5 Introduction Mazda was introduced in 1972 on the European market and has become a respected carmaker renowned for its quality and vast model range. Mazda carries models in almost every popular segment. Current line-up for the Dutch market include the Mazda 2, 3, 5, 6, MX-5 and CX-7. The new CX-5 is the latest addition and has been introduced in February 2012 with the petrol version, while the diesel version will be available from July 1. Clearly by its name it can be considered the more compact version of the Mazda CX-7 and will therefore be part of the compact-suv segment. The entire line-up of the CX-5 will be fitted with Mazda s all new SKYACTIV technology. This is a combination of body/chassis design and advanced drive train technology, meant to reduce CO 2 emissions without compromising driving pleasure. The CX-5 is also the first Mazda with the new KODO design, recognizable by the new grille and overall combination of sportiness, elegance and functionality. The segment of the new CX-5 has been one of the fastest growing segments from 2010 to April 2012 (illustrated in Chapter 2). With class leading CO 2 figures, EURO6 compliance for the diesel engine and competitive pricing the new CX-5 has a good starting point for success. An in-depth analysis of all factors to be considered, including the closest competitors, will be given in this report. This report focuses on the diesel version, since a Residual Value Report for the petrol version has already been published. Important note: all data and figures in this report are provided by the Autotelex Restwaarde Instituut except when specifically mentioned. 6 1. Dutch market, the S-segment Overall Petrol/Diesel ratio Overall the ratio between petrol and diesel engines in the Dutch market has changed in the past years. The total share of diesel engines has increased, however not reaching more than approximately 20%, which is quite low when compared to neighbouring countries. In the compact-suv segment (S-segment) the market share of diesel engines in 2010 was only about 16% and is even lower in 2011 as can be seen in the pie below. A relative large share of private sales is partly responsible for this figure. Higher BPM and road tax on diesel engines further reduce interest in this fuel type. 7 Business/Private ratio Cars in the S-segment are more often bought for private purposes. Private share is around 55% in The remaining 45% can be considered mostly lease, rental and fleet owners and is the total of all registrations other than private. As can be seen in the chart below, interest in diesel engines is virtually exclusively limited to the business market. Only when petrol engines are limited available some brands show a high percentage in diesel share on the private market. The chart below shows the private versus business sales based on the cars first registration over the year 2012 till March, divided into fuel type. 8 Segment changes In 2011 the B-segment has become the largest segment in the Netherlands at 26% market share. Smaller and more fuel efficient cars dominate the market nowadays. In general recent shifts in segment shares are greatly induced by tax measures. As more models with favourable taxation become available in certain segments the market share is likely to rise. The S-segment (SUV) in the chart below is a combination of compact SUV s and larger SUV s to create a convenient overview. The same goes for the M-segment, which combines smaller and larger MPV s. Throughout the rest of this report the S-segment designates the compact- SUV segment. 9 Driver types Since almost 60% of new sales are to private owners it can be interesting to see what the age of the average private buyer is to determine which age group deserves most attention in marketing and after sales. In case of the S-segment the average age of the private buyer is 57 years old. Almost any manufacturer chooses to appeal to a younger audience, but this chart clearly shows where the focus should be. 10 Body styles Body style in the S-segment is limited to SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). Variation exists merely in the number of seats and flexibility of the interior. The Mazda CX-5 stands out with its Karakuri three way split folding rear seat, easily creating a fully flat cargo surface. The Dutch are especially sensitive to practicality, the reason why for example the sedan body style is very unpopular. Price level Prices in the S-segment start at just under euro s with the Dacia Duster or for the Nissan Juke. Considering these are not real competitors of the new CX-5, the starting price of just under euro s is very competitive. Especially since the CX-5 price includes the new BPM regulations as of July 1, Without net-price adjustments to compensate, this will lead to an increase of 5-15% in new prices of all competitors. The starting price of any model is part of a first impression and plays an important role in marketing activities. 12 2. Model range and overview of competitors The model range of the new Mazda CX-5 is completely in line with all other Mazda model lines. S, TS, TS+ and GT-M versions are all included. Standard equipment for the entry level S model contains most basic needs, like manual air conditioning and radio CD/MP3 player, but the TS model is equipped up to expectations in this segment, with cruise control, 17 alloy wheels, climate control and other desirable equipment. The Lease Pack versions offer attractive extra s over the TS+ equipment at the same price, reducing interest in the TS+ version, even though they are listed on separate price sheets. A special place in the line-up is reserved for the 2.2 D GT-M 4WD with an automatic transmission. It is the only 4 wheel drive diesel version and adds another 19 kw s, while still delivering very low CO 2 emissions. Worth mentioning is that all versions meet the stringent EURO6 emission standards, currently translated into a unique competitive position and a euro BPM tax bonus. 15 Competitor sales overview When we have a closer look at all offerings in the S-segment, we can see the influence of the 58% private sales in this segment: Far more petrol sales, due to lower taxation. Only brands that offer no or a limited amount of petrol versions show substantial diesel sales. New prices are more important for private users than for business users. Premium brands or otherwise expensive models show lower sales numbers or a larger business share (see Chapter 1). In a few months time a respectable 6,9% market share is achieved by the Mazda CX-5 petrol version. 20 Sales figures relevant competitors When we have a more in depth look at sales figures amongst relevant competitors in the S-segment (see below), we clearly see the lead taken by the combo Kia Sportage/Hyundai ix35. This combo is responsible for more than 1/4 of all sales in the S-segment. Considering a total of about 30 models, this is quite an achievement. It also shows the potential in this segment for fashionable models with good value for money. Proven by the 6,9% market share of the Mazda CX-5, based on just the petrol version, this gives a very good outlook for the new CX-5. 22 4. SWOT analysis Warranty Warranty terms for the Mazda CX-5 are no different than for the other Mazda models and in line with other Japanese manufacturers. Kia and Hyundai show different warranty terms and intensively advertise these. Warranty can be a strong sales incentive and Mazda shows neither strength, nor weakness in this department. 24 Image Mazda s image on the Dutch market has been very consistent in time. There has always been the good quality, clear line-up, good and recognizable design. Brand perception in the Netherlands may suffer a bit from a middle of the road image. An increasingly important part of a car manufacturer s image are its efforts in CO 2 reduction and/or compensation. Mazda s all new SKYACTIV program is a great opportunity to further improve Mazda s image. The addition of the new diesel engines is an extra stimulus to emphasize this. Lease, fleet, rental S-segment sales in the business market, of which lease, fleet and rental is the largest share, is currently at 42%. Compared to for example the D-segment with more than 80% of all new sales to the business market, this is rather low. With the introduction of the Lease Pack versions in the CX-5, Mazda clearly aims at business market share. The Lease Pack versions with their accompanying equipment like navigation, Bluetooth phone connection, cruise control and parking sensors are perfectly in line with nowadays necessities for the business user. As can be seen in Chapter 1, almost 1/4 of sales to the business market are diesel sales, while this is just 7% in the private market. The Mazda CX-5 has a unique offering in its segment with the 2.2 D TS+ Lease Pack 2WD with automatic transmission. A strength worth noting, for no competitor comes close to this combination of 2 wheel drive, automatic transmission and low CO 2 emissions. One more thing we will continue to emphasize is the electronic maintenance record, also known as DSR (Digital Service Record). It is quite unique, but not well known. We can definitely see some advantages for this in the business market: Nothing will get lost, every Mazda dealer has access and leasing companies can check in on scheduled maintenance more easily. Only Mercedes-Benz and Citroën offer this feature, so we see great opportunity in further exploiting this USP. 25 Model range, standard equipment and options Model range of the new CX-5 is in line with most other Mazda models and very comprehensive. The Lease Pack versions are communicated on a separate leaflet and offer attractive additional equipment in relation to the TS+ version without extra cost. Standard equipment of the entry-level S version is modest and this version is limited to the manual transmission 2WD. The GT-M version is top of the line, leaving only metallic paint as an option. Optional equipment for the CX-5 is somewhat limited, although the different lines will satisfy most customers. Some competitors show different leather combinations or a wider choice of alloy wheels, but except for maybe a sunroof nothing is missing. Modern safety options like LDW (Lane Departure Warning), RVM (Rear Vehicle Monitoring, also known as blind spot detection) and even City Safety (automatic braking at lower speeds) all are available. So even though standard equipment is impressive, especially in the safety department, the possibilities to personalize one s car are somewhat limited and may deserve attention in a time where this is becoming increasingly important. The government is taking further steps to stimulate the sale of cleaner, energy-efficient cars and has done so by making the BPM tax fully dependent on CO 2 figures by The new CX-5 shows class leading low CO 2 emissions, resulting in the only B-label in this overview. Even the 129 kw GT-M version with 4 wheel drive and automatic transmission is eligible for a C-label, which is quite an achievement, and unrivalled by any competitor. 27 Driving characteristics/test results Autotelex had the opportunity to drive the all new Mazda CX-5 during a brief period. We drove the 2.2 diesel engine with 2WD and the 6 speed manual transmission. First thing we notice is how smoothly the diesel engine revs up to higher RPM s, while still delivering ample power, not commonly associated with diesel engines. At the same time even from 1200 RPM in 6 th gear smooth acceleration is effortless. Gas pedal response is excellent and the engine does its work quietly. The start/stop system is hardly noticeable and gearbox changes are pleasant, helped by the short shift throws of the manual transmission. A fine balance is found between comfort and crisp handling, with a nice direct steering response. The directional stability seems to suffer somewhat from this set-up. We were unable to establish fuel consumption, but have no reason to fear disappointment. The interior is very roomy and visibility is excellent. The dashboard is predominantly black and lacks a bit of frivolity nowadays found in many competitors. Rear seating is comfortable and roomy and cargo space larger than most competitors. The SKYACTIV program is intertwined in many aspects of the car, and delivers a very convincing total package. Especially this diesel version was a pleasure to drive, with its adequate gas pedal response and broad power range. Government measures Tax regulations, pay-as-you-drive, CO 2 level discounts, fuel levies, tax adjustments, promotion of alternative fuels such as BIO-diesel, ethanol and/or natural gas, promotion of hybrid or electrical vehicles, road tax adjustments etcetera all are examples of factors that can induce market shifts. 34 Conclusion and residual value table Our previously published report of the CX-5 petrol line-up, has much overlap with this report of the CX-5 diesel line-up. We feel obliged to mention this similar outcome, as we cannot expect the reader of this report to be in possession of our CX-5 petrol version. So first our general CX-5 conclusion as can also be found in the other version: The Mazda CX-5 clearly shows the direction Mazda is headed. It is a very important car and the first Mazda model to introduce the full extent of the SKYACTIV program. The car is full of technological innovations, all without compromising important and well known Mazda values: Driving pleasure, oneness of car and driver and value for money. Most unique in the SKYACTIV program are the all new engines, because they represent a completely different approach from all competitors. Since the end result is unrivalled low CO 2 emissions and great driveability we see a bright future for this technology. It is definitely an edge over the competition. In the S-segment sales are predominantly to private persons, with a market share of 58%. Within this group only 7% chooses a diesel variant. Within the business market this is 25%. In both markets the CX-5 diesel shows a strong competitive position. Unrivalled low CO 2 emissions, even with four wheel drive and/or automatic transmission, and EURO6 compliance cannot be over emphasized. The virtually unique combination of diesel, 2 wheel drive and an automatic transmission is another strong sales argument. In our head-on comparison to its relevant rivals in Chapter 3, the Mazda CX-5, while not being the cheapest, shows a unique combination of wanted features, including a high horsepower rating, all in one car. Also worth mentioning: -the very positive reactions to both design and test drive results. -the flexibility of the all new diesel engine, with ample power at lower RPM s and ease of still accelerating at higher RPM s. -the positive contribution of the SKYACTIV program, including weight reduction without compromising safety. -sales figures of the petrol version in 2012 so far leading to a market share of almost 7%. -unique Karakuri system for flexible space arrangement. -increased competitive pricing as of July 1, 2012, explained in detail in Chapter 3. All factors that contribute to success and potential to be amongst the segment leaders. From a residual value perspective, Mazda has a solid reputation of quality and if a stable pricing policy is put in place with no sudden discounts or lower priced promotional models, we have a bright outlook for our residual value prediction as supported by the residual value table on the next page.
