Introduction Hello! Congratulations on getting accepted into Collingwood College and Durham University! We are Noa and Yang and we re here to make your transition into studying abroad as enjoyable as possible. Together with our Senior Fresher s Representative Beth Swinburn, and President Tori Campbell, we have put together some activities to warm you up for induction week as well as planned to help you sort out all the administrative processes you ll have to go through. The College website provides some good information on how to prepare for your arrival: With an extra section especially for international students: tional-freshers/ The University also offers plenty of advice on how you should plan your arrival: We strongly recommend you arrive on the 30th of September, so that you don t miss anything. This handbook should cover most things, but if you have any doubts don t hesitate to give us a shout. We look forward to meeting all of you soon! Noa & Yang! 3
Before you arrive The University and College will need you to fill in some forms as they become available, please keep checking the website for a complete list of forms. Try to get this out of the way as soon as possible, as it makes things a lot easier when you arrive. For example if you upload your photo when prompted, you ll be able to collect your campus card earlier. This needs to be done by the 12 th of September via duo.dur.ac.uk. Getting a Visa Depending on what country you re from you might have to get a student visa, you ll find more information in the webpage below. In order to get a visa, you will need a CAS number. This number is issued to you after you ve completed the AS12 form on the university website. As such, make sure you do this as soon as possible. When you arrive we will bring you to the mandatory University visa checks and you might have to check in regularly with your department during your time here. The UK also requires nationals from certain countries to register with the police upon arrival. You can check the list of countries and get more information below, if your country is listed (this will also be printed on your visa) you will have to make an appointment with the police. Medical Forms Before you arrive, you will need to register at the local medical practice. This form can be found online, printed off and sent in by post. If you have never been registered with 4
the NHS, in the section that refers to Previous UK doctors, please write N/A. Vaccines You are required to ensure that your vaccinations are up to date before coming to University and you may need to get additional vaccines, depending on your country of origin. Check with the British High Commission or Embassy in your country for more information. The vaccines for Measels, Mumps & Rubella (MMR), Polio, Meningitis and Hepatitis C are recommended for all international students. Additionally, you may need to be tested to show that you are free of Tuberculosis (TB) before applying for your visa. Check this website for more details: What to Bring Traveling with too much luggage can be both expensive and troublesome; at the same time it might be cheaper to buy what you need in the UK in some cases. Durham University has some suggestions: ng/ Clothing Weather in Durham can be quite varied, last year temperatures ranged from below freezing to 25 o C. We are quite lucky in that we have less rainfall than most of the UK, but you should bring a good raincoat or buy one when you get here. It does get quite cold in winter so if you re not use to cold weather we recommend that you bring a decent set of warm clothing and a good jacket in your luggage. But you will be 5
able to buy most of your winter clothes here for a reasonable price if you re struggling with packing. That said, it is also a good idea to have some smart and casual attire for when you go out or for the warmer months. We recommend having a set of black tie as well, as you will be attending formals and balls. Bedding & other Essentials Throughout the International Welcome Days we will run tours into town, where you can buy linens, toiletries etc. You can also buy bedding pack from College containing a duvet, duvet cover, pillow and sheets. We recommend you bring some basic toiletries and a towel in case you arrive after shops close. College supplies an emergency bedding pack for one night, which you can use before purchasing your own. Extras The standard domestic power supply in the UK is 230V through 3-pin square sockets. If your country s voltage is 120V, it would be wise to carry an adapter rather than have to buy one here. You ll find that with so many people coming into contact within fresher s week it s common to come down with fresher s flu and it ll be convenient to have your own medicine on hand. Passport-size pictures are always useful for filling in forms and also getting a rail card. What NOT to bring Kitchen equipment like toasters, kettles or microwaves are provided by college in a pantry (also has a fridge) on your floor so please don t bring them. Do not bring non-led lights or candles and other items that might cause a fire. 6
There is an iron in the laundry room in college so you won t have to bring one either. Lastly, please do not bring any pets with you. 7
Getting here Location Address: Collingwood College South Road, Durham DH1 3LT Closest international Airport: Newcastle International Airport 40 minutes by car Durham Train Station 20 minute walk, < 5 minute drive Welcome Service The University offers a free pick-up service from the train station in Durham and from Newcastle International Airport that will take you straight to College. It s available 8
from Wednesday 30 th of September to Friday 2 nd of October. Check on the link below for more information and booking, instation_welcomeservice/. Other Avenues If you are not able to make use of the welcome service there are other easy ways of reaching college. From Newcastle International Airport you can take the Metro (underground public transport) to Newcastle Central Station and from there the train to Durham. This would only cost about 12 Pounds. From Durham train station you can walk to college, however if you have a lot of luggage taking a taxi from the station is recommended, which would cost about 5 Pounds. If you prefer not to have to take a train there are taxi services that supply transfers from Newcastle Airport. These cost about Pounds if you pre-book them and can get much more expensive (50 Pounds or more) if you get one on the day. There is a range of taxi companies offering their services, but below is one that is commonly used by Durham students: The University website also has a helpful page outlining how to reach Durham through various modes of transport, 9
When you arrive Durham Durham is one of the safest student cities in the UK and everyone is really friendly. The Cathedral and Castle are both part of a UNESCO world heritage site and are stunning. Most of the city is accessible by foot and most students walk to get from one place to another. The river Wear flows through the city and provides many Instagram opportunities on a nice day. The town centre is made up of alleys and cobbled streets (high heels are ambitious) filled with quaint coffee shops, homey bars and exciting clubs at the same time. Collingwood College The best ever. Collingwood is located 15 minutes from the city centre on foot and about 5-10 minutes from the library. Colleges are divided mainly into Hill and Bailey. Collingwood is part of the Hill college cluster as, you ve guessed it, we re located on the hill. The botanic gardens are just next to college and are a good place for a walk every now and then. JCR All undergraduates are invited to be part of the Junior Common Room (JCR) which organizes events, runs the services in College (bar and shops), manages college sports 10
teams and societies, and provides student leadership opportunities, all while looking after its members welfare. We re quite a big college with a lively student population. Our JCR has worked hard to develop the gym, bar, coffee shop and general goods shop as well as various recreational and music rooms for your use. We re fully catered and all your dietary needs can be met. For more information about the JCR visit our website: Welfare If you ever need anyone to talk to at any time, college has a student run welfare team at your disposal so please do not hesitate to approach them. We know it can be hard talking to a superior and as such peer support is always important. Rooms There are two types of lets at Collingwood, standard let and en suite. The majority of students will be allocated single standard rooms with a personal sink and shared toilets and showers. A small number of you could be given single or shared en suite rooms based on your preferences expressed in the room allocation form. En suite rooms are used by the University for conferences during vacation periods and as such you will have to pack up your belongings and leave them in your under-bed storage. The storage space is limited so do bear this in mind when deciding how much to bring. If you intend to stay in college during vacation do remember to check your regularly towards the end of term as college office will detail the price and options regarding meal packages. If you re in an en suite room, you ll be unable to stay in your room over the holidays. You are however, allowed to stay in your room and leave your stuff around if you are in a single standard room. 11
Freshers Week Fresher s week officially begins on 4 th of October. We have an amazing week planned and it promises to be unforgettable. During the week you ll find out more about living in college and being part of Durham University with your Matriculation ceremony (a formal welcome into the University) taking place in the Cathedral and themed events in college. You ll need a suit and tie or dress for the Matriculation ceremony. You will also realise that fancy dress (aka getting dressed up in costume) is a big part of student life at Durham so if you have any spectacular costumes, be sure to bring them with you as you ll use them sooner or later. The University organizes a fair to showcase the many sports teams and societies that you can become a part of during your stay at Durham and we strongly recommend attending it and seeing if anything takes your interest. Medical Screening After you arrive, some of you will be required to do a medical screening to make sure that you re free of tuberculosis. Some lucky winners may be required to attend an X-ray screening at the University Hospital of North Durham. If you re one of them please let us know and we ll give you full directions. Living Bank Account It is imperative that you do set up a UK bank account! It makes paying for tuition and accommodation much much easier with direct debit. There are several banks in Durham that will provide you with the usual stuff (current account, 12
ATM card, cheque book) but international banks do make it easier to transfer funds from abroad. We ll be doing tours of Durham and will show you to the banks and shops you ll need and you ll be able to arrange an appointment with your preferred bank to set up an account. Depending on demand, you might not get an appointment till some time later so do have some cash on hand to cover your expenses till then. Before your appointment, make sure that you have the following items: "!Passport "!Campus card "!Details of residence in Durham if you re not living in college, this can be a tenancy agreement "!Confirmation letter from College Office online form. The British Bankers Association has a useful link for international students setting up a bank account: If you re interested in contents insurance for personal belongings, the National Union of Students (NUS) recommends Endsleigh: Mobile Phones A free giffgaff simcard will be waiting for you when you arrive at college to start you off with a UK number, however feel free to explore the other service providers (some main ones are Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and EE) and decide on which one best suits your needs. Do note that you won t get reception in some places around Durham, including the downstairs area at Collingwood. 13
However all University buildings do provide free Wi-Fi for students. Working in the UK There are opportunities to work on a part-time basis within college; at the coffee shop, bar or general store. Alternatively student jobs are available around campus or in the city. Be sure to sign up for the Durham University Careers Service mailing list at the Fresher s Fair, to receive updates on job vacancies. As an international, you will have restrictions on working, normally this would be 20 hours a week. If you want to work you will require a National Insurance Number (NI no.). To get this you will need to contact NI Allocations Service at +44 (0) You should inform them that you re a Durham University student looking for an NI no. to work I the UK. You may need to book an appointment at a JobCentrePlus (Hallgarth Street) to discuss your application. Alternatively you can do your application by post. The UKCISA can provide you with some guidance: Travelling UK If you re between 16 and 25 and are planning to travel in the UK it is a good idea to purchase a railcard, which gives you 1/3 off the price of train tickets. You can do this either at a station or online. Durham is about 3 hours away from London by train and only about 1 hour from Edinburgh. Newcastle is the closest big city to Durham and it takes about 15 minutes to get there by rail. We will be making a day-trip there when you 14
get here to do some shopping as it offers a broader range of outlets than Durham. To find out times for trains and reserve tickets the website below is useful: Europe Especially if you re from outside of Europe, studying in the UK is a great opportunity to explore the rest of the continent. As a student you re likely to be travelling on a budget, so purchasing an Interrail or Eurail ticket (depending on your nationality) is a good way to travel relatively economically. The ticket enables you to catch unlimited trains in Europe for the duration of your trip. The site below has useful tips and information on connections between cities: There are also budget airlines that fly from the UK to continental Europe at advantageous prices, such as Ryanair and EasyJet. 15
