The Book of Ruth LESSON 4 CHAPTER 3 Last week we ended with a wonderful awakening for Naomi. She was seeing the LORD move in her and Ruth's lives and was giving glory to Him. How blessed she must have been to see God's divine providence through every detail of their lives and know it was Him working. He was abundantly caring for them, and guiding them to Boaz who would insure that they would no longer have to live as poor widows. Isn't it wonderful how God cared for Ruth, from the very moment she declared her allegiance? Rom. 8:28 tells us, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose", NKJV. We can surely see this scripture in action through this small, but powerful book of the Bible. God brought Ruth to the field of Boaz; he was a godly man and was able to perform the duties of the kinsman redeemer. This was not a coincidence; it was God's plan. We should see everything in our life from the same perspective. Let's learn from these three godly people as they allow His plan to unfold. Let's see how He greatly enriched their lives. DAY ONE As always, pray before you start, and ask God to reveal His wondrous will for your life. Read all of Ruth 3 1. Before we get into an in depth study, lets take a moment to briefly record what takes place in this chapter and be sure to capture any insights the Lord has revealed to you. Read Ruth 3: As we go through this study, we find a recurring selflessness among Naomi, Ruth and Boaz. They had established a relationship where they were sensitive to each other s needs before their own. What do you learn about selflessness in the following verses? Rom. 12:10 & 11
2 Rom. 15:1-3 Rom. 16:3 & 4 1Cor. 10:24 2Cor. 5:14 & Naomi's advice to Ruth was not intended for romance, but was instruction to Ruth about the Israelite law and custom. By following Naomi's advice, Ruth is telling Boaz that she wants him to be her kinsman redeemer. Ruth was putting herself in a vulnerable position and setting herself up for one of two things, to be rejected or accepted. When we come to Jesus, are we taking the same risk as Ruth did? Use John 6:37 to help explain. 4. When you read vs. 3 & 4, you will see four basic steps Naomi directed Ruth to do. Read these verses and compare them to the work God does in us. Wash thyself Titus. 3:5 Psalm. 51:2 Anoint yourself (Holy Spirit) 1 John. 2:201
3 John. 2:27 Put thy raiment on (robe of righteousness) 2 Cor. 5:21 Rom. 3:22 Claim your kinsman redeemer Joshua 24:15 1. Just like Ruth, it is our responsibility to come; Jesus will not force himself on us. Record what you learn about Him in: James 4:8(a) Heb. 10:22 & 23 DAY TWO Again, start your study with prayer. Read Ruth 3: Ruth declares to Naomi that she will do all that was instructed, and then she does it. Ruth trusted that Naomi had only good intentions for her and followed her plan without question. What do you learn about God's intentions for us in Jeremiah 29:11? CHALLENGE: Ps. 119:11 tells us that we need to hide God's word in our heart so we won't sin against Him. Lets take time to do this by memorizing Jeremiah. 29:11.
4 PERSONAL: We see an example of a wonderful friendship between Naomi and Ruth. It is God centered and unconditional. During this season of their lives Ruth trusted Naomi, knowing Naomi loved her and wanted to take care of her. In the same respect Naomi accepted that role as the older and wiser woman, and she desired to teach and guide Ruth. Relationships change with seasons in our lives. We should always be sensitive to circumstances that may call for different decisions at other times. We should not define every friendship with expectations. We find in the book of Ruth an example of a relationship where each person is sensitive to the needs of the other. Take a moment to examine you friendships. Is the same attitude present? Write what you discover here. 2. Last week, we touched on Titus 2:3-5, and reflected on how Ruth heeded the advice of Naomi, "an older woman." Let's go more in depth with this scripture and discover the instruction given. Fill in what you find here. a. The older women likewise, that they be in, not slanderers, not given to much wine, of things; (Titus 2:3 NKJV) b. That they the young women to their husbands, to their children, (Titus 2:4 NKJV) c. to be,,,, to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. (Titus 2:5 NKJV) When taking a new believer under your wing, you are not only encouraging a new child of God, but you are saving yourself from spiritual stagnation. (GREG LAURIE) 3. Explain in your own words how this passage is applicable in friendship. Prov. 27: Because of their friendship, Naomi had the responsibility to be the "older woman", or teacher to Ruth, the "new believer." Ruth had to learn the customs and commandments of God for His people. She had to learn what it meant to be an
5 Israelite, and walk in a way that was pleasing to God. For the new believer today, she also must leave the world she knew behind and learn God's Word and His ways, which are so contrary to the world's thinking and to our own nature. In Christ, we truly are "born again"! 2 Corinthians 5:17 says "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." Explain what you discover about our new nature from the following verses. Eph. 2:1-3 2 Pet. 1: When opportunity comes, are you building up and encouraging new believers in the word of God or does fear hold you back? Like Naomi, may we be found faithful in that God calls us to do. DAY THREE Start your day in prayer asking the Lord to reveal His teaching to you. Read Ruth 3: Even though Boaz does not know Ruth well, he can tell that she is a woman "of the LORD." The Bible tells us that we can know certain things, which will reveal we are of the Lord. Complete the sentences below: 1 John 2:3 - By this we know that we know Him - 1 John 2:5 - By this we know that we are in Him - 1 John 3:16 - By this we know love- 1 John 4:13 - By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us- 2. In vs. 11, Boaz makes a commitment to Ruth because she is known to be a virtuous
6 woman throughout Bethlehem-Judah. Ruth has obviously been the topic of conversation. It is said that our lives may be the only bible many will read. How do the following verses encourage you in your walk with Jesus? Rom. 15:6 1 Cor. 10: Pet. 2: Look up the word virtuous and give the definition. 4. Let us look at Prov. 31:10-31 that we might be inspired by the example given of what a Virtuous Woman is in the sight of God. Be careful that you do not use this beautiful scripture as a measuring rod and understand that this is a review of a woman's entire life. Praise God that He has written this for us to refer to and glean from. Choose three verses to share what the Lord has revealed to you, so that others may glean from them and be comforted by them. A. B. C. In our society where physical appearance counts for so much, it may surprise us to realise that her appearance is never mentioned. Her attractiveness comes entirely from her character. (The Living Bible) 5. Read 1 Sam. 16:7 and discover how the Lord sees us. DAY FOUR Pray before you start and see what the Lord has in store for you.
7 Read Ruth 3: In verses 12 and 13 Boaz not only reveals his willingness to marry Ruth if the nearer kinsman does not, but he also takes on the responsibility of solving the dilemma of the nearer kinsman for Ruth. So often we keep our dilemmas to ourselves and rely on our own abilities. What do we learn about worry and burdens from the following verses? Mat. 11: Pet. 5:5-7 Ps. 55:22 2. We read that Boaz was not willing to perform the duties of a kinsman to Ruth until the nearer kinsman had the opportunity to accept that role. This was not because Boaz did not want to marry Ruth, but it was because Boaz was a man of integrity and he wanted to obey the law. Why is it important for us to follow the laws or rules and show respect for those in authority over us? 1 Pet. 2:13-17 Rom. 13:1-7 Christians are to be law-abiding citizens. If the law of one's government violates the revealed will of God, then, of course, the believer must obey God, though he may have to suffer the penalties of that government's laws. (Ryrie Study Bible) 3. In verse 14 we see Boaz instructing Ruth to not let it be known that a woman came to the threshing floor, most likely to protect her from gossip. What does 1 Thess. 5:22 say about appearance?
8 PERSONAL: Explain how that can be related to your daily life. Avoiding even the appearance of evil is a step beyond avoiding evil itself. We're not to give others the opportunity to doubt the sincerity of our faith by our actions, even if we know the actions to be innocent. (Chuck Smith) 4. In vs Boaz sends a message to Naomi, by way of an abundance of barley. What do you think Boaz is communicating to Naomi? 5. Review vs , and while you read the details of these passages list the phrases that give you insight into Boaz's heart? DAY FIVE Pray before you start your lesson and seek His instruction. Read Ruth 3: Naomi tells Ruth to sit still and wait because Boaz would not rest until the matter was resolved. Boaz was a man of integrity and probably had a reputation for keeping his word. Jesus too keeps His word. What promise is mentioned in Luke 24:49? 2. What power was He talking about? (See Acts 1:8) 3. Just as Naomi and Ruth were enabled to live new lives, abundant lives, and lives protected through the "goel", we are enabled to also live new lives because of our Kinsman Redeemer. This work is being done through Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. John 14:18 tells us that He will not leave us comfortless or like orphans. What do the following verses say concerning His ability? 1 Tim. 1:12-14
9 Phil. 3:20-21 Jude 1:24 CHALLENGE: Read Acts 2: for an exciting promise regarding the Holy Spirit. Write how this ministers to you. 4. For Ruth to trust Boaz may have seemed hard, since she did not know him for very long. But, Ruth trusted Boaz and believed he was a man who would do the things he said. Can we have that same kind of trust in God to keep His word, even if we have just given our life to Him? Use these verses as a guide. 1 Kings 8:56 Tit. 1:2 Heb. 6: Define immutable, and write a note to God how it makes you feel to know this is one of His attributes. 6. Read vs. 18. Sitting still is not always an easy thing to do. What are some of the benefits you find by being still and waiting on the Lord? Ps. 46:10
10 Ps. 25:5 Ps. 25:21 Ps. 27:14 Ps Ps. 40:1 Ps. 59:9 Ps. 62:5 I waited for the Lord on High, I waited and he heard my cry. I waited for the Lord on High, I waited and he heard my cry. He pulled me out of my despair and showed me where to walk, From fear into security, from quicksand to a rock. I'll sing to let the people know that I have been restored, And they shall kneel and understand to return and trust in the Lord. DAY SIX Pray that you would be open to the Lord's work in your life. Review
11 1. Ruth's obedience to Naomi's instruction was a selfless response that resulted in the reaping of a blessing. Is there an area of your life where you have received counsel, followed it, and reaped a blessing? 2. Boaz's love for Ruth became so evident to us in this chapter. Are you truly aware of the great love Jesus has for you? It is an everlasting love, an unconditional love. Do you have a favorite verse that assures you of this great love? 3. This week we studied about the divine providence of God. We learned about waiting on Him for guidance, trusting Him to do what He says and standing on His promises. What do these things mean to you? 4. How can you apply these truths to your life? Challenge yourself by writing out three applications where the Lord is encouraging you through this lesson. A. B. C. 5. It is always appropriate for us to wait on the Lord in all things. Write a note to Him thanking Him for waiting for you! Hallelujah!
