4 DISCLAIMERS This document contains the locations of access to lakes in Polk County that are available to the general public. Since ramps are owned by local, state, and private entities, or may not be owned or maintained at all, the hours of operations, fees, maintenance, etc., will vary. This directory should not be considered an all-inclusive document. There may be other lakes or pits that have public access. It is also possible for lakes in this directory to become non public access at any time. Therefore, you should always investigate ramps prior to trying to use them. Ramp conditions will vary from time to time due to low or high waters. Polk County assumes NO responsibility for the condition of ramps other than their own. We have tried to include the ramp maintenance entity, so you can contact the proper entity if you do have a problem. Some lake access may be a clearing off of the side of a road or a right-of-way, whereas there will not be any maintenance entity. USE RAMPS OR LAKE ACCESS POINTS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Ramp Rating: This office created a ramp rating system for general condition information and should be used as a guide only. The rating may not be current depending on when the rating was done and when this document was printed. Directions to lake access sites are very specific (for those who may be new to the area) and should be easy to follow. Should you find any directions that are difficult to follow or are incorrect, please call and inform us so we can make the appropriate changes. 7 DEFINITIONS Canal Access Only This means that a particular lake can only be reached by a canal. Chain of Lakes If there is a check mark in this box it means that lake is part of the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. FWC Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission KWCHL Kissimmee Waterway Chain of Lakes. Lake Depth If a lake depth is available it will be listed here. Lake depth varies depending on site of measurement and may not reflect an overall lake depth of the lake. Lake Type The values for this are: *Landlocked no inflow or outflow on the lake. *Inflow some type on inflow into the lake, whether it is a stream or a ditch. *Outflow some type of outflow from the lake, whether it is a stream or a ditch. *Inflow & Outflow some type of inflow and outflow for the lake, whether it is a stream or a ditch. Lat/Lon This stands for latitude / longitude for approximate the center of the lake. NWHCL Northern Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. Ramp Checked This is the month and year that the ramp was rated. Ramp Directory Map Page Refers to the five maps on pages in this directory. This is a generalized map of the area where the lake is located. Ramp Maint. Entity Party responsible for maintaining the boat ramp on a particular lake. Ramp Rating The definitions for the ramp ratings. Sport Fisheries and Rated by The sport fisheries refers to how the sport fishing is in a particular lake and who rated it. S-T-R Stands for Section-Township-Range used on DOT maps. Surface Area This is the surface area of a lake in acres. This is a historical value actual surface areas will vary as a lake rises and falls. SWHCL Southern Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. Vessel Information This has information about which vessels can or cannot be used in a particular lake, or any other information that may be useful or important concerning vessels and a lake. 5

8 BOAT RAMP RATING SYSTEM This Rating System was developed to give boaters an idea of what ramp or lake access conditions may be. USE THIS RATING SYSTEM AT YOUR OWN RISK These conditions are ALWAYS subject to change due to high or low waters or other unknown factors. Some lake accesses are actually right-of-ways off of a road and even a 4x4 vehicle could have problems. It is possible that ramps have been upgraded as well, and may be in better condition than this directory reports. It is VERY IMPORTANT to check the rating DATE before attempting to enter a lake, and you should always check the ramp out when you arrive to confirm the condition! 9 Bottom Contour Map There are several things to keep in mind when it comes to the contour maps in this directory. The maps in this document come from several sources and are not the same scale. Many of these maps are over 10 years old, and may not reflect how the bottoms are today. There are many lakes that do not have contour maps. In those cases, outlines of the lakes have been provided to give the user an idea of the shape of the lake. A (*) is placed on the contour map to show the approximate location of the boat access. This office produced some of these contours whereas others were obtained from the following agencies projects and/or reports. City of Lakeland Lakes Program The contour maps for the following lakes are not actual water depths, but instead represent the mean sea level measurements: Hatchineha, Rosalie, Tiger, and Weohyakapka. 7

11 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS LEISURE SERVICES PARKS AND RECREATION WELCOME YOU TO POLK COUNTY S CAMPGROUNDS Enjoy Your Stay Camping areas are provided for citizens and visitors an opportunity to experience recreational camping in our local environment. Please extend common courtesy to fellow campers and observe the following park rules for the safety and enjoyment of all: Must be 18 years of age to reserve campsite. One camping unit per site. Station wagons, pickup trucks with shells, cars and passenger vans are not recognized as camping units. Checkout time is 12:00 p.m. Any after-hour entry/exit must be prescheduled with Resident Park Caretaker. Pets are to be attended and leashed at all times. Clean up after your pet. Supervised outdoor fires are permitted in designated areas only. Intoxicants and firearms are prohibited. Off-road and unlicensed vehicles are not permitted. Unattached generators are not permitted. Quiet hours are from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am. No washing of vehicles, boats or trailers. Garbage to be deposited in dumpster. Grey water must be disposed of in dump station only. The use of Blue Boy containers is prohibited. Commercial vehicles and solicitations are not permitted in or from the park. FOR SALE signs are not permitted. Polk County is not responsible for loss or damage caused by fire, theft or accident. Stays in the camping areas limited to 14 total calendar days per quarterly period. 12 Federal and State Laws Concerning Personal Watercrafts and Motorboats Safety Requirements U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices must be worn by operator and passengers Kill switch lanyard must be worn by operator Personal Watercrafts may not be operated between the hours from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise Personal Watercraft Operators must be 14 years of age or older. For more information about the ordinances, contact: Polk County Natural Resources Division Refer violations to Polk County Sheriff s Office Marine Unit Day Evening MANDATORY BOATER EDUCATION LAW Applies to motorboats 10 HP or greater and personal watercrafts. Any person 16 years of age and younger as of October 1, 1996 will be required to successfully complete an APPROVED boating education course. The age requirement will increase one year each October 1st for five years following This one year increase per year extends to the year 2001 when all persons 21 years of age and younger must comply with this law. Photographic identification and a boater safety identification card MUST be carried by person affected by this law. It should be noted that personal watercrafts are subject to ALL other boating laws, rules, and legislation. 13 Polk County has been blessed with many lakes and streams. Several ordinances have been created in Polk County to help make boating an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone. WATERWAY PROTECTION CODE ORDINANCE #93-37 Any person who operates a boat upon the waters of this County shall do so in a careful and prudent manner so as to show no evidence of a wanton disregard for the safety of person or property. All boats shall operate at a slow down/minimum wake speed within 150 feet from a canal or channel mouth. No boat shall exceed an idle speed/no wake within a canal or channel. No boat shall travel on a plane (not fully settled into the water) within 150 feet of any canal opening or shoreline, or 75 feet from any fixed structure which ever is the greater distance to shore, except when pulling a skier from or returning him/her to shore. Skiing shall be prohibited in channels or canals which are connected to lakes. All boats shall keep at least 300 feet behind any boat towing a skier and shall stay clear of, by at least 150 feet, any bather or boat (anchored or in motion) unless approaching at an idle speed. When a slalom course or ski jump is in use by skiers, all other boats shall stay at least 150 feet away on either side, and 600 feet from the entrance and exit. All motorboats shall yield the right of way to non-motorized boats. A boat shall not be operated by a person who is under the influence of drugs and/or alcoholic beverages to such an extent that his normal faculties are impaired to operate a boat in a safe manner. No slalom course or ski jump may be placed in or remain in any water body in Polk County unless the following conditions are met: 1. The slalom or ski jump course shall have an open water approach of a minimum length of 600 feet and an open exit of a minimum length of 600 feet. An additional open water of 150 feet must exist on either side of the slalom course. 2. Prior to the installation of a slalom course or ski jump, a permit by the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection and any other regulatory agencies which require a permit for the placement of a slalom course or ski jump in a water body, must be obtained. 3. A slalom or ski jump course, which is in existence and has all required State and Federal permits prior to June 26, 1991, shall be exempt from the above requirements for the duration of the existing permit, applicable to such slalom or ski jumps. Every person under six years of age while on board a boat measuring less than 26 inches in length shall wear a Type I, II, or III flotation device approved by the United States Coast Guard, while the boat is underway. For purposes of the subsection, underway shall mean at all times, except when the boat is anchored, moored or aground. No person shall power load any boat onto a trailer at any Polk County boat ramp in such a manner to undermine the ramp. AIR BOAT ORDINANCES #94-37 AND #96-14 Prohibits the launching, operation, or use of airboats on County park facilities at Lake Rosalie and Lake Pierce boat ramps. Prohibits operation of airboats between the following hours: 10:00 PM 7:00 AM on Sunday Thursday and 12:00 midnight 6:00 AM on Friday, Saturday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Exemptions include Lakes Arbuckle and Hatchineha, Kissimmee River Oxbow located in Polk County (Camp Mack/Camp Lester) and Lake Kissimmee. Prohibits operations of airboats, above idle, within 500 feet of any residence at any time.
