of our club participated in the initial rounds of the New Brunswick Past Presidents Cup, a provincially recognized event. The first round was played at Grand Falls Golf Club and the second at Aroostook Valley Country Club. A good time was had by all, but unfortunately our

3 Page 3 of 5 club will not be advancing to the next level for this season. On Saturday, July 4, the Relay for Life Canadian Cancer Society hosted a GOLF FOR CANCER FUNDRAISER TOURNAMENT. Unfortunately, no one won the hole-inone car sponsored by Toner GMC Chevrolet, but all 52 players enjoyed a wonderful day and The Society is already planning a repeat event next summer! Upcoming Tournaments/Events: On Friday, July 10, we ll hold the 7 TH ANNUAL TOWN OF GRAND FALLS TOURNAMENT. Format will be a 4 person Texas Scramble. Cost is $45 for members and $65 for non-members. The numerous prizes will include a kayak, a fire-pit and more! Do you feel lucky? The first player to score a hole-in-one on either Hole # 2 or Hole #16 will take home $25,000! On Monday, July 13, our club will host the Grand Falls Senior Men Invitational. This 18 hole tournament & supper is open to 55+ golfers and counts towards the New Brunswick Senior Player of the Year! Cost is $25 for members and $55 for future members. Call the clubhouse with your Golf Canada handicap factor to register. On Saturday, July 25, the GFGC MIXED TOURNAMENT will go ahead (rescheduled from Saturday, June 20). Format is Modified Pinehurst (two-person, alternate shot teams). Cost is $70 for members and $90 for future-members. Final registration will be at 11:30 am with shotgun start at 12:30 pm. Players names and Golf Canada handicap factors must be pre-registered with the clubhouse by no later than July 23 th. On Wednesday, August 5, the Ladies Invitational Two-person Scramble will commence with a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. Cost is $25 for members and $40 for future members. Please call the clubhouse with your Golf Canada handicap factor to register (if desired, reserve a power cart when you call). Our latest additions are: On Sunday, July 5, a group of friends all held their breath as one ball flew straight and true into the cup on Hole #2. Congratulations Diane Cormier! Your turn for a hole-in-one might be just around the corner; so keep your head down, your eye on the ball, and swing smoothly! Gazette Golf Tips: In previous Gazettes, we focused on pre-season preparation and developing a routine off the tee box. Maintain the same routine for fairway shots; i.e., relax + visualize your ball s trajectory and landing zone + easy swing. Knowing what distance you hit each club is helpful in planning your approach to the green and avoiding hazards. Adjust to suit special circumstances as follows (NB: the following tips are for right-handed golfers; left-handed golfers should make adjustments, as necessary): A ball hit on an uphill lie will fly short and left. Choke down on a longer club than normal and aim slightly right of target with ball forward in stance; place more weight on your rear foot; flex your forward knee and limit both backswing and body turn. A ball hit on a downhill lie will fly long and right. Aim left of target with a shorter club than normal; place ball back in stance with hands in front of the ball; place more weight on the forward foot and more flex in the rear knee and, again, limit both backswing and body turn. A ball hit on a side-hill lie with ball below your feet will fly right and slice. Set-up closer to the ball with a longer club than normal and aim left of target. Close clubface slightly with more weight on your heels. Increase flexion of both knees and take a ¾ swing with head still. A ball hit on a side-hill lie with ball above your feet will fly left and hook. Choke down on a longer club than normal and, with the ball back in stance, aim right of target. Open clubface slightly and place more weight on your toes. Sweep the ball with a ¾ backswing. Practicing these special shots will improve ball control and result in lower scores!
