2 Demand Generation for Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Voluntary medical male circumcision is an established and effective method of preventing new HIV infections. The NSP calls for the implementation of VMMC as part of a comprehensive package of sexual and reproductive health services to reduce the number of new HIV infections in South Africa. 10 Key Findings KZN has been the most successful province for CareWorks field mobilisation, yielding the highest number of leads, highest number of confirmed circumcisions and highest conversion ratio. The uptake of VMMC services is inversely correlated to age, with the highest conversion ratio among young males (49%) and the lowest conversion ratio among older males (23%). Uptake of VMMC services was higher among leads mobilised by males compared to female mobilisers. 10

11 Lessons Learned Creative approaches are required to accelerate uptake of VMMC services, particularly among males over 25 years. Activation of leads is time-sensitive. Matching demand generation to availability of clinical services requires real-time scheduling capabilities. Seasonality of VMMC requires matching demand creation to availability of clinical services, with appropriate scale-up in winter and down-scale in summer. As areas near clinical services become saturated, mobilisation efforts must move away from service delivery outlets. Providing interested men with transportation to clinical services becomes necessary. 11
