College Admissions One of the best standard predictors of academic success at Harvard is performance on Advanced Placement Examinations. William R. Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, Harvard University You will be given a clear understanding of what you need to succeed on college exams.
AP and College Admission Colleges rank Grades in college prep courses and Strength of curriculum as the top two factors in the admission decision.* 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.** We look favorably on students who have taken AP courses. The presence of AP courses is a sign that a student has chosen to challenge him/herself. Admission Officer
Claiming One Common Column Ground: State Policymaking for Improving College Readiness and Success (2006. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education) One This report Two observes that gaining admission to college is not the most daunting challenge facing high school graduates-although Three many students think that it is and most college preparation efforts focus on admissions. The more difficult challenge for students is becoming prepared academically for college coursework. Once students enter college, about half of them learn that they are not prepared for college-level courses The academic intensity of the student s high school curriculum still counts more than anything else in precollegiate history in providing momentum toward completing a bachelor s degree
Advancing High School Reform in the States (2005. National Association of Secondary School Principals) One Column One This association encourages states to develop policies Two that are targeted at increasing the rigor of the [high school] Three curriculum including establishing a core curriculum that is aligned with college admission standards, developing an accelerated high school curriculum, and concurrently providing incentives for students to take more rigorous courses or accelerated learning opportunities through the AP program, the International Baccalaureate program, or Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment keeps students: Engaged On track to graduate Better positioned to succeed in college For Example ENG101/102 = 6 credits College English MAT187 = 5 credits College Math CHM151/152 = 8 credits 2 College Science with Labs
Dual One Credit in Column Oregon, 2010 Follow-up: An Analysis of Students Taking Dual Credit in High School in (2010. Office of Institutional Research, Oregon University System) One Dual Two credit students have a higher college participation rate Three than high school graduates overall. Dual credit students who go on to college continue to the second year at a higher rate than freshmen who enter college without having earned dual credit. Among freshmen who continue to the second year of college, dual credit participants earn a higher first year GPA. Students who continue to the second year of college accumulate more college credit if they take dual credit in high school.
Rio Salado College was one of the founding members of NACEP Rio Salado College is the only college in Arizona that is NACEP accredited. NACEP accreditation improved our credibility with school administrators, provided us with standards that could be used for the entire state, and now serves as the benchmark for all concurrent enrollment programs in our state. Early College Department
The DE-AGEC Advantage The Maricopa County Community College District Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) consists of semester-credits that fulfill lower-division general education requirements for students planning to transfer to any Arizona public community college or university. Benefits for completing the AGEC during high school: AGEC transfers as a block to all AZ universities. Completion of AGEC guarantees acceptance to AZ universities. Students complete their General Education requirements before entering the university. Provides foundation for students to build on in working towards an Associates or Bachelors degree. Increased scholarship opportunities for students with AGEC or AA. Students may also be eligible for Concurrent classes. Upon approval from the high school, students enroll in online classes at Rio Salado and earn high school and college credit.
AP Credit Policy Information Information about AP credit and placement policies at many colleges and universities is available at: Search by college or university name or by letter of the alphabet 2. You will see two things for each school: A link to the college s own Web page that details its AP credit and placement policies. A statement by the college or university about its AP policy. 24
Personal Recommendation Do BOTH Rio Salado Dual Enrollment AND take the AP Course and Exam they buy your student different benefits. Dual: Assured Credit AP: Advanced Placement in the particular dept. and often double credit for courses in-state BOTH: Advanced standing as a college student and the ability to register for classes, parking, etc. before many other students.
