Who Wants to be a College Graduate? College Jeopardy The Center for College Planning INSTRUCTOR GUIDE Thank you for your interest in utilizing our College Jeopardy Who Wants to be a College Graduate game for your fifth grade students. This Instructor s Guide includes: A list of materials needed to complete the game Suggested speaking points with each slide Key Learning Objectives: Become familiar with high school and college terminology Length of program: minutes Materials: An LCD Projector and screen (if not available, instructors could print out the title pages for the white/chalk board and write in the point values). We recommend using small white boards for teams to write their answer on. If not available, students can write their answers in a notebook or could answer orally. We hope you find this guide helpful when preparing for your presentation. If you have any questions regarding its content or intended use, please do not hesitate to contact any of the counselors at the Center for College Planning at GRADUATE ext. 119.
Game Rules: Break into teams. Each team will have a white board and a marker in order to answer questions. For each question, each team can answer. If their answer is correct, the team receives the points. The choosing of the category will rotate amongst the teams. If anyone shouts out an answer, the question will be discarded and the point value will be deducted from the team score. Note to Presenter: Break the class into three to five teams and explain the rules. If you do not have access to small white boards for teams to record their answers, you can use paper or designate one spokesperson per team. College Students New Hampshire College Trivia Going to College Final Jeopardy Major Wildcard Note to Presenter: Explain categories and choosing the category will rotate amongst the teams. With the PowerPoint, clicking the wagers will bring you to the questions and clicking on the white box will bring you back to the wager board. When all of the questions have been answered, click on final jeopardy to access the question. Where do college students do most of their studying? Library Dorm Room Study Lounge Apartments Computer Labs Outside In college students spend less time in class and more time doing work for class. Reminder: Click white box to get back to the wager board.
Where do college students live? Residence Hall Apartment At Home In college you are assigned a roommate(s). The number of roommates may vary from one to three. Most freshman and sophomores live in residence halls or dorms, upperclassmen live in apartments either on or off campus. Reminder: Click white box to get back to the wager board. Name three positive reasons for going to college. Get a good job Study what you like to do Meet new people To experience life away from home Have the potential to make more money College degrees can lead to better jobs. It is important to like what you do because you spend a lot of time doing it. Name 3 things college students do outside of the classroom? College newspaper, student government, sports, radio program, research, work Have the students talk about what they do now and encourage them to get involved in their high school community. It is equally important if you work parttime, babysit or volunteer.
Name 3 buildings students find on a college campus. Library, dining hall, student union, sports arena, academic buildings, theatre, or bookstore Campuses can be big or small. Most are small enough so students can walk from their dorm, to the dining hall, and to their classes. Some larger campuses require a bus in order to get from building to building. They are too big to walk! What is the largest college/university in N.H.? University of N.H. in Durham 11,000 students At most colleges and universities, even the large ones, most classes don t have more than 50 students. In addition, larger universities, still have smaller colleges within the larger university. Big schools will have a small number of classes over, but will have at least one in 1 st or 2 nd year. Bonus points: Where is UNH located? Durham (or Manchester) What is their mascot? Wildcats
Name 1 of New Hampshire s s community colleges? Great Bay CC, NH Technical Institute, Lakes Region CC, White Mountains CC, River Valley CC, Manchester CC, or Nashua CC The NH Community College system is a great place to get started. There are articulation agreements between the community college system and the four year public college and universities. This means that the courses you take at the community colleges are transferrable so students can still earn a bachelors degree in four years. The community colleges can be a great place to start! Students choose this option for many reasons, including, not ready to move into a dorm, academically need another year or two to strengthen their academics, and for financial reasons. What is the Plymouth State University mascot? The Panthers School spirit is just as important in college as it is in high school and middle school. Getting involved in your community is important. What is the oldest college in the state of New Hampshire? Dartmouth College 1769 Dartmouth is an Ivy League college, a term that started as a sports conference. Dartmouth was created as a school for students of Native American origin. Did you know that Dr. Seuss graduated from Dartmouth? Bonus Points: What is their mascot? Big Green
What New Hampshire college is named after the 14th United States President? Franklin Pierce University Rindge, NH Franklin Pierce University s main campus is located in Rindge, New Hampshire. In addition to the Rindge campus, FPU has four locations throughout the state of New Hampshire and one in Arizona. Students can also take courses online. A typical class has approximately 16 students. Franklin Pierce University is home to The Bubble, a 72,000 square foot airframe building that students may play sports and work out in. Can you go to college when you don t t know what you want to study? YES! When you are not sure what you want to study you go in undecided. That way, the first two years you take all of your general education courses and classes you are interested in and do not need to choose a major until the end of your sophomore year. What do you earn at the end of your college experience? Diploma/Degree Take advantage of every opportunity, Learn to become your best advocate, study abroad, co-ops, internships, meet people that will help you get jobs, go to graduate school.
How can a student lean about a college they are interested in? Look it up online Visit or Take a Tour Talk to someone who goes there The best way to learn about a college is to get on the campus! Never too early to get on a campus! Go see a sporting event, a play, a concert, or visit family. Students must apply to college. What is the most important thing a college can know about you when you apply? How strong your courses and grades are! All of your courses and grades from grades 9-12 are listed on your high school transcript. The better your grades, the more options you have when applying to colleges. Although middle school grades are not on your transcript it is important to try your best now. How well you do in your classes in middle school determines what type of classes you can take in high school. Besides studying hard, what should you be doing to get ready for college? Read, work, join clubs, play sports, community service, leadership, etc. Some colleges get a lot of applications. For example, BU gets 45,000 applications. They are looking for people, not computers, so what you do outside of your academics is an important part of the process.
What is the specific program you choose to study at college? A major The program you choose is called a major. There are over 900 majors! Students are required to choose, or declare, a major by the end of their sophomore year in college. Students take a specific set of courses. Sometimes, students also want to study something else. Students can have a double major or may choose to declare a minor, which requires fewer courses in a specific field. True or False 4-year colleges require high school students to take a foreign language in order to be accepted to their college/university. True High school graduation requirements can be different than college admissions requirements. It is important for students to keep their options open. For students who have a learning disability or are ESL, they can usually get the foreign language requirement waived. (In addition, if your high school doesn t offer a foreign language, it can be waived.)
Name 3 college majors. Art, Business, Nursing, Engineering, Biology, Criminal Justice, Computer Technology, Fire Science, Law, Meteorology, Fashion Design, Sports Management, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Psychology.. With so many majors to choose from, important to know what your strengths and interests are in the classroom, also where your interests are as they are not necessarily the same thing. There are programs that can help students decide on majors, careers, and college: Choices and Kuder. There is also a college website here in NH designed with you in mind, NH College Club. Check them out at What does job shadowing mean? Visiting job sites and learning more about a career Talking with adults you know about what they do is important. Visiting them on the job is even better. Not every job is % perfect, need to know the ups and downs to know if it a job you really want. Name 5 careers a college education can prepare you for. Your options are endless, in fact, sometimes it is easy to become overwhelmed with all of the options. A college education prepares you in many ways, including better oral and written communication skills, social networking, and time management skills. And, given the average person changes jobs 7-8 times in their life, these skills are extremely important.
True or False All certificates/diplomas take 4 years to complete. False There are many types of degrees that are awarded upon the completion of college. Certificates are awarded after a training program, which can last anywhere from 6-14 months. Associates degrees are awarded after completing a 2 year community college. Bachelors degrees are received after completing a four year college or university. Finally, advanced degrees, like MBAs, PhDs, MDs, JDs are awarded after graduate school, which you complete after your Bachelors degree. True or False Senior year is the most important. False they all are! This highlights how important your transcript is. Colleges want to see students maintain consistency or see an upward trend with their grades and course difficulty. Remember, you go inside the same door you come out. Important to know that you have done your best!
What is a college scholarship? Free Money For College! Given to students for: good grades, sports, or community service Work hard now, because it can pay off. You may get more money later. Many colleges/universities award merit scholarships to student who have worked hard in high school. You high school will also have thousands of dollars it gives away to students who have contributed positively to community. How do students pay for college? Work Students & parents save money Loans scholarships grants Students live at home Go to college part-time time Parents and students have a responsibility to help pay for college, however, there are many financial aid programs out there to help. A college education needs to be a priority. What are 3 things to consider to see if a college is right for you? Campus location (near home, a city, a ski resort) Campus size (small, medium or large) Programs of study/majors Sports or clubs Cost There are many tools to help you choose a college that is right for you. Get to know your guidance counselor, talk with people you know about college, and most importantly, get to know you!
FINAL JEOPARDY Category: Colleges Wager: $$$ Name 5 colleges/universities in New Hampshire and 5 colleges/universities outside of New Hampshire. Note to Presenter: NH schools University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, Keene State College, Granite State College, Saint Anselm College, Southern New Hampshire University, Rivier College, Franklin Pierce College, Colby-Sawyer College, New England College, Hesser College, Chester College, Antioch University of New England, Massachusetts College of Health Science and Pharmacy Manchester, NH Institute of Art, Lebanon College, Magdelen College, Dartmouth College, Daniel Webster College, NHTI, Great Bay CC, Manchester CC, Nashua CC, White Mountains CC, Lakes Region CC, River Valley CC Use judgment for colleges/universities outside of New Hampshire.
