1 Deciphering the Degree Audit Report (DARS) The goal of this presentation is to familiarize SOC students with the degree audit system.

2 What is the degree audit report (DARS)? A tool that can assist you with short term and long term academic planning A tool that you can use to review degree requirements (major, minor, University, General Education, etc.) A comprehensive audit of credits/classes in progress and completed (including AP, CE, TR, etc.)

3 Codes You Need to Know SOC School of Communication COMM Communication LAS Liberal Arts and Sciences FA08 Fall 2008 SP09 Spring 2009 IP In Progress AP Advanced Placement CE Credit by Exam (International Baccalaureate Credit, CLEP, etc.) TR Transfer Credit P Pass on Pass/Fail grading option I Incomplete W Withdrawal (after the drop/add grace period)

4 Log in to the American University portal my.american.edu Select Academics Then Select View Degree Audit Report (DARS)

5 You can audit your current academic program OR audit a different academic program - What If DARS

6 At the beginning of your DARS, there will be information about your current program - Intended Graduation Date, Academic Catalog Year, and Intended Major. The University Credit Hours and GPA section will help you determine: -How many credits you have completed, in progress, and need in order to meet the minimum 120 credit hours for graduation requirements -Your Cumulative GPA -Credits from AP, CE, TR, etc. -Credits completed in residence at American University

7 Hours Outside of SOC SOC students are required to complete 80 credit hours outside of COMM*** ***Film and Media Arts students: your are required 78 credits outside of SOC Journalism and Public Communication students: 65 of the 80 credits outside of SOC must be Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). ACCT, EDU, FIN, HFIT, IBUS, ITEC, KSB, MGMT & MKTG are not LAS. College Writing and English Competency Requirement This student is currently enrolled in LIT-100 for the fall 2008 term. This student will need to complete LIT-101. University Mathematics Requirement This student is currently enrolled in MATH-211 for the fall 2008 term.

8 A brief and important review of the General Education Program regulations.

9 Your DARS will detail the five areas of the General Education Program. This student is currently enrolled in 1:1, 3:1, and 4:1 classes for the fall 2008 term. For these areas, the select from list indicates the second-level course choices in the same cluster that will complete the area.

10 SOC Related Course Requirements SOC students are required to complete an approved course in U.S. History and Economics Public Communication and Film and Media Art/Visual Media students can complete an Economics course OR Marketing 250 The Journalism Major Requirements section details credits in-progress and needed for the program. The Journalism Core Requirements section details all the required COMM core courses. This student is currently enrolled in COMM-100 for the fall 2008 term.

11 The Journalism degree program has two tracks/concentrations: Broadcast and Print. Currently, Journalism students must select one track/concentration: Broadcast OR Print. This student has not completed or enrolled in any courses for his/her selected track.

12 At the end of your DARS there will be: -a section for Electives -a list of courses taken by semester (including AP, CE, TR, etc.) -a guide to symbols used within DARS

13 What If I Want To Choose a Different Program - What If DARS

14 This student has decided to select a What If DARS for a major in Film and Media Arts/Visual Media and a minor in Marketing. SOC students are required to complete a minor or a second major outside of SOC.
